2018 Gecko Studio Gallery presents

Australian linocut artist Aileen Brown, born 1946, is a recognised print maker on the national scene. Her linocuts are distinguished by a particular and unique technical expertise. Aileen reaffirms the 1920’s practice of producing prints coloured from the block rather than hand coloured. This painstaking process has sometimes included as many as twelve different applications on each print with each needing to be situated exactly to ensure its perfect placement within the overall design.

Aileen has had many solo exhibitions since 1986 as well as some book illustrations. Her works can be found in print collections at Bendigo Regional Gallery, State Libraries of Queensland, and New South Wales, Museum of , Deakin and Melbourne University, and National Library of . She also offers intensive linocutting classes at her Melbourne studio.

Aileen’s linocuts demonstrate mastery of colour, composition and design, coupled with sensitivity and wit. Each limited edition linocut print is signed and numbered by Aileen Brown. Aileen also regularly exhibits at Artemis Gallery in South Yarra. This will be Aileen’s fourth exhibition at Gecko Studio Gallery - starting with exhibition #6 in 2007, exhibition #30 in 2009, exhibition #54 in 2011 and exhibition #82 in 2013. Enough water under the bridge - time to see what Aileen is creating now!

Go to Aileen’s webpage (https://www.aileenbrown.com/ ) where she has lots of text and images showing the technical side to her linocut printmaking.

Gecko Studio Gallery is FOR SALE

Well, the time has come.....after 12 years of Gecko, we have decided to put our beloved property and business on the market. Since renovating during winter of 2017 to install HeadQuarters cafe into the mix, we have worked extra hard to ensure Gecko has remained vibrant and unique, and we now feel we are ready to let go of the reins to pursue our art and artisan careers on a more full-time basis. Whilst we will be sad to say goodbye to the business and property, we intend to keep our framing business operating from our home in Fish Creek East....along with new ventures yet to be realised. Below is the wording scripted for the real estate advert....please feel free to share this around…

‘Situated in the heart of Fish Creek at 15 Falls Road, this unique property which has been the home of Gecko Studio Gallery for the past 12 years, is now available for sale. Sitting alongside the Fish Creek Memorial Hall, and opposite the local village park and playground, it is the ideal location. This stand alone commercial property houses a vibrant and busy contemporary art gallery with a recently installed cafe featuring a class 2 kitchen, a fully renovated attached residence, stunning private garden, separate studio workshop, storeroom with garage and a covered carport. The property is on mains water plus two 20,000 litre water tanks plumbed to laundry and toilets, a 3kw solar system, reverse cycle aircons in gallery, cafe and residence and a highly efficient Nectre wood heater. Along with a large glass shopfront entrance on the main street and a garden courtyard side entrance with an all access door, there is rear access to the property from Ryan St. The attached residence which has been operating as short term tourist accommodation in recent years - known as the ArtHouse, is a stylish, light filled modern cottage with beautifully maintained private garden. Gecko Studio Gallery has been instrumental as a key business in the artistic and cultural transformation of this small town, and is renowned for its presentation of quality art exhibitions, local artisan made wares and an extensive range of quality art materials. With the inclusion of the cafe after extensive renovations in July 2017, it is also a highly popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Offered as a going concern, with or without stock, equipment and fittings, this is a unique opportunity to make that lifestyle change and become part of a wonderful small and vibrant community.’

● THE BACKSLIDERS Saturday April 27. Doors: 7pm, Show 8pm Tickets $40. Formed in 1986 by guitarist Dom Turner, Backsliders quickly became festival favourites, a tag they carry to this day, almost thirty years later. The line-up boasts the drumming talents of Rob Hirst, along with the alternating harmonica attack of Ian Collard, Joe Glover and Broderick Smith backing Hirst and Turner to the hilt. It’s a lineup that carries serious weight, not just on the Australian blues scene, but across genres and styles the world over. These guys are renowned for captivating live shows - an eclectic mix of blues styles moving from driving delta blues riffs and jungle-like rhythms to ‘Piedmont’ blues influenced ‘all-acoustic’ unplugged treatments of 1920’s songs by blues heroes such as Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Johnson. The achievements, success and reviews over the band’s 30 years tell it all.

