Anti-Malarial Policy in the Madras Presidency: an Overview of the Early Decades of the Twentieth Century

VEERARAGHAVAN * The history of health care in colonial India was for long a neglected field of study. However, in recent years interest in the history of medicine and its role during the period of British rule has been growing, as is evident from the increasing number of studies published.' While some attempts have been made to draw the broad outlines of the development ofhealth policy at both an all-India level2 and at regional levels,3 the policies on specific diseases have received far less attention.4 This is particularly true of malaria. There is as yet no detailed history ofanti-malarial measures in colonial India.5 Our desire to fill this gap in the existing literature on the history of health care is the basic motive for this paper, which attempts to trace the various anti-malarial steps taken by the government of Madras during the early decades of the twentieth century. We begin with a brief background to the nature of health care policy in the Madras Presidency and a summary ofthe debate on the nature ofanti-malarial measures taken in the years following the discovery of the anopheles mosquito. Short+Sweet's vision statement is: a more creative world ten minutes at a time. The flagship festival is Short+Sweet Theatre Sydney, the largest ten-minute play festival in the world. Short+Sweet Theatre was founded at the Newtown Theatre in Sydney, Australia in January 2002 by Mark Cleary, beginning with the first ever Short+Sweet Theatre festival. Festivals are now held across the globe. Short+Sweet Theatre Sydney is now the largest ten-minute theatre festival in the world, with around 180 new plays being produced every season. There are many unique elements to this festival, some of which are, a strict time-limit, limit of one play per playwright, one play per director and two plays per actor, people's choice voting and the competitive aspect of the festival where plays are chosen from each week to progress to the Gala Finals. Short+Sweet South India started as Short+Sweet Chennai in 2011. Since 2014, the festival has opened to entries from the four southern states in India. The jury members for the weeks are not known to the public, and consist of a good mix of connoisseurs from diverse fields. The festival is presented in association with Blu Lotus Foundation and Alliance Francaise of Madras. Currently, Meera Krishnan, senior programme coordinator at Prakriti Foundation, is the Festival Director. -

Discourses of Merit and Agrarian Morality in Telugu Popular Cinema
Communication, Culture & Critique ISSN 1753-9129 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Looking Back at the Land: Discourses of Agrarian Morality in Telugu Popular Cinema and Information Technology Labor Padma Chirumamilla School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA This article takes Anand Pandian’s notion of “agrarian civility” as a lens through which we can begin to understand the discourses of morality, merit, and exclusivity that color both popular Telugu film and Telugu IT workers’ understanding of their technologically enabled work. Popular Telugu film binds visual qualities of the landscape and depictions of heroic technological proficiency to protagonists’ internal dispositions and moralities. I examine the portrayal of the landscape and of technology in two Telugu films: Dhee … kotti chudu,and Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, in order to more clearly discern the nature of this agrarian civility and—more importantly for thinking about Telugu IT workers— to make explicit its attribution of morality to “merit” and to technological proficiency. The rival’s boss confronts him unexpectedly on the deserted road, quickly and seemingly instantaneously surrounding him with his own men and vehicles, before killing him in retaliation. The film then quickly moves on to its main character, a rather comedic scam artist, and its main spaces, in the city of Hyderabad.1 This particular stretch of barren landscape—scene to the violence that underlies a significant revenge plot woven into the film’s story—is not returned to. -

After many years unemployment became a very rare condition because 9 out of 10 or stagnation, because of the well-constructed and executed people were employed and the education level has been drastically infrastructure of the area and also there was uninterrupted improved in the past 20 years. in Tamil cinema north madras and electricity, water & milk facility. this area is also home to one north madras peoples are portrayed in darker way like gangster, of the cities oldest railway stations. as the Chennai city uneducated, drug dealer. thus the film ends up to the audience that continues to expand its boundaries north madras continues to and makes them believe and assume that north madras it is the the place where the city began. same way shown in the film. the researcher in this study aims to find what is the audience impact on the films. -

These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses.
