DEDICATION: Passing the Baton This book has a three-fold dedication: first, to the wonderful congregation at Westside Christian Fellowship in Lancaster, California. They have not only been an incredible blessing but have inspired me to write this book. Early in my ministry, I wasn’t sure how my passion would be perceived—would it discourage or encourage, motivate or upset, convict or condemn? They have not only shared my passion for the Word but have motivated me to continue. Thank you. Second, I also want to dedicate this to our children—Aubrey, Shane, Gracie, and Kylee. My wife and I pray that they will take God’s Word into all areas of their lives and allow the truth to reach the next generation—to be Desperate for More of God. Third, my wife, Morgan, has been a tremendous mother and wife. This book is dedicated to her as well. She came up with the title one morning while we were throwing ideas around. Her love and strength continue to amaze me. She is a true Proverbs 31 woman. Thank you for encouraging me in this endeavor—you truly are a blessing. ENDNOTES ENDORSEMENTS “Bold, Outspoken, and Prophetic, this book is sure to awaken, convict, and challenge...” Alex Montoya; Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministries, The Master's Seminary in Sun Valley, California “With books such as Crazy Love by Francis Chan and Radical by David Platt, here comes a book of equal importance for the evangelical Church of our day. Read it and be challenged.” Greg Gordon; Founder, SermonIndex.net “Desperate for More of God. The title says it all. Pastor Shane Idleman’s heart for personal revival is evident throughout...engaging, challenging, and convicting, this book is sure to revive the hearts of those who are truly seeking God.” Pastor Jim Garlow; Skyline Church, San Diego, California ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Again, my deepest gratitude to my wife, Morgan, my daughters, Aubrey, Gracie, and Kylee, and my son, Shane, who have all been a tremendous blessing. I thank God for a wonderful family. They are the true treasures in life. I thank my mother, Diane Idleman, who has continued to offer guidance and encouragement. Not only is she a great mother but an exceptional editor and “book doctor.” She provided the editorial overview of this book as well as the others. The books would not be what they are today had it not been for her insight. I thank her for the many days, nights, weeks, and months invested —may it return a hundred-fold. I also want to acknowledge my father, Jim Idleman, who died of a heart attack at age 54. He inspired me more than he could have known. I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences we shared, the lessons I learned, and the man that I became as a result of the time we spent together. INTRODUCTION: Begin Here One of the difficult challenges associated with pastoring is witnessing the tragic results of people dying spiritually with living water just steps away: “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst” (John 4:14). Although most can quote, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled,” many have never truly experienced it—very few are truly hungry and thirsty for God. This hunger and thirst is an all-consuming passion that drives every aspect of life. One summer, I took a bike ride out into the desert. I eventually turned around and began the long journey back to my truck. I then realized that I was out of water. Each mile brought a new level of thirst and desperation. My thoughts were consumed with water; nothing else mattered. The calm scenery enjoyed minutes earlier had lost its attraction. Hope surged when I spotted my truck in the near distance. Within minutes, I dropped my bike, sprang the truck door open, and devoured the remaining water. Dehydration and exhaustion quickly gave way to a refreshing sense of satisfaction. The desperate thirst that I was feeling was now fully satisfied. This parallels the thirst that God describes in His Word—those who thirst (seek) for Him with all their heart will be satisfied. This is not about partial obedience; it’s about full surrender. It’s not about trying to squeeze God in; it’s about allowing Him to fully saturate every aspect of our lives. We must be Desperate for More of God. We have extreme sports, extreme makeovers, extreme reality shows, extreme everything. Why, then, can’t we have an extreme passion for God? This book outlines key issues designed to spark faith, challenge mediocrity, and help discern God’s will. Each chapter opens with a real-life communication. These cries for help are not isolated to a select few; they are characteristic of many of us today. But there is hope and freedom. Lasting hope and joy are by-products of seeking God wholeheartedly and unconditionally as a lifelong commitment. The fact that countless people are searching for truth reveals the great need for truth to be rediscovered. We must cultivate truth if we are to be Desperate for More of God—truth liberates, rebuilds, restores, heals, and transforms. On the flip side, one of the greatest joys associated with pastoring is seeing others filled with the Spirit of God—“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). This is what I’m seeking to do—to fan the flames of passion toward God. This book is a compilation of past articles, sections from other books I’ve written, and sermons preached at Westside Christian Fellowship—the best of the best. We pray that this collection of targeted topics fuels an intense desire for more of God. Though the road ahead may be uncertain at times, the solid ground beneath will never shift. It’s all about Who you know. Desperate for More of God should be the heart cry of every believer. —Located at the end of each chapter— • Related sermon links are provided for ebook users. Feel free to share these with others as long as you reference this book. • Group study questions highlight important points from each chapter. Each question will encourage dialogue and motivate readers to search the Bible for answers. Don’t simply glance over Scripture references, even if you’ve read them before; read them again to see how each relates to you today. We cannot seek God with all our heart and reject His Truth. CHAPTER ONE: Desperate for Truth WHERE YOU LOOK IS WHAT YOU FIND “I’m confused, desperate, and angry. My life lacks direction and purpose. How can I know that truth really exists?” Former atheist who was baptized in 2012 arkness and dense fog forced the captain to maneuver anxiously through uncertain waters. The eerie silence was shattered as he faced his greatest fear. Through the thick Dfog, a faint light signaled disaster. He was on a collision course; another light was fast approaching.