● CASH SAVAGE & THE LAST DRINKS Saturday May 4th Doors 7p.m. Show 8 p.m. Tickets $35 Having towered over festival audiences at Golden Plains, Boogie and Sydney Festival, selling out Melbourne venues, and earning rave reviews for her recent packed-out Sydney show, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are on a mighty roll. The band has also made serious inroads in Europe, playing to huge crowds at festivals such as Binic Festival (FR), Rock For People (CZ) and Colours Festival (CZ). Known for their epic live shows, Cash Savage and The Last Drinks released their fourth studio album Good Citizens in 2018. Good Citizens raises the stakes and signals the ascent of Cash Savage and the Last Drinks as one of the heavy hitters of Australian music’s new era. An incandescent live band at the height of their powers, led by their mighty frontwoman, whose potent lyrics and impassioned delivery articulate the personal-political issues of these times with all her heart, guts and grit. “Next to Courtney Barnett, she is one of the most original and distinctively Australian voices to emerge in the last few years.” Daily Review

● SUN KIL MOON Friday 17th May, 2019 8pm $55 San Francisco based singer-songwriter Sun Kil Moon (Mark Kozelek) returns to Australia in May for a very special east-coast tour.

Sun Kil Moon continues to command a firm reputation for prolific, profound recorded output and exemplary live capabilities. The Guardian hailed Sun Kil Moon’s live offering “utterly magnificent”, Brooklyn Vegan declaring it “one of the most surprising and fulfilling show-going experiences I’ve had in years.”

Take a seat and strap in for over two hours of Sun Kil Moon who is set to deliver an unparalleled, unforgettable live music experience. Please note. No support for this tour. Sun Kil Moon will be playing a 2.5 hour set at all shows.

● JEFF TWEEDY SOLD OUT Friday 24th May, 2019. 8pm Tickets $105 On Sale Friday 9.a.m. February 22 https://youtu.be/zz2v2Ix7FwE Grammy Award winning artist Jeff Tweedy, the founding member and leader of the American rock band Wilco, and before that, the co-founder of the alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, is heading to Australia for his first ever solo tour this May. Jeff Tweedy will be playing songs from all stages of his career to date. Jeff Tweedy is one of contemporary American music's most accomplished songwriters, musicians, and performers.

● ERIC BIBB AND BAND SOLD OUT SATURDAY MAY 25 – MEENIYAN TOWN HALL. DOORS: 7pm, SHOW 8pm Tickets $75 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uspc7u2RuOw A five-decade career recording with folk and blues royalty. Two Grammy nominations and multiple Blues Foundation awards. A following that not only crosses borders, it crosses continents. But what Eric Bibb is after is much, much larger than that. Eric is an artist who preserves the best traditions of pre-war blues, even while he expands his own oeuvre. Marketing tags him as a bluesman, but troubadour is the word that best describes him. He slides neatly between genres as he builds bridges with musicians from the UK and Europe, pickers from North America, and Kora players from West Africa. His collaborations with the likes of Michael Jerome Browne, JJ Milteau, Danny Thompson, and Habib Koite have produced music that is both ecstatic and exquisite.

Eric sings of the Freedom Train. He believes it. He lives it. He wants to take us on that ride. Maybe you already have your ticket. But if you haven’t, no need to worry. There’s still time to get on board.

Tammi Savoy and The Chris Casello Combo Fri July 5 DOORS: 7pm, SHOW 8pm; Tickets $65

https://youtu.be/n1oQis8FM90

Imagine a young woman with a powerful soulful voice that nails the classic 40’s,50s and early 60s R&B and rock and roll sounds. Match that with a great stage presence and drop-dead gorgeous looks with a perfect visual adherence to mid-century vintage style. Now combine her with the killer rockabilly instrumentation of slapping upright bass, swinging drums and virtuoso guitar and you’ve got Tammi Savoy and The Chris Casello Combo. Tammi grew up listening to classic rhythm and Blues, rock ’n’ roll and jazz. She is the baby sister of the multi-platinum contemporary R&B Group “Next”. Tammi however digs deep into the roots of American soul. She effortlessly captures the feel and sounds of Ruth Brown, Laverne Baker, Sarah Vaughan and other greats. Tammi Savoy is also the 2019 Ameripolitan Award recipient for Female Rockabilly Artist. Chris Casello is a veteran of Detroit, Nashville and Chicago music scenes. He was the 2017 Ameripolitan Award recipient for Musician of the Year and voted Nashville Scene’s “Honk Tonk Hero” and Critic’s Choice in 2012. Chris is also a 2nd generation inductee to The Rockabilly Hall of Fame, and enjoyed long working relationships with ‘50s greats including Johnny Powers, Jack Scott, Billy Lee Riley and the truly legendary Bo Diddley. He has also worked professionally with Wanda Jackson, Wayne Hancock, Marty Stuart, Rosie Flores and others. He has performed everywhere from The Lincoln Centre to the Grand Ol’ Opry. After meeting at a gig in Chicago a couple of years ago, Tammi and Chris started jamming and recording. The recordings from those sessions started receiving an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from those who were privy to hearing them. The group has released a six song CDEP and a 7” vinyl record on Swelltune Records and has made appearances at Viva Las Vegas, The Nashville Boogie, The 11

New England Shake-Up and numerous other festivals - from rockabilly, blues and jazz to hot rod shows - in the U.S. and around the world.

