3 CSI takes No. 1 ranking and experience into the 2012 season

When College of Southern Idaho volleyball head coach Heidi Cartisser looks out on the court or down her bench this season, she will see a lot of familiar faces. The Golden Eagles return five starters and eight total play- ers along with a mid-semester transfer from last year. Add to that two sophomore transfers and CSI is loaded with maturity and experience. “There is no question that we have a lot of depth on our team,” Cartisser said. “We will be able to run differ- ent combinations as well as switching between a 6-2 or 5-1 offense with different people in different positions.” Having this group return is even more significant because last season’s team placed sixth at the national tour- nament. The pollsters rewarded that experience by placing the No. 1 banner on the Golden Eagles in the pre- season NJCAA poll. Keying the offense will be the defense and Cartisser will look to returning Region 18 Libero of the Year Heather Meeuwsen. She will be joined in the back row by freshmen defensive specialists Braiden Johnston (Prineville, Ore.) and Miranda Duran (Pocatello). At the setter position, Cartisser can run a 5-1 offense with returning starter Ashia Joseph or run a 6-2 with Joseph and returning setter Marie Fujii. Joseph ranked third in the league in assists per game. The middle blocker position will be a very competitive spot for the Golden Ea- gles. Kaylee Holmstead, who red-shirted last season, moved back to the middle this year along with sophomore Brooke Jensen who saw a lot of action late in her fresh- man season. They will be joined by trans- fers Kristen Brandsma (Carroll College) and Eseta Maka (San Diego State). Add to them freshman Alyssa Povey (Clifton, Idaho) and Cartisser will be able to rotate all five very easily. Returning starters Liene Mellupe and Keani Passi will anchor the right side in a 6-2 offense or give Cartisser the option of moving either one of them to the outside. Freshman Alexandria Johnson (Las Vegas) at 6-5 gives CSI another big block option on the right side. On the outside, Cartisser can look to returning starter Emily Ottinger, transfer Tineke Bierma (Portland State Univ.) or freshman Milica Zmiric (Serbia). “We will be a very good ball control team that will be able to make good ajust-

4 ments in out-of-system play,” Cartisser said. “We have the ability to force oppo- 2012 Outlook nents to do something different against us to beat us.” But getting out of Region 18 will be tough as always. Three Region 18 teams enter the season ranked in the top 12 in the nation. Only two qualify for the national tournament. “Once again the region is going to be extremely tough. Several of the teams are good enough to compete for a national championship,” Cartisser said. “We look forward to the challenge but expect a lot of our returning play- ers. I know we have the ability to make a great run.”

5 Heidi Cartisser Head Coach 7th Season Heidi Cartisser joined the College of Southern Idaho as the head coach in fall of 2006. She led the Golden Eagles to their 9th NJCAA National Champi- onship in 2009 and a sixth-place finish last season. It was her third trip to the national tournament. In 2007, Cartisser led CSI to a Region 18A championship and a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships. In her five years at CSI, Cartisser has compiled a 177-62 record. The former Golden Eagle, who played at CSI from 1991-1993, graduated from Albertson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995. Her coaching career began at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Ore. Cartisser coached the Chukars from 1995-2000. At that time, TVCC was a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. In 1997, Car- tisser led TVCC to the regional playoffs for the first time in 19 years. After coaching at Treasure Valley, Cartisser took the head coaching job at Chicago State University. CSU competes in the Mid-Continent Conference. In her first year at Chicago State, the team won more matches than the previous seven years combined and won its first conference match in school history. In her second season, the team improved statistically in almost every category and won more conference matches than the previous year. In 2003, Chicago State finished fourth in the conference, posting the highest conference finish ever in school history. In her last season there, CSU finished with the most wins ever by the Division I school. Cartisser moved back to the Magic Valley area in the spring of 2005 with her family. Her husband Jim as- sisted at the College of Southern Idaho in the fall of 2005, helping the Golden Eagles to their eighth national champion- ship and rejoins the Eagles this season to assist Heidi. Cartisser and her husband Jim have five children - Cody, Canyon, Cason, Cailey and Carli.

6 Jim Cartisser Assistant Coach 2nd Season

Jim Cartisser begins his second stint with the College of Southern Idaho volleyball program, this time assisting head coach Heidi Car- tisser. Jim was an assistant in 2005, helping the Golden Eagles to their eighth national championship. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Chicago State University for five years. He has served as director of Club Canyon, a local volleyball club for the past six years. “We are excited to have Jim on the staff,” said CSI Athletic Direc- tor Joel Bate. “Jim brings a wealth of experience to the program as an assistant coach and has dedicated himself to helping younger student athletes better themselves in the fundamentals of the game. He will be a great teacher and his recruiting talents are amazing.”

“It’s exciting to have Jim back on the floor full time. He does a tremendous job recruiting, knowing how to find and evaluate great talent. His expertise with the technical game will be a great value to CSI.” - -Heidi Cartisser

Heidi and Jim’s children pic- tured from left to right: Carli, Cailey, Cason, Canyon, Cody.

7 Babes Kalulu Volunteer Assistant Coach 7th Season

Babes brings playing experience and an enthusiasm for the game of volleyball to the court. A family affair, Babes follows in the footsteps of her sister All-American Aneli Cubi-Otineru who played for CSI in 2005 and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a national championship. An- other sister, Kawena Cubi-Otineru played for CSI in 2006, the first year Kalulu assisted for the Golden Eagles. She began her volleyball career, playing club ball for the Kame- hameha club team in Hawaii in seventh grade. She continued to compete for that team for five years. A standout at University of Hawaii Lab High School, Babes led them to four state championships. In 1986, Babes competed on the 16U Junior National team, earning all-tournament honors. Babes played one year at the University of Hawaii, ranking sixth all time since 1985 in service aces per game. In 65 games, she recorded 26 aces. Kalulu has four children - Darren, Daylen, Darian and Del.

“Babes is the type of person that will do anything you ask her to do. She un- derstands the game of volleyball so well and is always willing to help wherever needed. Babes teaches players how to be intense and focused while taking the love of the game to another level.” -Heidi Cartisser

Athletic Director Joel Bate

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
