Thus individuals' identities, such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status, and the oppression these can lead to have clinical implications. The current research sought to investigate the intersection of Black Canadian women's identities and how it contributes to their unique experience of depression and coping. The aim of this study was to identify significant experiences of depression and coping of this population in order to develop a theory of healing. The current literature on Black female depression is dominated by Black American and Black British women’s experiences. Black Canadian women’s experiences resemble those of these groups in terms of marginalization, discrimination, and unequal access. However, patterns of migration and the specifics of race relations and diversity issues differ between these countries. To address this gap in the literature, this study specifically explored Black Canadian women's experiences of depression and how they cope. The participants in the study were 20 Black Canadian women who self-diagnosed with depression. This research employed a qualitative methodology of constructivist grounded theory to provide a detailed description of the participants’ journeys through depression, coping, and ii healing. The findings suggest that there are distinct and unique ways of experiencing and coping with depression among Black Canadian women. Healing was revealed to be a relational phenomenon involving self, family, and community. A theoretical framework of healing was developed from the interconnections of the multiple complex layers of the healing process. Isolating the themes of the Strong Black Woman, mother- daughter relationships, and transgenerational trauma/resilience transmission provided a means to illustrate their paradoxical influences on depression. These themes illustrate the reality of Black Canadian women’s lives dealing with depression. Understanding the role that the stereotype of the Strong Black Woman and intergenerational relations play in depression and recognizing the importance of community engagement and self-definition puts Black Canadian women on the road to healing. iii Acknowledgments In line with the popular African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” I say that it takes a village to produce a dissertation (Timothy, 2007). I am humbled by their resilience and by their willingness to expose the most intimate parts of themselves to let other Black Canadian women struggling with depression know that they are not alone. Remarkably, they have also shared wisdom to guide mental health practitioners in their work. Second, I thank my family and friends: My husband, Dave, for everything he has done for me—this project would not have been possible without his understanding and commitment. His love, encouragement, and compassion will never be forgotten: he is a very special person. I thank my children, Solagne and Quinn, for understanding why Mommy couldn’t always be there. Lessons from Abnormal Psychology Textbooks Abstract We examined 70 abnormal psychology textbooks published from 1920s to the present to identify consistent cross-cultural themes with regard to human depressive experiences over time and across regions of the world. The cultural and cross-cultural literature on abnormality and depression, in particular, has contributed to widening the scope of abnormal psychology textbooks over time. However, the texts are almost entirely dependent on Western diagnostic categories, particularly with regard to definitions of depression. Within the Western classification framework, authors of abnormal psychology textbooks have increasingly recognized the role of culture in depressive experiences and their communication. On the basis of our content analysis of the textbooks, we propose 10 culturally informed questions to study the relationship between culture and depression.

Rural women’s experiences of depression are of concern because of the barriers they face in accessing services and health care, due in part to factors such as isolation, violence, stigma, stoicism, and poverty (Alston et al., 2006). Despite numerous studies on depression, the literature contains only one mixed methods study and one qualitative study that address the topic of rural Australian women’s experiences of depression. This thesis argues that women’s experiences and experiential knowledge, as well as the challenges faced by women living in the bush, have not been adequately considered by previous research and that the accounts of these women are valid as a source of knowledge in their own right. Hearing from women about their lived experiences provides a rich source of information that may not be revealed without a qualitative study that begins and ends with the women as the central focus. The overall purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of women who were experiencing depression within the context of rural NSW.

In particular, an understanding of the processes and mechanisms through which culture influences depression is important not only to clinical practice, but also in the designing of interventions to promote resilience to depression. For example, such cultural understanding helps therapists to determine whether and when clients will be influenced by culture and its norms, and accordingly, the impact on their expression, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of depression. The present thesis adopts a social identity perspective to advance research on the cultural underpinnings of depression in three research streams that investigate (a) the symptomatic presentation of depression, (b) cultural factors associated with vulnerability, and (c) resilience, to depression. Much of the work on the relationship between culture and the expression of depression has centered on Asians‟ tendency to emphasize somatic symptoms of the condition over psychological symptoms. However, despite extensive investigation of Asian somatization, there has been little progress in explaining how and when culture affects depression expression. To address this gap, the studies in Chapter 2 drew on social identity principles and processes to explain when culture and its norms would affect somatization. Three studies were conducted to investigate the role of cultural identity on somatization; predicting that norm endorsement would occur only when individuals identified with their culture.

To my LORD who gives me HOPE. Acknowledgment The quantitative research design adopted some of the earlier research methodologies developed by the Black Dog Institute. The author drafted the survey form of the current study (both the Chinese and English versions). Co-researchers Professor Gordon Parker (GP) and Professor Maurice Eisenbruch (ME) provided input to revise the initial drafts before pilot studies were conducted to test the instruments. The author collected and analysed ALL the data. The qualitative research design was developed while the author was attending a series of qualitative seminars by A/Professor Jan Ritchie (JR). The conceptual frameworks and ethnographic methods were also crystallised through participation in the Culture, Health and Illness program and by other activities of the Centre for Culture and Health under the direction of ME. The author then developed the two vignettes with input from ME. Subsequently five pilot focus groups was conducted to establish the protocols for facilitating focus groups using different languages. The author collected qualitative data by facilitating a total of 16 focus groups. JR provided some input regarding the framework for conducting theme analysis. The author then perform ALL coding and theme analyses using NVivo 2.

A number of worldwide constants in the incidence and mode of expression of psychological disorders are identified, especially in relation to schizophrenia and depression. The scope of variation of psychopathological manifestations across cultures is impressive. US American participants reported higher levels of depression and stress compared to their Chinese counterparts, and stress was strongly and positively associated with depression for both cultural groups. These results suggest that stress fully mediates the cultural difference in depression. Contrary to our hypotheses, however, there were no cultural differences in IU nor mindfulness.