● ROBERT FORSTER Saturday 6th July Meeniyan Town Hall Tickets $50

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uspc7u2RuOw

‘Inferno’ is acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster's first solo album in 4 years - his second album over the last eleven years. Forster only makes records when he feels he has the songs - on ‘Inferno’, he has 9 he totally believes in. They range from the exhilarating top ten pop of ‘Inferno (Brisbane In Summer)’, the beach shack groove of ‘Life Has Turned a Page’, via ‘Remain’s 1977 New York strut, to finish in a way that this concise, brilliant, drama and wit filled album only can – on the big build epic ‘One Bird In The Sky’. ‘Inferno’ was made in Berlin in 2018, during the hottest German summer in decades. Noted producer/engineer Victor Van Vugt (Beth Orton ‘Trailor Park’, P J Harvey ‘Stories of the City, Stories from the Sea’), recorded the album; the first time he and Forster had worked together since Van Vugt engineered Forster’s debut solo album classic ‘Danger In The Past’ in Berlin in 1990. ‘Inferno’ in its making is a perfect mix of the familiar and the new. Also working with Forster again, are Brisbane based multi-instrumentalists Scott Bromiley and Karin Bãumler from ‘Songs To Play’ (2015). While, new recruits are drummer Earl Havin (Tindersticks, Mary J. Blige) and keyboardist Michael Muhlhaus (Blumfeld, Kante). Four musicians from the corners of the world, who, with Van Vugt’s bold and beautiful production, sound like a band of the ages. In front of them, Forster delivers the best vocal performances of his career.

For over forty years he has written songs that capture what it is to be Australian. Collected here, for the first time, are lyrics from his extensive career: from ‘Khe Sanh’ to ‘Flame Trees’, ‘Looking Forward Looking Back to ‘Harry Was a Bad Bugger’, Walker’s words are poetic, moving and incisive. These words live on the page, with or without the memory of music. Songs will be released via Black Inc. on Monday, July1, 2019, and will available in Hardback. Interspersed with autobiographical sketches and anecdotes, and with an exclusive introduction by Jimmy Barnes, Songs is a must-have for fans of Walker’s brilliant, razor-sharp storytelling. Also released on the same day will be the widely applauded Shots on Hardback for the first time. His stories written on the pages of the book lie silent, but as you read them they come to life. ‘I can still hear the melodies but while I read the book, the music seems to fade into the background and new melodies, new meanings present themselves.’—Jimmy Barnes ‘His lyrics are lean, clear-eyed, love-thirsty and lonesome. A bulls-eye straight to the human heart.’— Paul Kelly 'Don’s words are truly a thing of wonder.’—Peter Garrett

Wine of the Month: DIN! is the brainchild of Dean ‘Din’ Roberts, who is also half of the driving force behind Lithostylis. Dean picked up his nickname while travelling in Russia and given his pathological desire to create music (Noise! Raucous Din!) it became a keeper. The Din Pinot's Noir are made from the same magical plot of red soil that the Lithostylis Obelisk Pinot Noir is grown on. Archeological evidence of the area suggests that Unicorn’s may have chosen this exact location as a meeting place, endowing it with mystical significance…..at the very least, the soil is derived from volcanic basalt and it’s pretty special. When not making wine, Din can be heard creating feedback from his electric guitar on stages throughout Outtrim. DIN v15 Pinot Noir Lithostylis 2012 Cuvée Oberon Sparkling

Artist of the Month: Rhiannon Nix- Photos of Albuquerque Rhiannon loves photos. Simple. It’s a window into someone’s experiences, thoughts, feelings… Where did that person go? What impacted them? What made them hungry, thirsty, mad…optimistic? Photos express a dynamic that words most often cannot. A dynamic that is theirs…and becomes yours. These photos are of New Mexico. A land that is majestic in a simplistic way. It does not boggle the eyes with a visual smorgasbord of lights, buildings, neon. But its vistas, its skies…its land…is unrivalled. Brilliant colours pop in a canvas of dusky, winter greens. And you will find. No. Better. Sky. Anywhere. I hope these colours and textures take you somewhere as they did me.
