Abstract Agents of Change: Enlightened, HBO and the Crisis of Brand Identity in the Post- Network Era Collins David Swords, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2014 Supervisor: Caroline Frick As a result of changing cultural, economic and technological factors, television always exists in a perpetual state of transformation. The fragmentation of the mass audience and the disintegration of the network oligarchy catalyzed the emergence of a multi-channel universe and niche cable markets in the post-network era. HBO, perhaps the most successful premium cable channel to emerge during the changing TV landscape, implemented a subscription-service economic model, enabling it to produce uncensored, commercial free content unavailable on broadcast television. HBO has since been labeled as the leading purveyors of quality, auteurist-centered TV. For this report, I analyze how HBO has been constructed in the realm of academic discourse.

JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. “I love the studio system. I would like to have been Vincente Minnelli or Howard Hawks making a film or two a year in the studio system, but you know, that had its downside. I think you had to sublimate your own ego on the surface. Secretly you’re making your film, but at least on the surface you had to show that you’re being a company man. At least talk the talk. And it’s a lot of hard work. When I do a studio film I’m not slumming. I work just as hard on that to make it be as good as it possibly can and push everyone around me to work well.” –Richard Linklater “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll.” –AC/DC Rock ‘n’ roll elementary school’s in session in SCHOOL OF ROCK, the 2003 Richard Linklater-directed comedy starring Jack Black as a dubiously- credentialed substitute giving fourth-graders lessons in teamwork, self-expression, and stickin’ it to the man. The Paramount hit has been called “uncut bliss” (David Edelstein), “hip and consistently hilarious” (Lou Lumenick), “exuberant, raucous, and thoroughly endearing” (Ann Hornaday), and “the cinematic equivalent of a near-perfect three-minute pop song” (Mark Caro).

Druid Hills, Southwest DeKalb, Tucker and Avondale helped DeKalb County make the jump to the current 11 -man version of football in 1950, with Stone Mountain, Lithonia, Clarkston and Chamblee also in the field. Legendary DeKalb County multi -sport coach and Athletic Director Elmer Morrow de- veloped the first powerhouse at Druid Hills, guiding the Red Devils to a runner -up state finish to Valdosta and 11 -1-1 record in 1956. Such other coaching giants as Avondale’s Calvin Ramsey and Tucker’s Terry Hodges lifted DeKalb County’s state -wide status to even greater heights toward the end of the 1950s and for most of the 1960s. Avondale ranked among the powerhouse programs in the state from the mid -1950s through most of the 1980s. The Blue Devils gained state and national fame during a 13 -year stretch from 1958 -70, winning a pair of state championships and posting a 129 -12 -3 record while never losing more than one game in any of those seasons.
