Whether working for Christchurch or for Forest Green, it is probably her persistence in getting the Arkle Centre built which will be her legacy. Fifteen years ago when the secondary school closed, Margaret said, “We now need a community centre - how do we get one?” As they say - the rest is history. Recently a special tea party was held in the Arkle Centre in honour of Margaret post her BEM announcement, and the main hall was packed with friends from the community, her knitting circle, Christchurch and members of the Council who dealt with all the ‘political’ matters over the building of the Centre. The Council Ithen said: The Stroud district would be subject to an order requiring owners to clean up after their dogs in all areas open to the air, to which the public have a right of access, in accordance with the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, that are not subject to any exemption under that Act. The Council is of the opinion that there are no areas to which the public has a right of access where it would be acceptable to allow a dog to foul and not clean it up. Any individual witnessed not picking up after their dog would be subject to enforcement action. It is interesting to review progress after six months. The District Council made budgetary provision for signage, for increased [dog warden] enforcement. Separately the Town Council met with the National Trust to urge the provision of additional dog bins, particularly on Minchinhampton Common. To the best of my knowledge, and I walk my dogs on Minchinhampton Common daily, almost nothing has changed there. There are no signs; there are no new dog bins and I have yet to see a dog warden (though I’m told such have been sighted). I say ‘almost nothing’ because I think there is a detectable increase in the number of plastic bags left on the ground or hung up on bushes, signs, etc. There is certainly no obvious reduction in the number of dog pooh deposits nestling amongst the cow pats. An unfortunate metaphor perhaps, but has SDC, with its ‘no areas to which the public has right of access’ bitten off more than it can chew? Number 28 offers a good menu and great prices. Though I have yet to go there in the evening I have seen it open later than most traditional cafes which for me - being under eighteen - is a real benefit. It’s difficult for youth in Nailsworth to find places where they’re welcome in the evenings and therefore it is really nice to have a place to go where you’re not being frowned upon. The service is friendly and the overall vibe is warm. The Canteen has quirky decor and a nice selection of cakes and drinks. Its large, outside space makes it a perfect, peaceful retreat away from the busy centre of Nailsworth and also gives us an opportunity to catch some rare rays of sun! Tea shops are the central hub to much of Nailsworth’s youth and Number 28 and The Canteen are just two of many cafes that Nailsworth has to offer. I really value the choice that we have here. The Emmaus shop at Nailsworth was started in 1993 by Rosemary Liles from Bussage who ran a Fairtrade shop in Nailsworth. She with Jonathan and Iain MacKechnie Jarvis started an Emmaus group who met at the Quakers house in Nailsworth. The shop has been a great success and attracts customers and visitors from far and wide to Nailsworth – from all backgrounds including the local Royals. It is unique – it is quirky, it is an Aladdin’s Cave. It is a place where people are made to feel welcome. It is more than a shop to the people of Charity Chatter Nailsworth who like to drop in to talk - all are welcome. opefully you will have noticed and liked It is more than a shop….as it is part of the Emmaus Hthe bright new façade of the RSCPCA Gloucestershire Community which provides a home and a job charity shop at the foot of Market Street. for 23 formerly homeless people ... working here at Nailsworth and at three Long overdue for a facelift, the works other shops in Gloucestershire. A light bulb flickered in our mind, regarding the previous location of the RSPCA shop in the town. Wrongly choosing to disregard the flickering bulb, we proceeded on our way thinking ‘what a coincidence – maybe Mother Goose is sprucing up for Market Day’. Turning the corner, we arrived at a notably scaffolding-free RSPCA shop. The light bulb flickered some more, and then – FLASH – fully illuminated! We leave you to guess the rest of the story and in so doing, thank Steffi at Mother Goose for her cool head amidst all the surprise scaffolding. Chocs and Sweets Galore . . . Monica Fowler and Julie Fream are the new owners of CoCo, our stunning sweet shop in Fountain Street and they are already firmly settled in their new roles. Their philosophy is simple - why change a winning formula? But, they are tweaking things here and there and evolving with the times - new sweets and chocolates are always appearing, but the main thrust is still the classic ‘old fashioned ones’. A popular new move is hiring their ‘Sweet Carts’ for weddings and children’s parties etc. It is well worth exploring this one .... filling a cart full of your favourite sweets for that special occasion! As normal, there are the traditional party bags, wedding favours, a new sweet tree and gift vouchers. A web site is almost ready for online shopping, but call in anyway and ask for details of how Monica and Julie can help you. And if for nothing else, just call in and look at all those jars of ‘I remember those ...!’ You won’t be able to resist the temptation! 01453 833002

Nigglesworth local reader has made the following observation from Aher most recent local shopping trip. Have you noticed how supermarkets have recently started making the cardboard centre of their loo rolls a lot narrower on diameter? If you have a slightly broad loo roll holder, or one with a fixed end and you’ve just bought a mega-pack of shop’s own loo rolls, you then find you can’t get the roll on to the loo roll holder and have to find somewhere else to prop it up, while the intended holder becomes a useless decoration. Very frustrating!
