A Norwegian Football League Perspective Åse Jacobsen *, Morten Kringstad and Tor-Eirik Olsen NTNU Business School, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7491 Trondheim, Norway; [email protected] (M.K.); [email protected] (T.-E.O.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Financial distress has been frequently addressed in the sports business and management literature; however, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to implications for financial viability derived from funding beyond what the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) defines as relevant income in football, henceforth referred to as extraordinary funding. This study critically discusses and reflects upon whether extraordinary funding can contribute to financial viability. To address this issue, we draw on approximately 100 financial statements for Norwegian top division clubs and their cooperating companies for three fiscal years. Results indicate that, although extraor- dinary funding contributes with sorely needed funds, thus from the outset contributing in making clubs more robust, the manner in which extraordinary funding occurs is still of great importance from a viability perspective. In this respect, it is useful to distinguish clearly between ex ante and ex post funding. While ex post funding can be argued to be counter-productive to financial viability Citation: Jacobsen, Å.; Kringstad, M.; Olsen, T.-E. • The Impact of National Policy on European Football Clubs: an Examination of Transfer
The impact of national policy on European football clubs: An examination of transfer activity In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Global Business by ZHANG Yaoning 1025992 May, 2020 ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to explore the impact of national policy on European football clubs. In recent years, European football clubs have been breaking the transfer fees record in the transfer market, but there is a big gap in the transfer fees between clubs from different countries, so this paper explored it. Since the response of national policies in one industry is usually the epitome of the economic situation of the whole country, this paper also found the advantages and disadvantages of national policies by studying the impact of national policies on the football industry. This study used literature review and reorganized the secondary data from Deloitte, the Transfer market, Statista and other websites. This study found that in the new liberalism Britain, the football industry environment is loose, the business model is dominated by large investment, the degree of marketization is high but the economic situation is not stable. In a macro- control country like Germany, the business model is within its means, and the financial situation is relatively healthy and stable, but to some extent, it restricts the development. Italy's football clubs are mainly owned by the family business, which is in the state of monopoly of league matches by big clubs, and it caused the Matthew effect. It is important to those businessmen who want to enter the European market because this study takes the football industry as the entry point and can reflect the impact of different national policies on the industrial business model.

  • Andreff Youth Sport Ljubljana
Second GDRI-DREEM International Conference Innovation and Economic Development in the Mediterranean Countries, Cairo, December 13-14, 2010 “MUSCLE DRAIN” IN SPORT AND HOW REGULATE IT? A plea for a “Coubertobin tax” Wladimir Andreff 1 In December 2009, a French newspaper, Le Monde2 was reporting the very sad story of Yannick Abega, a teenage (below 18) football player originating from Cameroon who was just sacked by Almeria football club (Spain) where he was playing without having signed any labour contract. In fact, Abega had never signed a contract since his first transfer from Cameroon to Real Majorque in 2006, at the age of 13. Thus, the Foot Solidaire association has lodged a complaint to FIFA contending “child trafficking, child ill-treatment, exploitation, and swindling Abega‟s parents”. This story draws attention on to a typical phenomenon in today‟s high level sport which is an overall athlete (player) international mobility on the one hand and, on the other hand, a specific segment of the global market for sporting talent, that is teenage and child international transfers. The problem is that in various sports transferring children and teenagers from outside Europe (basically from developing countries - DCs) is not allowed, like in football since the 2001 FIFA rules. Then a next issue comes up: how regulate international teenage player transfers in a way that could be more efficient than FIFA rules. Such issue is tackled in this paper. First, we describe the overall picture of the global market for international player transfers (1). Then we differentiate North-North international player mobility across developed countries (2) and South North international mobility of player transfers from developing to developed countries (3).

Tribunal Arbitral du Sport Court of Arbitration for Sport Arbitration CAS 98/200 AEK Athens and SK Slavia Prague / Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), award of 20 August 1999 Panel: Mr. Massimo Coccia (Italy), President; Dr. Christoph Vedder (Germany); Dr. Dirk-Reiner Martens (Germany) Football Conflicts of interest related to multi-club ownership within the same competition Application of EC law to sport Status of UEFA according to EC law Right to be heard Principle of procedural fairness 1. If clubs with the same owner can take part in the same competitions, whether national or international, doubts may arise as to whether the outcome is really undecided in advance. The challenged UEFA Rule is therefore an essential feature for the organization of a professional football competition and is not more extensive than necessary to serve the fundamental goal of preventing conflicts of interest which would be publicly perceived as affecting the authenticity, and then the uncertainty, of results in UEFA competitions. 2. Membership of UEFA is open only to national football associations situated on the continent of Europe who are responsible for the organization and implementation of football-related matters in their particular territory. The UEFA Statutes attribute voting rights only to national federations, and article 75 of the Swiss Civil Code (CC) refers to members which have voting rights within the association whose resolution is challenged. Clubs do not meet these requirements. 3. Under Article 75 CC, members of an association have the right to be heard when resolutions are passed which affect them to a significant extent.

Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Sports www.iiste.org ISSN (Paper) 2312-5187 ISSN (Online) 2312-5179 An International Peer-reviewed Journal Vol.18, 2016 Is English Football Facing a Financial Crisis, or are We Only Missing Better Regulation? Bojan Georgievski College of Business Administration, American University of Middle East, Block 3, Building 1, Egaila, Kuwait Slavica Zeger PhD Candidate Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb, Croatia Abstract Experts have increasingly been proclaiming that it is only a matter of time when the Premier League will face a severe financial crisis. Large contracts, higher transfer fees and continuous decrease in profits are some of the facts that are undermining the financial success of English Football clubs. Such premises place the economics of football above the socio-cultural aspects of die-hard supporter. This will result in increased TV interest and revenue will rise in coming years. Income trajectories show football profits are deteriorating from season to season despite club revenue increases. Keywords: Football, English Premier League, Financial Crisis, Glasgow Rangers FC, Portsmouth FC 1. Introduction The English Premier League characterizes a typical representation of the process of globalization. In 1997 FC Fulham was bought for £30 million by Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed (Kelly, Lewis & Mortimer, 2012) to become the first Premier League football club that had foreign ownership. According to Shergold (2012) the current year alone sawa total of 334 players originated from 71 different countries. Moreover, ownership of Premier League clubs is divided among American, Russian, Egyptian, Malaysian and Qatari billionaires (besides English ownership, there was Indian ownership in Blackburn and Hong Kong in Birmingham).
