DOLICHOCHILA Kate Vlcek, DSE, Warrnambool I have to make an amendment to my last article (in Newsletter 71) about Pterostylis sp.aff. dolichochila, the Portland Long-tongue Shell Orchid. I invited Dr Mike Duncan (one of Victoria's best orchidologists and current President of ANOS Vic.) to help me wade through the hybridization issues with P striata / alata and P aff. dolichochila and to assist me with identification. Because P aff. dolichochila is currently undescribed it can be difficult to decide whether a plant is or isn't - making it even more difficult. Mike informed me that David Jones feels there are several distinct forms of P striata /alata which upon description will be considered species in themselves so that we were also potentially looking at an undescribed but widespread coastal form of that species. So how does one d'ecidewhat one is looking atfor conservation purposes?! Mike's opinion was that I was being far too hssy with my ID of P aff .dolichochila, that anything that looked 60% or more like it could be included for conservation purposes and that I should allow for more variation within the species. Hence my population estimate has changed considerably. On top of this, some locals showed me a lovely large patch of over 200 or so plants in an area I hadn't checked, so things are really loolung up for this species and my concerns of the apparent extreme rarity have been alleviated. -

Orchidaceae is one of the two largest families of flowering plants. Wasur National Park is the habitat of many orchid species and one of the in-situ conservation areas in Papua that is very suitable for orchids. This research aimed to determine the orchid species in Seksi Pengelolaan Taman Nasional Wilayah III (SPTN III) Wasur, Wasur National Park, Merauke District, Papua Province, Indonesia and to determine the distribution of orchid species in six different types of forest. This research was conducted using the exploratory method. A total of 25 orchid species belonging to 11 genera have been identified from SPTN III Wasur. Monsoon forest is the type of forest with the highest number of orchid species, with 15 orchid species. It is followed by savanna with ten species, Melaleuca forest with ten species, woodland forest with nine species, riparian forest with six species, and Melaleuca-Eucalyptus forest with 5 species. Dendrobium smillieae and Dendrobium rigidum are the most widely distributed epiphytic orchid species, and occur in almost all forest types. -

Box 230, BABINDA 4861 Phone: 0740 671 577 Newsletter 57 December 2006 Once again, many thanks to those many members who have sent us encouraging comments after our cyclone experiences; we are now at the stage where we can appreciate all the good things that have come out of it. Marjory wrote: "We in Bundaberg have had cyclone scares over the years, but we seem to be somewhat protected by Fraser Island, and cyclones usually hit north of us or go past." Marjory feels she cannot contribute much to the Study Group as she does not have much of a collection. However, I think it is also valuable for members to record "finds" in the wild, like the Ptero.stylis sp Marjory spotted at Carnarvon Gorge and her firther observation. "At our local wallum area I have seen the flying duck orchid, probably Caleana major. It was some years ago. Recently I went back of the same area that is now covered by small trees and no sign of any orchids or the small wallum plants I remember. I think it probably needs a fire to open it up again and perhaps the small plants will re-emerge. In the vicinity hrther down the road there are many Banksia aemula and B robtrr, wallum teatrees and Ricii~ocmposyi~~~jlolia. and these are often the target of bushfires, but I think where I found the duck orchids%ustbave escaped fire for a few years now." Making a note of flowering times also contributes to our greater knowledge of our wonderful plants. -

Secara morfologi Direvisi: 13 November 2019 Disetujui: 23 Maret 2020 D. discolor Tanimbar menunjukkan kesamaan dengan D. discolor Merauke dan D. bigibbum sehingga menyulitkan dalam identifikasi. DNA barcoding menggunakan penanda gen spesifik ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase Kata kunci: large (rbcL) dan Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) diharapkan dapat Dendrobium bigibbum; digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi D. discolor secara akurat. Penelitian ini Dendrobium discolor bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi sekuen DNA yang berpotensi sebagai Merauke; bioinformatik; barcode untuk identifikasi anggrek obat D. discolor Tanimbar identifikasi molekuler menggunakan penanda molekuler rbcL dan ITS. DNA genom D. discolor Tanimbar diisolasi dan digunakan sebagai template dalam reaksi PCR. Amplikon yang dihasilkan kemudian diurutkan (sequensing). Hasil Keywords: penelitian menunjukkan urutan gen rbcL dari D. discolor memiliki Dendrobium bigibbum; Dendrobium discolor homologi tinggi dengan D. salaccense (Accession: LC193510.1, Prect. Merauke; bioinformatics; Ident: 99,45 %), sedangkan ITS memiliki homologi tinggi dengan D. nindii molecular identification (Accession: AY239985.1, Prect. Ident: 98,67 %). Analisis bioinformatika menunjukkan bahwa urutan gen rbcL dari D. discolor memiliki urutan homologi yang lebih tinggi daripada ITS.
