Resources.....................................................................................95 INTRODUCTION Dear Youth Ministry Leaders, It may be hard to believe, but we are less than a year away from registration opening for the 2022 ELCA Youth Gathering! The Gathering seeks to be a place, an event where young people can encounter God in new ways and grow in their faith. We know through research, evaluations and conversations that youth who are part of a well prepared and well-led group have a fuller, deeper and all around better experience at the Gathering, and so a primary goal for Gathering leadership is to help you prepare and lead. Due to the rescheduling of the 2021 Gathering, this is the second go at a second edition of “The Official Gathering Handbook: Tips and Tricks for Adult Leaders.” While most of the content hasn’t changed from the 2021 version, dates, logos and resources have been updated. This book represents the collective wisdom of adult leaders from across our church. While this certainly isn’t an all-inclusive guide to the Gathering, we hope that every adult leader – newbie or veteran, volunteer or paid, rural, suburban or urban – can find helpful hints and resources. Our world has changed a lot since we last gathered in Houston. We have learned to do old things in new, creative and innovative ways. We will have to continue to do new things that will stretch and challenge us. Our young people have been formed by the world-altering events of the last year. While we aren’t sure exactly how the pandemic will impact the Gathering, MYLE and the tAble, please know that we are paying close attention to guidance and research from medical professionals and local, state and national officials and will align our plans and practices with their recommendations. Stay tuned to our website, social media and gNews for any further updates. A huge thank you to our original writing team, the 2022 Curriculum Team, the Gathering staff and all who contributed tidbits of wisdom. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives. An important part of the Gathering’s ministry are the two pre-events, the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE), a faith formation and leadership development event primarily for youth of color, and the tAble, an ELCA gathering of youth with disabilities. These are legitimate concerns that many groups will face when planning for the Gathering. Whether you are from an urban, suburban or rural area, the Gathering will present a unique set of challenges and opportunities for you and your young people. I signed in at Pease Air Force Base and settled in. We searched for a church and didn’t find any Lutheran churches for 55 miles: one in Peabody, Massachusetts, Concord, New Hampshire and Portland, Maine. We attended four churches and we didn’t get turned on. It was not friendly. They did not greet us or shake hands. We asked the Lord for help. We went to Portsmouth and we passed by the Baptist Church. I told Mama the we were going there Sunday. She said, “Dad? Not a Baptist Church!” and I said, “I bet they worship the same God we do”. She said, “Alright.” so we went. The friendliness was overwhelming. We couldn’t asked for a better sermon. We attended for months. Then I met a guy, Airmen Zeller, from Illinois. He said, “Where are you from? Down south?” I said, “I’m from Wisconsin. Are you Lutheran?” He said, “Yes, are you?” I said yes and I invited him to my home. We had supper and Mama’s cooking got him. We decided to write a letter to the Lutheran Synod for help. They sent a young fellow that was not ordained and he helped us to get organized and see how many people we could contact to start. He surveyed the off-base people and Airmen Zeller and I surveyed the on- base people from Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and a lot more.
