DETAILED FILM PROGRAM Monday, June 10, 2019, 9pm Opening Film Cao Fei, 'Prison Architect', 2018, 59', Vitamin Creative Space In 'Prison Architect', Cao Fei subtly deconstructs and brings together parallel realities, in order to call into question received societal notions of the relationship between freedom and the self. Two protagonists – a Chinese political prisoner in British colonial-era Hong Kong, and a modern-day architect struggling with her commission to design a new prison – gradually draw closer, creating a dialogue across space and time. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Hu Fang and Maxa Zoller. Tuesday, June 11, 2019, 7pm Paul Grivas, 'Film Catastrophe', 2018, 55' In 2010, 'Film Socialisme' by Godard explores the shipwreck of political ideals in Europe. In 2012, the Costa Concordia, which had served as an allegoric platform to Godard, sinks before the cameras of passengers and the entire world. In 2018, 'Film Catastrophe' by Paul Grivas, looks at images of the disaster to revisit the film factory. The screening, in collaboration with Centre National des Arts Plastiques, will be followed by a Q&A with Paul Grivas and Marian Masone. Tuesday, June 11, 2019, 9pm Rashid Johnson, 'Native Son', 2019, 110', Hauser & Wirth Based on the seminal novel by Richard Wright, 'Native Son' tells the story of Bigger Thomas, a young African American living in Chicago who is given an opportunity to work as a chauffeur for the affluent businessman Will Dalton. As Bigger enters this seductive new world of money and power – including a precarious relationship with Dalton’s beautiful, captivating daughter Mary – he will face unforeseen choices and perilous circumstances that will alter the course of his life forever. Wednesday, June 12, 2019, 9pm Short Film Program 'Collective Mythologies' When Harald Szeemann coined the term 'individual mythologies' in the 1960s, it was mainly in reference to the male-dominated conceptual art of the time. The 'Collective Mythologies' short film program focuses on how a handful of contemporary female artists envision mythologies: as a collective artistic ritual grounded in group dynamics, that transmits the knowledge of previous generations through the body. By animating single images using sound and narration, it is possible to create meditative and dreamlike cinematic experiences. Fiona Tan uses this form of storytelling in 'Ascent', a homage to the Japanese Mount Fuji. The film is no less colossal than the mountain, as it is composed of 4000 individual photographs taken over 150 years. With this monumental series of images, Tan evokes the culture of memory of one of the world’s most mystical destinations. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Fiona Tan and Maxa Zoller. Thursday, June 13, 2019, 9pm Prune Nourry, 'Serendipity', 2019, 74', Templon The French-born, New York–based artist has spent the majority of her artistic career creating work that deals with women’s bodies and female fertility. A recent breast cancer diagnosis led Nourry to create 'Serendipity' that began as a book project. It captures the subsequent evolution of her body, her work, her soul, and her mind. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Prune Nourry and Marian Masone. Friday, June 14, 2019, 7pm Short Film Program 'Destroy, he said' This short film program reflects the violence of our times on a playful, artistic level. In the films shown here, males encounter a silent adversary: sculpture. And the confrontation is (nearly) always fatal. This double program examines the theme of Marxism from two very different perspectives. Phil Collins pays tribute to Friedrich Engels, co-author of the Communist Manifesto, in the context of Brexit and the contemporary British working class, and 100 years after the Russian Revolution. Sven Johne, on the other hand, takes up a continental European position and proposes a completely new political future. Saturday, June 15, 2019, 8pm Jeffrey Perkins, 'George, The Story of George Maciunas and Fluxus', 123', 2018 'George - The Story of George Maciunas and Fluxus' is a documentary portrait of Lithuanian American artist, graphic designer, architect and impresario George Maciunas, who in 1961 established the avant-garde art movement Fluxus, an international association of artists working in varied disciplines. While Maciunas’s life events unfold, the film also engages debates not at all unfamiliar by artists working today; how do art and artists define relationships to political ideologies, capital exchange, communication technologies, globalism, collectivity and community? And how do these relationships function in a constant state of 'flux'? The discussion includes interviews with many notable artists connected to the Fluxus genesis, including Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Jonas Mekas and many others. About Maxa Zoller 2019 marks the fifth and final year Dr. Maxa