She clerked for the Honorable Constance Baker Motley of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and then worked as a law firm associate specializing in securities law and financial markets. She then joined Greenwich NatWest as associate general counsel and head of global compliance. Eventually she returned to the academic world, completing a Ph.D. in U.S. history from New York University. She has been a law professor at IIT Chicago-Kent from Tulane Law School since in 2006. Batlan is the author of the new book, Women and Justice for the Poor: A History of Legal Aid, 1863– 1945 (Cambridge University Press 2015). Lisa S. Hogan, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer of Communication Arts and Sciences and Women's Studies, Penn State University, Graduate School Hogan received her Ph.D. in Communications and Women’s Studies from Indiana University. She has been a lecturer on the faculty of Penn State’s Communication Arts graduate program for sixteen years. Hogan is the author of multiple works on Stanton, including: The Politics of Feminist Autobiography: Elizabeth Cady Stanton's Eighty Years or More as Ideological Manifesto, 38 Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal 1 (2009); A Time for Silence: William Lloyd Garrison and the 'Woman Question' at the World Anti-Slavery Convention, 25 Gender Issues 63 (June 2008); Wisdom, Goodness, and Power: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the History of Woman Suffrage, 23 Gender Issues 3 (Spring 2006); Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Our Girls” (1880), 1Voices of Democracy 104 (2006). Kathi Kern, Ph.D., Associate Professor History; Director, Center for the Enhancement of Learning & Teaching; Chellgren Professor; University of Kentucky Professor Kern earned a Ph.D. in American history at the University of Pennsylvania where she was a Mellon Fellow in the Humanities and a winner of the Dean's Award for distinguished teaching. Since 1989 she has been a member of the History Department at the University of Kentucky as well as an affiliated member of the Gender and Women's Studies Program. At UK, she has won the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching (1995) and the Alumni Great Teacher Award (2003), and the College of Education’s “Teachers Who Make a Difference” Award (2001, 2004). Professor Kern's research concerns gender, religion and the women's rights movement in nineteenth-century America. She is the author of Mrs. Stanton’s Bible (2001). 4 Lisa Tetrault, Ph.D., Associate Professor, History, Carnegie Mellon University Professor Tetrault specializes in the history of U.S. women and gender. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of History. Her first book, The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women's Suffrage Movement, 1848-1898 (University of North Carolina Press, 2014) won the Organization of American Historians' inaugural Mary Jurich Nickliss women's history book prize. Professor Tetrault has received long-term fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University, the Newberry Library, and the Smithsonian Institution. Tracy Thomas, J.D., Associate Dean for Institutional Excellence and Seiberling Chair of Constitutional Law, the University of Akron School of Law; Director of the Center for Constitutional Law. Professor Thomas received her B.A. degree, cum laude, from Miami University, M.P.A. degree from California State University and J.D. degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and production editor of the Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Journal. Prior to joining the Akron Law faculty in 1998, she clerked for Judge Ferdinand F. Fernandez on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and was an attorney for Covington & Burling and Neighborhood Legal Services in Washington D.C. Professor Thomas is the co-editor of Feminist Legal History: Essays on Women and Law (NYU Press 2011). Anthony Dear friend, I do not know that the world is quite willing or ready to discuss the question of marriage. I feel in my innermost that the thoughts I sent your convention are true. It is in vain to look for the elevation of woman, so long as she is degraded in marriage. I say it is a sin, an outrage on our holiest feelings to pretend that anything but deep, fervent love & sympathy constitutes marriage. The right idea of marriage is at the foundation of all reforms. How strange it is, man will apply all the improvements in the arts & sciences to everything about him animate & inanimate, but himself. A child conceived in the midst of hate, sin, & discord, nurtured in abuse & injustice cannot do much to l the world or himself. If we properly understand the science of life—it would be far easier to give to the world, harmonious beautiful, noble, virtuous children, than it is to bring grown up discord into harmony with the great divine soul of all. I ask for no laws on marriage . remove law and false public sentiment & woman will no more live as wife with a cruel, beastly, drunkard, than a servant, in this free country will stay with a pettish, unjust mistress. If law makers insist upon exercising their prerogative in some way on this question, let them forbid any woman to marry until she is twenty one. Let them fine a woman fifty dollars for every child she conceives by a Drunkard. Women have no right to saddle the state with idiots to be supported by the public. Only look at the statistics of the idiot asylums, nearly all the offspring of Drunkards. Woman must be made to feel that the transmitting of immortal life is a most solemn responsible act & never should be allowed, except when the parents are in the highest condition of mind & body. 6 Man in his lust has regulated this whole question of sexual intercourse long enough; let the mother of mankind whose prerogative it is to set bounds to his indulgence, rouse up & give this whole question a thorough, fearless examination. [I]f by martyrdom I can advance my race one step I am ready for it. I feel this whole question of woman’s rights turns on the pivot of the marriage relation, & sooner or later it will be the question for discussion.     Elizabeth Cady Stanton Early Life Born Elizabeth Cady 1815-1902 7th child born to Judge Daniel Cady and Margaret Livingston in Johnstown, NY Elizabeth’s mother was 16 when she married Daniel Cady. She was 12 years younger and several inches taller than he was. She was also a formidable, strong woman. Daniel Cady had “married up.” He came to his position because of his wife’s family’s wealth. He became a lawyer and then a judge. He was a strict Presbyterian who worried about his salvation. The couple had a total of 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. Six died before adulthood, and no more than 6 were alive at one time. In 1814 two of their sons died. Of Cady’s five sons, four died in childhood. One survived to adulthood, graduated from college, then died after a short illness at age 20. Daniel Cady was devastated. From In Her Own Right: The Life of Elizabeth Cady Stanton by Elisabeth Griffith: “Only Eleazar reached manhood. As Elizabeth recalled, her brother was ‘a fine manly fellow, the very apple of my father’s eye.’ He graduated from Union College in 1826. A few weeks later, after a short illness, he died. He was twenty years old. The whole family was stunned. Judge Cady, who had been away from home, returned to find Eleazar dead. Heartbroken at the loss of his last son, the grief-stricken father kept an uninterrupted vigil by the casket. After the funeral he made daily, tearful visits to the grave. ‘It was easily seen,’ Elizabeth wrote later, ‘that while my father was kind to us all, the one son filled a larger place in his affections and future plans than the five daughters together.’ Not yet eleven years old when her only brother died, Elizabeth remembered the event vividly.

