  • Other Grease Pencils and Markers
OTHER GREASE PENCILS AND MARKERS After writing an online essay about Listo mechanical grease pencils (aka china markers, crayon pencils, etc.), I took an inventory of all the other brands of “markers” that had stuck to my hands over the years. I found two dozen! When I stroll the outdoor and indoor antiques and collectibles markets in this area, I pick up anything that looks like fun and is in my price range, i.e. cheap - - Frank Dubiel (RIP) and I had a lot in common. (Also, if you’ve read my other essays, you know I am first and foremost an Autopoint, Realite and Realpoint collector.) So I’m going to show you a sort of “parade” of markers which 1)vary between mechanical instruments and simple “clamp the lead” devices, 2)use a wide variety of diameters of grease or crayon type leads, and 3)are made from various materials like wood, plastic, and metal. I’ll lead off with Autopoint’s sole offering first, then retreat to what I suspect is the oldest marker in my collection, and work toward the most modern of the markers that I found. A WORD ABOUT MARKERS AND LEAD REFILLS SIZES: Autopoint, Listo and many other manufacturers made “checking pencils” along with their production of “normal” mechanical pencils, especially in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Autopoint probably made a hundred different styles of “regular” mechanical pencils, but it also made a wide variety of “checking” pencils over those years. Most of Autopoint’s early mechanical pencils either used .046” diameter (“standard”) or .036” diameter (“real thin”) leads, but its “checking” leads were .076” in diameter (or ~1.93mm).

  • Westchester County and New Rochelle Background
    5. BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND EXISTING CONDITIONS New Rochelle’s location on Westchester’s Long Island Sound shore places it within one of the state’s wealthiest counties. According to 1995 estimates from the United States Census Bureau, Westchester has New York’s fourth- highest median income, at $53,043. Only Putnam, Nassau, and Rockland, also New York City suburbs, and all much smaller in size than Westchester’s 443 square miles, has a greater median income. 5.1.1 WESTCHESTER COUNTY: HISTORY As shown in the map at left, Westchester County borders, on its south, the New York City borough of the Bronx. According to historian Frank E. Sanchis, this location at New York City’s doorstep has “always put it in the center of activity relative to the balance of the nation.” Indeed, Westchester’s development has historically been fueled by its proximity to what has been, since 1820, America’s largest city. Before the days of railroads or highways, Westchester had the trade routes of the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. In the 18th century, the primitive post roads to Albany and Boston were cut through Westchester’s rolling, wooded hills. When New York City’s population boomed after the 1825 completion of the Erie Canal, Westchester furnished many of the city’s raw and finished goods. Iron foundries were located throughout the county, and Westchester’s numerous brickyards and marble quarries provided the materials for the thousands of row houses and monumental new institutional buildings spreading across Manhattan. When Newgate Prison in Greenwich Village was no longer adequate, it was replaced in 1828 by Sing Sing, “up the river” in Westchester County.

  • The Vauban Circular Walk the Vauban Circular Walk
The Vauban Circular Walk The Vauban Circular Walk The Vauban circuit takes visitors through the historic parts of the city of Luxembourg to the points of strategic importance in one of Europe’s most impressive fortresses, through old city gates and dark casemates, across large fortified bridges to caponiers and a series of bastions. The circuit bears the name of the famous French military engineer, active during the reign of Louis XIV, Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707). Appointed commissioner for fortifications at the age of just twenty-two, Vauban built or enlarged more than 160 fortresses in total. When he arrived in Luxembourg with the French enemy troops, the Spanish held sovereignty over the fortified city, which from the Middle Ages onward had been ruled by a number of foreign powers in turn. Highly experienced in warfare, Vauban was entrusted with the technical control of the siege of Luxembourg by the French in 1684. After the capture of the fortified city, he oversaw the reconstruction work on the fortress, turning it into the “Gibraltar of the North”, one of Europe's mightiest fortresses of the age. Even though the fortress was almost totally demolished (starting in 1867), the reconstruction work and the addition of forts, redoubts and barracks built by Vauban between 1685 and 1688 with the help of 3,000 labourers, earned the city View over the old town the prestige it still enjoys today. In 1994, sections of the forti- fications and the Old Town were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following the traces of Vauban (General Commissioner for Fortifications), you will discover sites that bear witness to Luxembourg’s military past, experience the medieval charm of the old Lower Town of Pfaffenthal and, from the fortified heights, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