Zoller curates the Film sector for Art Basel in Basel. Zoller was appointed Artistic Director of the Dortmund / Cologne International Women's Film Festival in 2018. She previously taught experimental film history and theory at the American University in Cairo, Goldsmiths College and Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. She has curated various experimental film screenings at Tate Modern, South London Gallery, no.w.here, the Munich Filmmuseum and the Centre of Contemporary Art in Geneva. A former lecturer at Goldsmiths College and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Zoller developed a keen interest in alternative pedagogical tools; she created the workshop series 'The Cinematic Body' for the artist-run space no.w.here in London, where she also led the first edition of the summer school in 2012. In her writings for MIT, IB Tauris, JRP-Ringier and Hatje Verlag she covered topics ranging from post- socialist identity discourse and feminism to her academic expertise – the history of Western avant-garde and experimental film. Her current research interests regard the relationship between textile theory and contemporary art. About Marian Masone Marian Masone is a film curator based in New York. For over 25 years Masone was the Associate Director of Programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, one of America’s preeminent film organizations where she sat on the selection committees for 'New Directors/New Films', produced with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and 'The New York Film Festival'. Among her consulting projects, she works with German Film Services to select and present a yearly program of German films in New York City and is a consulting producer for Jump Cut Creative in New York. Masone is on the film panel of the Princess Grace Foundation, awarding fellowships to young artists, and is a member of Women in Film’s preservation fund. She has been a guest lecturer and curator for leading institutions such as Parsons School of Design in New York and Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.     THIRTY YEARS OF BERENGO STUDIO, TEN YEARS OF GLASSTRESS This year has been one of celebration for Berengo Studio and Fondazione Berengo. Thirty years ago Adriano Berengo opened the studio and began his mission to bring glass to the world of contemporary art; ten years ago he founded Glasstress, an exhibition to further his vision. This double anniversary has allowed us to pause and appreciate the progress we’ve made in forging a new path for contemporary art and glass. For the past thirty years, Berengo Studio has worked with an incredible range of contemporary artists and creatives, establishing ties with a truly international art community. Since its inception as a collateral exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2009 Glasstress has showcased brilliant works of art in glass and continued to surprise the contemporary art world with its innovative and imaginative creations. Abstract This arts-based curriculum proposal was developed in response to a white paper entitled, Arts, Health and Well-Being Across the Military Continuum: White Paper and Framing a National Plan for Action, released in October of 2013. The military’s need for art is not a new concept, however — intentionality, timeliness and relevance were key to developing this curriculum that focuses predominantly on Military Resilience Training (MRT) or pre-deployment training. Preparing soldiers for war means preparing their families as well —therefore the “Art, Play and Recreation Unit” requires soldiers to work with their families in preparation for deployment through shared art experiences. Additionally, some curriculum units, such as the “Dark Theater Unit,” overlap with Veteran art programming and PTSD therapy activities. This enables the facilitator of MRT training to coordinate with veterans groups, while also providing civilians with a theatrical venue for understanding and supporting the returning soldiers’ experience(s). Emotional distancing from family and community compounds stressors in the reacclimatization process of a soldier’s homecoming. This curriculum calls for art exhibition, which can reconnect the soldier with his family, friends and community. Connectivity is just one area of whole- hearted living that will be addressed through this curriculum. Mindfulness, transitional fear, ambiguity within a war zone, development/maintenance of a growth mindset, archetypal influence and spiritual healing will be addressed as well. Arts activities readily convey evidence of transformational learning and introspective awareness. After the trauma of war, art therapists and healers working with soldiers/survivors have traditionally used diverse methods to generate reflective conversation, encourage healthy relationships and explore intra-personal understanding through a thematic art-making process.