    Name _________________________________________ Date __________________ The Women’s Suffrage Movement Part 1 The Women’s Suffrage Movement began with the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. The idea for the Convention came from two women: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. Both were concerned about women’s issues of the time, specifically the fact that women did not have the right to vote. Stanton felt that this was unfair. She insisted that women needed the power to make laws, in order to secure other rights that were important to women. The Convention was designed around a document that Stanton wrote, called the “Declaration of Sentiments”. Using the Declaration of Independence as her guide, she listed eighteen usurpations, or misuses of power, on the part of men, against women. Stanton also wrote eleven resolutions, or opinions, put forth to be voted on by the attendees of the Convention. About three hundred people came to the Convention, including forty men. All of the resolutions were eventually passed, including the 9th one, which called for women’s suffrage, or the right for women to vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott signed the Seneca Falls Declaration and started the Suffrage Movement that would last until 1920, when women were finally granted the right to vote by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. 1.     History of Convention Days Although the annual July celebration of Convention Days started with the 1979 opening of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, that was the not the first commemoration of the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention. Starting with the 1979 celebration, the annual Convention Days have been held on the weekend closest to July 19-20, which were the actual July days of the 1848 convention. The 1923 Celebration The 1923 event, which lasted three days, may have been the largest. Women had won the right to vote three years earlier and suffrage leaders from all over the nation journeyed to Seneca Falls to honor the place where it all started. To welcome the group, the village was decorated with banners of purple, white and gold, the colors of the National Women’s Party. The village hosted a reception for 500 visitors on the lawn of Trinity Episcopal Church. Local historian Matthew McKeon, who had just finished the eighth grade that year, said he remembers the event. The pageant—a production with 500 performers staged next to the church-- “drew a tremendous crowd,” that filled the lawns along lower Fall Street, he recalled. Seneca Falls resident Elizabeth Delavan and her sister, Gertrude Garnsey, were in the pageant’s cast. Mrs. Delavan said her role as a Greek woman carrying water was supposed to show how difficult women’s lives had been. “We thought it was wonderful,” she said of the production. “I don’t know if it was or not.” One of the reasons she remembers the event is because of the pageant’s director, a 20-year-old woman named Clare Booth.

I show how American regionalist writings from the 1820s to 1910s adapt scientific techniques of observation to the aesthetics of the regionalist sketch. Their "sketchy" view of Nature highlights the deficiencies of knowing and nonetheless opens out to a view of biological processes and succession in which life cedes to life through its casualties. Regionalist literature is, then, less a literature of particular cultural or geographical regions as it is a literature whose principles of diminishment might insist on the roughness and limits of a regional setting. The archive of works I draw upon extends from environmental literature—the nature writings of John James Audubon, Henry David Thoreau, and Celia Thaxter—to less conventionally regionalist texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as works by Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Gertrude Stein.

This essay argues that “The Solitude of Self” marked an important moment in the history of the women’s movement, as Stanton initiated a profoundly radical phase in the feminist quest for equality. This visionary speech signaled the birth of modern feminism with its emphasis on women’s intellectual and spiritual independence. Keywords: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, suffrage, women's rights, feminism In 1892, at the age of seventy‐six, Elizabeth Cady Stanton delivered a speech that many consider her rhetorical “masterpiece.”1 The speech, entitled “The Solitude of Self,” was delivered to both the House Judiciary Committee and later that evening to the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) convention in Washington, D.C. Before the NAWSA, the speech served as Stanton’s presidential retirement speech.2 As an activist for woman suffrage for nearly six decades, Stanton had been the movement’s leading voice and its “greatest speaker.”3 Yet this speech was unlike any that she had delivered before, and there was something about it that struck a chord. Stanton herself seemed pleased with its reception. Writing in her autobiography, Eighty Years and More, Stanton recalled that it was “well received” and that “many hundreds of copies” of the speech were reprinted and “extensively circulated.”4 “The Solitude of Self” is now a “canonical” speech of the woman suffrage movement,5 and it has been evaluated by many scholars.
