Jack J. Peterson, Moderator of the Thirty-ninth General Assembly. Mr. Peterson consti- tuted the meeting with a worship service and delivered a sermon on the subject, “Led in Triumph,” based on I1 Corinthians 2: 14-17. The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered by Mr. Peterson, assisted by the Rev. Ralph E. Clough, and by Elders Norman E. Byer (Manhattan Beach), John L. Kortenhoven (La Mirada), Robert A. On motion, Dr. Davis’ request to be excused at the close of the Thursday morning session was granted. On motion, Mr. Waggoner’s request to be excused at the close of the Thursday afternoon session was granted. Mr. Barker presented the report of the Slated Clerk as follows: 6 FORTIETHGENERAL ASSEMBLY REPORT OF THE STATED CLERK The Minutes of the Thirty-ninth General Assembly are presented herewith. The Minutes were transmitted to the printer in July, 1972, and were published and dis- tributed in November, 1972. Three minor errors have been reported to the Clerk. They are the second longest minutes to date. Publication of the Minutes required two months less than the previous Minutes. The Clerk’s goal is to reduce this period still further, even though factors not under his control influence the time required €or publication. The deadline that the Clerk had set for distribution of the Agenda for the 40th General Assembly, namely, April 13, was missed by ten days. Even so, the reports of several committees, and the statistical report, had to be included in a Supplementary Agenda. The Clerk has done all that seemed reasonable to him to do to comply with Standing Rule, Chapter IVY Section 3.e., yet has not met its stipulation that the agenda “should be mailed to commissioners one month prior to the Assembly.” If the distribution of the Agenda is to comply with the requirement of the Stand- ing Rules, reports must be in the Clerk‘s hands earlier. In both 1972 and 1973, com- mittees have been asked to submit their reports on or about February 15. In both years, the bulk of the reports, and especially the longer reports, were not received until after March 1. This leaves too little lead time for all that must be done between receipt of the reports and publication of the Agenda. The Clerk therefore makes recommendation ( 1) below. The implementation of a representative General Assembly has proceeded, from the Clerk’s vantage point, smoothly and with commendable cooperation from the presbyteries and their Clerks. For the purpose of fully implementing the advisory committee system, it is desirable in the future that commissioners be selected, and the Stated Clerk advised, earlier than most presbyteries did this year. VanGemeren Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, USA Introduction: The Occasion for this Paper A recent publication on Christocentricity2 led me to reflect some more on John Calvin’s approach to messianic prophecies. Several faculty members of Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), representing the classical theological areas (OT, NT, and ST), have outlined definitive hermeneutics that defines the Westminster approach to biblical interpretation, biblical theology, and systematic theology. Both the Board and Faculty are now unanimous as to the implications of Westminster’s historic mission, as President Lillback writes, “The seminary today continues to believe that the hermeneutical method identified in the Reformation tradition of Westminster is biblically sound and in fact essential for a high view of Scripture in an age of doubt, controversy, and compromise.” (6) Permit me to enter briefly into the fray of my alma mater. I matriculated at Westminster nearly fifty years ago. It was a critical time in her history, because the theologian, John Murray, had recently retired (1966) and the Old Testament scholar, Edward J. Young, had passed away (1968). Of the founding fathers, Cornelius Van Til (1895-1987) was still teaching apologetics. It was also a joy to be introduced to biblical theology by Edmund Clowney, Meredith G. Kline, and Richard Gaffin. 1. As John Muether reminds us in the lead article this month, “The Reformed Faith and the Challenge of Islam,” unless we read more widely our view of Islam will be formed by the militant Muslims constantly in the news. Muether’s goal is to “supplement Dr. Estelle’s helpful article [“How Should the Reformed Church Respond to Islam?” published in Ordained Servant in 2008] by pointing out some strategies that are popular but may be counterproductive and even a hindrance to faithful Christian witness to the Muslim world.” Muether demonstrates the importance of the Reformed faith in missions to Islam by quoting missionary and Princeton Theological Seminary professor Samuel Zwemer (1867–1952), “only the Reformed faith can witness effectively to Islam.” Bryan Estelle reviews two important new books on Islam: Mindy Belz, They Say We Are Infidels and Darío Fernández-Morera, The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise.
