LILLBACK CHURCH HISTORY Rev. Dr. Peter Lillback (PhD, Westminster Theological Semi- nary) is president and professor of historical theology and church history at Westminster Theological Seminary. He also serves as the president of The Providence Forum and senior editor of the new Unio cum Christo: An International Journal of Reformed Theology and Life. Dr. Lillback’s academic interests include church history, the doctrine of Scripture, public theology, the theology of John Cal- vin, Johannine Theology, and Christianity as it relates to Amer- ican history. For those who are new to Dr. Lillback’s writing and teaching on his research interests, he recommends several re- sources as places to start. On Calvin, he would recommend start- ing with his work co-edited with David Hall, A Theological Guide to Calvin’s Institutes: Essays and Analysis, as well as his lecture “The Place of Covenant in Calvin’s Theology.” Also consider his course Covenant Theology, available free online from Westminster, which specifically focuses on Calvin’s contribution to the development of cov- enant theology during the Reformation. Concerning Dr. Lillback’s research on Christianity in American history, he would recommend his publications George Washington’s Sacred Fire and Wall of Misconception, or his lecture “The American Presbyterian Experience of Religious Liberty and the American Amendments to the Westminster Confession.” On the doctrine of Scripture, he recommends his recent work co-edited with Dr. Richard Gaffin Thy Word Is Still Truth, which is a survey of essential writings on the doctrine of Scripture from the Reformation to today. It is Dr. Lillback’s pleasure, as president, to host a variety of prominent teachers and speakers at Westminster, which he will also share on this site. For example, it was his joy to help establish the Richard B. Gaffin Lectures on Theology, Culture, and Mission, an annual lecture series in honor of the great biblical theologian and Westminster professor emeritus Dr. Richard Gaffin.     MSJ 29/2 (Fall 2018) 127–55 PREMILLENNIALISM AND HERMENEUTICS Brad Klassen Associate Professor of Bible Exposition The Master’s Seminary The purpose of this article is to identify the primary hermeneutical issues at the center of the divide over eschatology, while providing a brief premillennial response to each. The first of these issues concerns the legitimacy of literal interpretation with respect to prophetic texts. The second concerns the function of progressive revelation and the relationship of subsequent revelation to antecedent revelation. The third con- cerns the influence of presupposition, particularly as it relates to the analogy of faith and the impact of Platonic dualism on the Christian’s approach to Scripture. * * * * * Introduction Discussions about biblical eschatology—the study of the Bible’s teaching about future things—divide over one pivotal event: the timing of the second coming of Jesus Christ. In particular, disagreement over this central piece in God’s redemptive plan relates to what the apostle John described as a “thousand-year” reign of the Messiah in Revelation 20:1–6.1 Three general positions developed throughout church history. First, the oldest view of the church, premillennialism,2 contends that the second coming of Christ occurs prior to (“pre-”) the millennium described by John.3 In other words, premillennialism teaches that Christ will return in order to establish a physical kingdom on earth as described by a non-figurative interpretation of Revelation 20:1– 1 The phrase “thousand years” (χίλια ἔτη) is repeated six times in Revelation 20:1–7. VanGemeren Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, USA Introduction: The Occasion for this Paper A recent publication on Christocentricity2 led me to reflect some more on John Calvin’s approach to messianic prophecies. Several faculty members of Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), representing the classical theological areas (OT, NT, and ST), have outlined definitive hermeneutics that defines the Westminster approach to biblical interpretation, biblical theology, and systematic theology. Both the Board and Faculty are now unanimous as to the implications of Westminster’s historic mission, as President Lillback writes, “The seminary today continues to believe that the hermeneutical method identified in the Reformation tradition of Westminster is biblically sound and in fact essential for a high view of Scripture in an age of doubt, controversy, and compromise.” (6) Permit me to enter briefly into the fray of my alma mater. I matriculated at Westminster nearly fifty years ago. It was a critical time in her history, because the theologian, John Murray, had recently retired (1966) and the Old Testament scholar, Edward J. Young, had passed away (1968). Of the founding fathers, Cornelius Van Til (1895-1987) was still teaching apologetics. It was also a joy to be introduced to biblical theology by Edmund Clowney, Meredith G. Kline, and Richard Gaffin. 1. Particular lines of inquiry are seen to converge in a hermeneutical focus. Specific issues are considered to be reducible to a hermeneutical common denominator. In a word, the problem — for it is recognized to be such — the problem of hermeneutics is felt to be the theological problem par excellence.
