1 Editor’s Note Welcome to the first edition of Liverpool College’s Middle School Magazine College Column. Over the past few months, I have been working with both Year 8 Butler’s and Year 8 Brook’s during Thursday activity sessions to bring you this inaugural issue. Firstly, I would like to applaud the efforts of all pupils that were involved in the making of this very first version of College Column. I am extremely grateful for the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the pupils of both Butler’s and Brook’s during this process. Moreover, I would like to thank Mr Cartwright for arranging this activity and allowing pupils to become creative outside of the classroom. It has been a privilege to see pupils develop original ideas into complete articles. Additionally, I am very excited to begin working on future editions of College Column with the other Year 8 forms throughout the remainder of the academic year. If you’re in a Year 8 form, get thinking of future articles that you would like to include in your personal issue of College Column. Finally, to you the reader, thank you for taking the time to read the very first College Column. This version of College Column puts particular emphasis on Liverpool College’s recent (and quite frankly fantastic GCSE results) in addition to providing advice for our new Year 7 pupils, a range of original pieces of creative writing and information about the impending school play Bye, Bye Birdie. There are a range of puzzles and activities to complete in the magazine.

We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. We spent a little time discussing Grass in 2003.

  • THE WOMBATS Er Klar Med Nyt Album Og Dansk Koncert
2015-01-21 10:02 CET THE WOMBATS er klar med nyt album og dansk koncert. The Wombats follow their Top5 album ‘ThisModernGlitch’ with the release of their third full-length ‘Glitterbug’ on April6th via 14thFloorRecords / Warner Bros. Records. Produced by MarkCrew (Bastille) and TheWombats – frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer DanHaggis – the album’s themes were inspired by core songwriter Murph’s experiences in LosAngeles. Drawn to the city’s mix of “opulence and anxiety”, hissongwriting for the album focused upon the idea of writing about a tumultuous relationship with a fictional woman from Los Angeles. “That became the main inspiration for most of the songs, this false world that I’d created for myself,” he explains. “As time progressed, I’d go to L.A. more and more, and the idea kept on building. The album’s about the envy and the struggle and the pretence and the worry and the fear that L.A. – and every major city in the world – encompasses.” Approximately halfway through the writing process, events conspired to curve full-circle from fiction into fact when Murph started dating a seemingly unattainable woman from the city. And so imaginary stories evolved into real life concerns: the fading embers of his relationship back in London and the challenges of maintaining a long distance relationship. Instrumentally, most of the songs took one of two directions: back in Liverpool, bassist Tord and drummer Dan’s rush of creativity would result in them delivering backing tracks as a foundation for Murph to then build upon in L.A.
