Brief but Solid and HelpfulBy Clarinet PlayerVery helpful, if short, work applying the insights of Vos, Ridderbos, and John Murray on soteriology by way of the developments of Dr. Gaffin to articulate an understanding of Paul's ordo salutis. Naturally, this comes across in terms of the relationship between the historia salutis as Paul's controlling paradigm and the ordo salutis as each individual believer's experience of being united to Christ in his death and resurrection. The realized-eschatological dimension of Paul's soteriology is emphasized and utilized to answer some contemporary questions about future aspects of justification in a balanced, biblical way that's very helpful. My two wishes for more material in this book were: helpful ways of articulating the experience of salvation for OT saints prior to the incarnate Christ to whom New Covenant believers are alone truly existentially united (although I've been privileged to hear Dr. Gaffin address this question more thoroughly live in lectures, and very helpfully so); and a more extended discussion of James' explanation of justification in comparison to Paul's doctrine of justification, especially in reference to the various points of Abraham's faith journey in Genesis that are referenced in Paul and James (Genesis 15 as over against Genesis 22).Still, if brief, an excellent summary of Paul's basic categories of Christian soteriology, and how these structures help to address a few contemporary issues in Pauline studies.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Outstanding Book On The Salvation Christians Have in ChristBy BCRAWBuilding on the insights of the Reformation and Biblical studies since then, Gaffin lays out in succinct fashion Paul's theology of salvation as centered upon union with Christ. This is a great book that not only teaches the reality mentioned above from Scripture, but also ties together the strands of Reformed teaching with newer ground that's been broken regarding the role of the resurrection and eschatology in Paul's theology.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy James Y. LiuAuthor provides in depth view of how God's salvation works in the lives of humans. For serious readers. Proponents of the “New Perspective” on Paul generally reject or minimize the concept of an ordo salutis (“order of salvation”) in his writings. Building on the biblical-theological groundwork of the Reformed tradition, Richard B. Gaffin Jr. explores Paul’s understanding of how individuals receive salvation. Even Peter acknowledged that Paul wrote some things that are hard to understand, yet the central elements of Paul’s teaching are clearly explained by Gaffin as he unfolds Paul’s focus on Christ’s death and resurrection and the essence of his ordo salutis."This is a very good book—one of the best books on soteriology I've read. masterfully shows the centrality of union with Christ in his death and resurrection and the eschatological impact of those key gospel events on the believer's salvation.”—Brian Hedges, Author, Christ Formed in You “Richard Gaffin brings together a lifetime of reflection on Paul’s letters with his expertise in the field of systematic theology to produce this encouraging study.”—David Peterson, Former Principal, Oak Hill College, LondonRichard B. Should be in the hands of ever minister of the Word and student of Scripture." --Guy Prentiss Waters, Professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson"No one can read this book without being struck again by the depth and coherence of the apostle's teaching—and by Gaffin’s skill in expounding it." --Moises Silva, Formerly Professor of New Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"Brings clarity and precision to recent discussions concerning the content of the divinely revealed gospel proclaimed by the apostle Paul." --Dennis E.
