    Island Heritage Service Historic Environment Action Plan South-West Wight Coastal Zone Isle of Wight County Archaeology and Historic Environment Service October 2008 01983 823810 archaeology @iow.gov.uk Iwight.com HEAP for South-West Wight Coastal Zone INTRODUCTION This HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography land use and settlement patterns which differentiate it from other HEAP areas. Essential characteristics of the South-West Wight Coastal Zone include the long coastline and cliffs containing fossils and archaeological material, the pattern of historic lanes, tracks and boundaries, field patterns showing evidence of open-field enclosure, valley-floor land, historic villages, hamlets and dispersed farmsteads, and vernacular architecture. The Military Road provides a scenic and historically significant route along the coast. The settlements of Mottistone, Hulverstone, Brighstone and Shorwell straddle the boundary between this Area and the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge. Historically these settlements exploited both Areas. For the sake of convenience these settlements are described in the HEAP Area document for the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge even where they fall partially within this Area. However, they are also referred to in this HEAP document where appropriate. This document considers the most significant features of the historic landscape, the most important forces for change, and the key management issues. Actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. The Character Area boundaries are inevitably subjective in complex environments, and are based not only on architectural, land-use or historic attributes, but on the dynamic experience of walking or driving through an area. Map based boundaries are taken into consideration, but sensational qualities such as the awareness of enclosure or openness and degrees of noise and activity are also important in defining edges to Character Areas and the Conservation Area. In coastal areas, the boundaries may follow the line of the mean low water mark which is the extent of the jurisdiction of the Council and so is used for consistency. The legislation also makes provision for schemes to enhance the area, so the inclusion of areas of potential allows for schemes to be put forward which will improve the Area in keeping with its own individual character, and to the same high standard. Designation does not mean that development cannot take place within the proposed Conservation Area or within its setting.

    Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area.

MINUTES OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING (Draft) held at Seagrove Pavilion, Seaview on Tuesday 20th July 2021 at 7pm PRESENT: Cllrs Elliott (Chairman), Jenkins, Adams, Barry, Marlton, Redpath, and Colledge The Chairman welcomed Members (7) and Residents (4) Prior to the commencement of the meeting, the Chairman invited questions from the public. A resident expressed their concerns over the amount of rubbish already building up in bins around the parish as the holiday season has now started. Cllr Adams confirmed that the Isle of Wight Council have included Seaview in their selection of tourist destinations to receive extra bin collections during the Summer. The resident also asked what had happened regarding the plan to pedestrianize the High Street during the Summer as part of the Island’s high street recovery strategy – the Clerk confirmed that Cllr Hardie had requested the IWC to do this for the Summer but there had been no updates from the IWC.
