ASCAP to Honor New Edition at 21St Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Source: ASCAP May 29, 2008 08:00 ET ASCAP to Honor New Edition at 21st Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on June 23 in Los Angeles NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - May 29, 2008) - The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will honor New Edition at its 21st Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on June 23, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. The six members of New Edition will be presented with the prestigious ASCAP Golden Note Award, which is given to songwriters, composers, and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones. The invitation-only gala will also honor ASCAP's top songwriters and publishers of 2007. Previous ASCAP Golden Note Award honorees include Lionel Richie, Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jay-Z, Quincy Jones, LL Cool J and Steve Miller. Celebrating their 25th anniversary as a group, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill established much of the groundwork for the style of music known as new jack swing. In the early 1980s, New Edition sold more units in the United States than any other teen singing group and their success led to the creation of late-80s and 90s boy bands, such as New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. They have released seven studio albums -- "Candy Girl," "New Edition," "All For Love," "Under the Blue Moon," "Heart Break," "Home Again" and "One Love" -- that spawned several hits, including "Candy Girl," "Popcorn Love," "Cool It Now," "Mr. Telephone Man," "Count Me Out," "A Little Bit of Love (Is All It Takes)," "Earth Angel," "Can You Stand the Rain," "If It Isn't Love," "You're Not My Kind of Girl," "Crucial" and "Hit Me Off." Individually, they have enjoyed successful solo careers and side group projects. Commenting on the Golden Note Award honorees, ASCAP President and Chairman Marilyn Bergman said: "Over the last 25 years, New Edition has experienced success on multiple levels to become true legends. The group has firmly left their mark on today's music, and ASCAP is very proud to honor them." The 21st Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards celebration will also feature a special presentation of ASCAP's highly competitive and coveted Songwriter of the Year award to the songwriter with the most award-winning songs. Past recipients of this top honor include many of today's most celebrated talents, such as 50 Cent, Johntá Austin, Mary J. Blige, Kandi Burruss, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Dr. Dre, Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Alicia Keys and Timbaland. Special awards will also be presented to Publisher of the Year, Ringtone of the Year, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song, Top Rap Song and Top Gospel Song. The evening will feature performances by several award-winning songwriter/performers. I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

The reality star couple first met when filming the fourth season of Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2011. Buruss is a Grammy Award winner known for writing TLC’s hit “No Scrubs,” Destiny Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” and Pink’s “There You Go.” Her upcoming show, The Kandi Factory, follows her as she searches for the next big pop talent. She also has an 11-year-old daughter, Riley, from a previous relationship. How do you announce your engagement to your children? Cupid’s Advice: There’s a lot of pressure to make sure your relationship doesn’t affect your child. This priority can make sudden changes to your family seem more stressful then they should. Sit down with your child, have the discussion, and simultaneously create a healthier family unit. Here’s how: 1. Treat them with respect:When discussing your new engagement with your children, you have to give their feelings and questions the attention they deserve without dismissing any discussion. Make sure they understand how much you appreciate them as part of your life. Let them know this new arrangement doesn’t change your love for them. This is an addition to the family, not a subtraction. 2. Talk to them with your fiancé: A united front means making decisions as a parenting unit. If you’re getting married, it means that your partner will fill this role to some degree.

  • New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry
Start Me Up: New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry Master Thesis MSc Business Administration Management and Entrepreneurship in the Creative Industries Faculty of Economics and Business, Amsterdam Business School Myra Alice Wilhelmina Ruers - 11903929 Supervisor: Dr. M. Piazzai 21st of June 2018 Statement of Originality This document is written by Student Myra Ruers, who declares to take full responsibility for the contents of this document. I declare that the text and the work presented in this document is original and that no sources other than those mentioned in the text and its references have been used in creating it. The Faculty of Economics and Business is responsible solely for the supervision of completion of the work, not for the contents. 2 Abstract The music industry is extremely vibrant, diverse, and inherently uncertain. Record labels are the main intermediaries in this industry, facilitating the connection between the creative input from musicians and the demand from the consumers. Due to many technological advancements, the barriers to entry have decreased significantly, hence making it easier to enter this industry as a new record label. Additionally, strategic integration options allow existing firms to start new ventures by acquiring or initiating subsidiaries. This research focuses on the multiple modes through which new entry can be commenced. These entry modes all have their own characteristics and consequences for the configurations of the industry. The likelihood of entry, the subsequent performance of new record labels, and the effects on the diversity of the output are the main topics that are explored. In this study, databases storing longitudinal information on musical releases are used to compile a dataset with the necessary information on new record labels.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
