    The Hunger Games: An Indictment of Reality Television An ELA Performance Task The Hunger Games and Reality Television Introductory Classroom Activity (30 minutes) Have students sit in small groups of about 4-5 people. Each group should have someone to record their discussion and someone who will report out orally for the group. Present on a projector the video clip drawing comparisons between The Hunger Games and shows currently on Reality TV: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdmOwt77D2g) After watching the video clip, ask each group recorder to create two columns on a piece of paper. In one column, the group will list recent or current reality television shows that have similarities to the way reality television is portrayed in The Hunger Games. In the second column, list or explain some of those similarities. To clarify this assignment, ask the following two questions: 1. What are the rules that have been set up for The Hunger Games, particularly those that are intended to appeal to the television audience? 2. Are there any shows currently or recently on television that use similar rules or elements to draw a larger audience?     OAESV Survivor Series Empowerment, Hope & Healing UNDERSTANDING THE TRAUMA OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE Sexual Violence is a Form of Trauma As a survivor of sexual violence, you have endured a trauma, a significant event or series of events that fall outside the range of normal, everyday human experience. All forms of sexual violence are traumatic, including rape, attempted rape, sexual abuse, molestation, voyeurism, and many others. Other familiar types of traumatic events include combat conditions, natural disasters, vehicle accidents, and medical emergencies, or witnessing one or more of these events happening to someone else. What makes a particular experience traumatic is that the survivor’s ability to control what is happening to him or her is stripped away, often violently. The survivor feels that his or her health, safety and even life are directly threatened and he/she is rendered powerless to address that threat in the moment. Such an event overwhelms the brain’s capacity to effectively respond and cope the way you would be able to in other types of situations. The extent to which a particular event is experienced as being traumatic by the survivor depends on many factors, which are unique to each person and each situation. Although you may feel out of sorts, or even that you’re “going crazy,” your reactions are normal responses to an abnormal event. Sexual Violence is Unique While the “brain impact” of sexual violence is similar to that of other types of trauma, sexual violence is unique. Unlike other types of trauma, sexual violence is a deliberate violation of your most personal space by one or more individuals that you likely knew and may have even trusted or loved.

Task Your task is to make a maze! You will need some dotty-square paper. Choose a shape 10 dots by 10 dots. You can make this larger if you wish. Draw an outside fence through the dots. This will become the boundary of your maze. You will need to put two gaps into your outside fence. One gap is for the gate to enter your maze. The other gap is the gate to exit the maze. Draw a path in light pencil from the entrance gate to the exit gate going through the centre of as many dotty-squares as you wish.

    2014 was a unique year for pro-wrestling, one that will undoubtedly be viewed as historically significant in years to follow. Whether it is to be reflected upon positively or negatively is not only highly subjective, but also context-specific with major occurrences transpiring across the pro-wrestling world over the last 12 months, each with its own strong, and at times far reaching, consequences. The WWE launched its much awaited Network, New Japan continued to expand, CMLL booked lucha's biggest match in well over a decade, culminating in the country's first million dollar gate, TNA teetered more precariously on the brink of death than perhaps ever before, Daniel Bryan won the WWE's top prize, Dragon Gate and DDT saw continued success before their loyal niche audiences, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk departed the WWE with one ending up in the most unexpected of places, a developing and divergent style produced some of the best indie matches of the year, the European scene flourished, the Shield disbanded, Batista returned, Daniel Bryan relinquished his championship, and the Undertaker's streak came to an unexpected and dramatic end. These are but some of the happenings, which made 2014 the year that it was, and it is in this year-book that we look to not only recap all of these events and more, but also contemplate their relevance to the greater pro-wrestling landscape, both for 2015 and beyond. It should be stated that this year-book was inspired by the DKP Annuals that were released in 2011 and 2012, in fact, it was the absence of a 2013 annual that inspired us to produce a year-book for 2014.

Revenues totaled $118.4 million as compared to $115.1 million in the prior year quarter. Operating loss was $12.2 million as compared to income of $2.6 million in the prior year quarter. Net loss was $7.9 million, or $0.10 per share, as compared to income of $0.6 million, or $0.01 per share, in the prior year quarter. OIBDA in the fourth quarter 2013 decreased to a $5.6 million loss from income of $8.5 million in the prior year quarter. The decline in OIBDA and Operating income was primarily attributable to increased investment in staffing, talent and marketing to support our strategic content initiatives, including the launch of WWE Network. Lower sales of new DVD releases and a corresponding shift in product mix to lower priced catalog titles, as well as compressed television production margins that derived from changes in the mix of programming also contributed to the year-over-year decline. “During the past year, we laid the foundation for future growth and enhanced our brand strength,” stated Vince McMahon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “We have now announced the renewal of our television distribution agreement in the U.K., are continuing the negotiations regarding our domestic content, and are poised to launch our global WWE Network in the next few days.

Revenues for the quarter increased 19% to $140.5 million from $118.4 million in the fourth quarter last year. For the quarter, the Company reported a Net loss of $1.6 million, or $0.02 loss per share, as compared to a Net loss of $7.9 million, or $0.10 loss per share, in the prior year quarter. The revenue increase was driven by the Network and Television segments with earnings growth driven primarily by the rise in television rights fees. Excluding items affecting comparability, Adjusted OIBDA increased to $5.1 million from a loss of $5.6 million and Adjusted Net loss was $0.6 million, or $0.01 loss per share, as compared to a Net loss of $7.9 million, or $0.10 loss per share, in the prior year quarter. “During the quarter, we remained focused on growing WWE Network, which surpassed 1 million subscribers in January 2015, just 11 months after launch. This paper outlines the various ways Survivor has been able to outwit, outlast, and outplay for twenty-seven seasons. This award-winning American reality competition show tests the physical, mental, emotional, and social limits of anyone who is willing to be “stranded” on a deserted island in order to have the chance to win $1,000,000. As contestants try to adapt to their new island lifestyle, producers try to adapt new ways to keep the audience engaged from season to season. This paper gives readers a detailed history of how the show came to be as well as prediction as to where the show will and will not go in the future.
