It is our job to make sure you know the difference when helping your customers select the right products for their next project so that you know you are offering the best value for their fencing dollar. Agricultural fencing is made with low carbon, medium tensile or high tensile wire. We recommend using high tensile wire products for a stronger, longer lasting and cost effective alternative to low carbon wire. High Tensile Low Carbon • Made from high carbon steel with • Made from low carbon steel with a a carbon content of .28% maximum carbon content of .10 percent • Will only stretch 1–3% before breaking • Easy to work with and fairly forgiving • Will not sag like low carbon wire stretching and elongation over time • If installed properly, high carbon wire provides a maintenance-free fence requiring no re-stretching • Higher breaking strength means fewer posts, spaced at greater distances FENCE COATINGS Selecting a wire with the proper coating is essential to protecting a fence from harsh environmental elements including humidity, sand, soil chemicals, fertilizer, salt, pollution and acid rain. Commercial Wire Zinc Aluminum • No standard minimum coating • Consists of 95% Zinc and 5% Aluminum • Not recognized by ASTM¹ • Also known as Class 20 • Galvanization will last approximately • Coating lasts 3 times longer than Class 1 3 months–1 year before signs of rust appear 50-Year Fence Class 1 • Consists of 95% Zinc and 5% Aluminum • Most economical protective coating • Also known as Class 40 used on standard fence wire • Extends the life of StaTite50® to twice the life • Considered a basic coating of Class 3 and 7 times longer than Class 1 • Galvanization will last 2-11 years in non-coastal climates 1. ASTM International is a standards monitoring organization used across many industries that develops and publishes Class 3 the technical standards for manufactured products. • Approximately 2.5 times thicker than standard Class 1 • Expected to last 13–30 years before rust appears KNOW YOUR KNOTS Hinge Joint The hinge joint is found on both low carbon and high tensile products. This is the most common knot in agricultural fencing. The knot is formed by wrapping the vertical stay wire pieces around the line wire at each intersection. This design can also absorb animal impact without damage and is the most economical knot choice available. “S” Knot The “S” knot design uses a separate piece of wire that attaches the line wire to the solid stay wire, assuring maximum strength, and prevents the fence from buckling or sagging. This design is smooth to the touch so you won’t have to worry about injuries to your animals. The knot’s strength holds up to even the strongest animal or weather impact while maintaining feibility. Fixed Knot Found on The 50-Year Fence and Solidlock® products, this design is top of the line. he fed knot utilies solid vertical stay wires, which increase the vertical strength of the fence and allow for increased post spacing. The knot is a separate piece of wire tightly wrapped around the line wire and stay wire. Fixed knot fence is very resistant to animal damage. forged Knot he forged knot is similar in appearance to the knot but utilies a much more advanced technology. he solid vertical stay wire and horiontal wires are crimped together before the knot wire is “forged” into place with thousands of pounds of force. This process creates a much stronger knot with no sharp edges that can cause damage to your animals. HOW TO READ DESCrIPTIONS 2096 All fencing product numbers follow industry style standards.