    Press release PARIS PRUNE NOURRY SOLO SHOW TERRACOTTA DAUGHTERS 22 MAR – 10 MAY 2014 Prune Nourry, Terracotta Daughter, image © Zachary Bako « A contemporary Xian army » Following one year of working with Chinese craftsmen, and her exhibition this winter in Shanghai, Prune Nourry is exhibiting her most recent project Terracotta Daughters at Magda Danysz gallery in Paris from March 22nd to May 10th. Famous for a lot of performances & exhibitions in Asia, Europe and in the US, she showcases her engaged work, 108 clay sculptures representing young Chinese girls. A French multi-disciplinary artist working on sculptures, pictures & videos, from the beginning of her studies Prune Nourry has always shown an interest in sociology, ethics and bioethics. Her focus is particularly human beings & procreation. Her work aims at highlight the crucial problems of our society, as the implication of science in the child gender selection and the consequences of the techniques of procreation, which bring to an artificial evolution of the population. With Spermbar, she creates at Central Park a bar where the visitor drinks a cocktail composed from his own physical characteristics – for example, brown eyes correspond to nutty flavour. With her previous work Holy Daughters, Prune Nourry highlighted the selective abortions on female foetuses in India and raised the woman’s place in Indian society. Terracotta Daughters goes on the same process. Prune Nourry created 108 characters inspired by the characteristics of 8 orphan girls, from 10 to 13 years old, she met. Then she will plut this figures in a grave to recreate the famous Terracotta Army of the Emperor Qin, like an archaeological dig.

    Press release 28 June 2019 PRUNE NOURRY Catharsis 7 September – 19 October 2019 Opening : Saturday 7 September from 12.00 to 8.00 pm River Woman, 2019, borosilicate glass, 195 x 75 x 20 cm Following on from her success at Musée Guimet in 2017, Prune Nourry is taking possession of the Galerie Templon space on Rue Grenier Saint Lazare for the first time with Catharsis. Opening on 7th September, the solo show is made up of a series of new sculptures interacting with extracts from her first feature-length documentary, Serendipity. The Catharsis exhibition marks a turning point in the artist’s creative process. For over twelve years, Prune Nourry has been developing powerful and thoughtful multidisciplinary work, exploring the body by questioning gender and hybridisation. She has tended to keep her subject at a distance, remaining as objective as a researcher or anthropologist. Having recently overcome breast cancer, over the course of her treatment the artist felt she was becoming the subject of her own work, a sculpture in the hands of the doctors. With Catharsis, armed with her sculptor's tools, Prune Nourry reappropriates her body and her femininity, forging an intimate tie between her past explorations and her current life experience. The sculptures in the exhibition are all marked by their evocation of ex-votos, the popular offerings in the form of an object, limb or organ which represent the feelings of women and men confronted with fear, infertility and sickness, their gratitude for past cures and hopes for future cures. This concept of transferring an emotion to an object can be found in all ages and cultures.

Galerie Daniel Templon is delighted to present the first solo exhibition in Belgium by young French artist Prune Nourry. Contemporary Archeology sees Nourry transform the gallery space to recreate the experience of a contemporary archaeological site. This new proposition relates directly to Terracotta Daughters, her long-term project featuring an army of girls, inspired by the Xi’an terracotta warriors, which Nourry buried in 2015 at a secret site in mainland China. The 108 sculptures, homages to young girls never born, victims of gender selection, travelled the world during 2014, from Shanghai to Mexico City via Paris, Zurich and New York. They will remain buried until 2030, the year when the consequences of China’s one-child policy will peak, marking the moment when the country experiences the greatest gender imbalance ever seen. Visitors to the Brussels gallery are taken on an immersive journey inside a space transformed using earth and a variety of artistic materials. Inside they encounter the works — bronze and terracotta sculptures and photographs — as well as the stages in Nourry’s creative process, which have become works of art in themselves, in the form of film and an installation evoking the processes that go on behind the scenes at her studio.
