All have shiny coats, all have dapples and all are eating well, you wonder what makes one have a bigger engine than the others or be that good.” McDermott, comparing Snap Decision to other horses “My neck doesn’t work the best, it’s a bit creaky from some injuries, so the big screen is the best place to look.” McDermott, on peeking at Saratoga’s infield screen for competition “He’s getting a lot of free dinners and free beers out of this. Everything is experience. I found out when I was 28 But as a racing fan, paradise lays in Saratoga County, just south of the Hudson, for eight how dumb I was when I was 18. When I was 38 I found out how dumb weeks every year. I was at 28. And it continues on. Doesn’t matter what you do in life. I’ve only been to Saratoga once, in 2009. Invited guests of the Clancys, sort of. Waking up Experience. That’s the thing in this sport.” every morning at 5 a.m. as the sun was coming up, and walking the half-mile from our rental Trainer David Donk, also a part-time philosopher apparently house over to the backside for the morning works and a cup of coffee from The Morning Line…that was paradise for me. If the Ryman Auditorium is the Mother Church, well, this was a damn close second. Up close (and sometimes personal) with many of my heroes: Johnny Velazquez, Graham Motion, Edgar Prado, Bill Mott; it’s a long list. The occasional tout looking for a tip, excited owners, nervous trainers, jockeys looking to pick up a mount, both serious and casual fans; it was a motley crew in the best of the word’s meaning. I got to see Quality Road, my early Derby horse who got injured after winning the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, put in 800-523-8143 his final work before the Travers (unfortunately, he went on to finish third). Afterward I’d ride shotgun in Sean’s golf cart, delivering the Special to the barns of countless more heroes, this time the men and women who work so hard behind the scenes, just soaking it all in, before heading back home to get ready for racing. The Saratoga backside in the morning is some- thing every racing fan should experience. I was planning to finally make the return trip this year. A good friend of mine, Randy Ger- vais, a former jockey from New Orleans and a great friend of Dallas Stewart’s, sadly passed Chair, Equine & Racing Law away last year. Every year Randy and his wife, Laurie, spent a week to 10 days vacationing in 516-741-6565 | [email protected] Saratoga, and it was always the highlight of the year for him. A few of us friends were going to go up this year to honor him, to remember him while having that coffee on the backstretch, to share our stories and just hang out for a few days, halfway to Heaven, in Paradise.
