Licenced under CC BY-SA 2.0 / image cropped. 3 Commons Library Briefing, 9 June 2017 Summary This paper gives an outline of the more recent history of the Parthenon sculptures, their acquisition by the British Museum and the long-running debate about suggestions they be removed from the British Museum and returned to Athens. The Parthenon sculptures consist of marble, architecture and architectural sculpture from the Parthenon in Athens, acquired by Lord Elgin between 1799 and 1810. Often referred to as both the Elgin Marbles and the Parthenon marbles, “Parthenon sculptures” is the British Museum’s preferred term.1 Lord Elgin’s authority to obtain the sculptures was the subject of a Select Committee inquiry in 1816. It found they were legitimately acquired, and Parliament then voted the funds needed for the British Museum to acquire them later that year. -

Copyright and re-use policy See http://shura.shu.ac.uk/information.html Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive http://shura.shu.ac.uk British Imperial Policy and the Indian Air Route, 1918-1932 Teresa Crompton A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Sheffield Hallam University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2014 Abstract The thesis examines the development of the civil air route between Britain and India from 1918 to 1932. Although an Indian route had been pioneered before the First World War, after it ended, fourteen years would pass before the route was established on a permanent basis. The research provides an explanation for the late start and subsequent slow development of the India route. The overall finding is that progress was held back by a combination of interconnected factors operating in both Britain and the Persian Gulf region. These included economic, political, administrative, diplomatic, technological, and cultural factors. The arguments are developed through a methodology that focuses upon two key theoretical concepts which relate, firstly, to interwar civil aviation as part of a dimension of empire, and secondly, to the history of aviation as a new technology. -

Please refer to the information below for resolving these issues. iOS To prevent any further issues regarding logging into the app on iOS, you must avoid opening the app unless you've authenticated through Brown's log in portal. Opening the app outside of logging in through Brown, will most likely result in the inability to log in and use the app. If you are having issues logging into it: Solution 1 1. Open your device's web browser, visit rosettastone.brown.edu, and log in 2. Click the “Launch Rosetta Stone Language Lessons” link to launch the app 3. You will experience the same problem as in the past - you will just see a "splash" screen instead of being logged in. On this screen, click Enterprise And Education Learners. 4. On the login screen that appears, type three random values (just a single letter will work) into the Username, Password, and Namespace fields. 5. You will see an error message. Click Try again and proceed with the next step. 6. Return to your web browser and again, visit rosettastone.brown.edu. 7. Click the “Launch Rosetta Stone Language Lessons” link to launch the app again. 8. Wait for the login to proceed - it should work. If you still see the error message, click the Try Again option. -

I’m David Ferriero, I’m the Archivist of the United States and it is a great pleasure to welcome you to my house this afternoon. According to Alexa.com, the internet traffic ranking company, there are only six websites that internet users worldwide visit more often than Wikipedia: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo!, Blogger.com, and Baidu.com (the leading Chinese language search engine). In the States, it ranks sixth behind Amazon.com. Over the past few years, the National Archives has worked with many of these groups to make our holdings increasingly findable and accessible, our goal being to meet the people where they are. This past fall, we took the first step toward building a relationship with the “online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.” When we first began exploring the idea of a National Archives-Wikipedia relationship, Liam Wyatt was one of, was the one who pointed us in the right direction and put us in touch with the local DC-area Wikipedian community. Early in our correspondence, we were encouraged and inspired when Liam wrote that he could quote “quite confidently say that the potential for collaboration between NARA and the Wikimedia projects are both myriad and hugely valuable - in both directions.” I couldn’t agree more. Though many of us have been enthusiastic users of the Free Encyclopedia for years, this was our first foray into turning that enthusiasm into an ongoing relationship. As Kristen Albrittain and Jill James of the National Archives Social Media staff met with the DC Wikipedians, they explained the Archives’ commitment to the Open Government principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration and the ways in which projects like the Wikipedian in Residence could exemplify those values. -

Public Weather Service Value for Money Review March 2015 Mike Gray Public Weather Service Customer Group Secretariat Page 1 of 25 Public Weather Service Value for Money Review Executive Summary Through analysing existing studies and literature on the economic value of weather forecasts, and using up to date figures, this review concludes with high confidence that the benefits of the Public Weather Service (PWS) to the UK are very likely to exceed £1bn per annum, and are likely to be close to £1.5bn per annum. This is consistent with the findings of the previous value for money study prepared for the PWS Customer Group (PWSCG) by PA from 2007 which assessed the economic benefits of the PWS at £614m per annum and, given its limited scope, considered the benefits to be many times that figure. Sectors considered in the review were the perceived value to the public (which had an estimated benefit of £480m per annum), value to aviation (£400m per annum), added value to other sectors of the economy (£400m per annum), storm damage avoidance (£80m per annum), value to land transport (£100m per annum) and flood damage avoidance (£64m per annum). Other benefits included the hosting of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) in the UK (£60m per annum) and business of over €200m for the UK space industry by being able to bid for EUMETSAT (the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) contracts by virtue of UK membership paid for by the PWS. It is estimated that the PWS contributes to reducing deaths from high impact weather by many tens per year, and many more during individual severe events such as North Sea coastal flooding. -

The binding of my original copy is broken, with the pages - stained with sweat, tanning oil, seawater, sand and muck - secured between the covers by means of a large rubber band. Almost there! All in all, a highly recommended book. The book is full of chance happenings, and meetings with people who are affable and whimsical at the same time, acting out in a typical way which has come to be characterized by the melange of cultures that India is. Throughout most of India, the onset of the monsoon rains, the "burst," was eagerly anticipated, the arrival of life- giving rains and cooler weather celebrated for centuries in art, poetry, and song. Though much of the book is littered with climactic Greek and latin phrases about cumulonimbus, wind shear, etc , one does not really need to understand the minutiae to enjoy the book.
