Conference Program Kalamazoo College June 14–16, 2011 [ Welcome ] elcome to Kalamazoo College and the twenty-third annual Wconference of the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges. We are delighted to host this annual opportunity for engaged conversation, discussion, learning, and fellowship. Kalamazoo, Michigan, is earning growing recognition as an education community. We are home to the “Kalamazoo Promise,” which provides all city public high school graduates up to 100 percent of tuition at any of Michigan’s public colleges, universities, or community colleges. Last June, Kalamazoo Central High School won the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge, and President Barack Obama delivered the school’s commencement address. And of course, Kalamazoo is home to three great institutions of higher education: Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Kalamazoo College, founded in 1833, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the State of Michigan, and among the 100 oldest institutions in the country. For more than forty years, it has offered a nationally- recognized curriculum called the “K” Plan, an undergraduate experience of rigorous liberal arts scholarship combined with a strong focus on experiential education. • More than two thirds of students complete an internship or externship • More than 85 percent of students participate in a meaningful, extended, immersive international and intercultural experience abroad LCOME • Over half of students participate in service-learning projects • All students engage in a Senior Individualized Project – a e research or creative project done in the senior year. “K” students have demonstrated outstanding performance on the Collegiate Learning Assessment, the best current measure of student W outcomes in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and writing. We do more in four years so that students can do more in a lifetime. Our conference theme: It’s a Zoo Out There!, refers to the challenges of an ever-changing and unpredictable IT landscape. Choice enhances freedom, and enables people to get exactly what they want. This is a perfectly reasonable assumption. Reasonable, but false. Paradox Number One is that when people have too much choice, they become paralyzed rather than liberated, they make bad decisions, and they are dissatisfied even when they make good decisions.

PHONE: 734.661.2350 FAX: 734.661.2349 www.glca.org January 17, 2019 Dear Writer/Publicist: I invite you to enter the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) New Writers Awards (NWA) 2020 competition for poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. In each category, the submitted work must be an author’s first published volume. For this year’s competition the GLCA will accept entries that bear a publication imprint of 2018 or 2019. Winning writers are announced in January 2020. For the 50th year this group of thirteen independent Midwestern colleges will confer recognition on a volume of writing in each of three literary genres: poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Publishers submit works on behalf of their authors; the key criterion for this award is that any work submitted must be an author’s first-published volume in the genre. All entries must be written in English and published in the United States or Canada. Judges of the New Writers Award are professors of literature and creative writing at GLCA member colleges. The winning authors tour several of GLCA’s member colleges from which they receive invitations, giving readings, lecturing, visiting classes, conducting workshops, and publicizing their books. Because of this provision of the award, all writers must live in the U.S. or Canada. Each writer receives an honorarium of at least $500 from each college visited, as well as travel expenses, hotel accommodations, and hospitality. By accepting the award the winner is committed to visit member colleges that extend invitations.

    KALAMAZOO COLLEGE CAMPUS SECURITY and FIRE SAFETY OCTOBER 1, 2019 ANNUAL REPORT Keeping Our Campus Safe and Secure This report includes statistics for the previous three years (2018, 2017, and 2016) concerning crimes that occurred on- campus and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This document is prepared for current and prospective students, their families and employees in compliance with the Jeanne Clery disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Kalamazoo College operates its own non-deputized campus safety program. Campus Safety personnel therefore have no arrest powers. Campus Safety personnel, under the direction of Tim Young, Director of Campus Safety, regularly patrol the campus 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Campus Safety will respond to all requests for service and attend to situations around the campus that affect the security of residents and visitors. The cooperation and involvement of students themselves in a campus safety program is absolutely necessary. Students must assume responsibility for their own personal safety and the security of their personal belongings by taking simple common sense precautions. For example, although the campus is well lighted, any student-male or female-may feel more comfortable using the College security escort service when returning to the residence halls late at night. Room doors should be locked at night and when the room is unoccupied. Strangers should never be allowed into residence halls. Students with cars must park them in their assigned area and keep vehicles locked at all times. Valuables should be locked in the trunk.

Japan Study will send invoices directly to your school if you belong to the GLCA/ACM group of schools. Japan Study will bill other students directly unless arrangements have been made with your home school. If you need further clarification, contact our office at 765-983-1224 or e-mail [email protected]. Please do not contact Waseda University about billing. Contact your International Programs office and your Financial Aid office to determine the total cost that will be billed to you by your home college. Some do add a study abroad fee or charge their home institution’s rate for tuition.
