LL20 7TU T: 07810 878738 E: [email protected] Profile My passion in life is kayaking. This passion has taken me to over 30 countries across 6 continents, down rivers that have never been done before and earned me several International medals. These achievements have given me a reputation as one of the World’s top female white water and freestyle kayakers. The desire to help others to enjoy paddlesport and achieve their own goals has led me into professional coaching. I work at all levels of the sport - from beginners up to the long-term development of international athletes and mentoring of other coaches. The results and feedback from my coaching have been extremely positive, as my references will confirm. Achievements • European Freestyle Champion 2006-2008 • International First Descents: Mongolia, Russia, Georgia • Aberystwyth Sports Person of the Year 2008-2009 • 4 times British Freestyle Champion • 8 times GB Freestyle Team member Training & Qualifications • BCU Level 5 Inland Kayak • BCU 4 Star Leader Open Canoe - Trained • National Trainer for BCU Freestyle Awards • BCU Level 1 Raft Guide (Tryweryn and Durance) • BCU UKCC L1 and L2 Course Tutor • REC Level 2 Emergency First Aid (16 hours) • BCU 4 Star WW Provider • Rescue 3 SRT Level 1 • BCU WW Safety & Rescue Provider • Full, clean driving licence since 2002 • BCU 1, 2 & 3 Star WW Assessor • Experience of driving minibuses under MiDAS and with trailers (under 750kg) Education Aberystwyth University Masters Degree: Software Engineering MEng First Class Yale College, Wrexham A-levels: Maths, Computing & Geography ABB AS-levels: Physics & Sports Science AB Millthorpe School, York GCSEs including English, Maths & Science 7 A*s; 3 As Employment History FlowFree Owner and Head Coach 2008-present I run a very successful coaching company in North Wales, running courses and trips across the UK, Europe & further afield. Regular UK courses include Intro to Playboating, Confidence Boosters, Steep Creeking and the BCU WWSR & 4 Star Leader, although bespoke courses take the largest percentage. I offer female-specific coaching, which is very popular and extremely rewarding – it is fantastic to be able to inspire women of all ages. We run week-long courses as part of the Outdoor Education programmes for Plumpton College. Other responsibilities include managing freelance staff, mentoring, marketing, PR, accounting, planning, budgeting, pricing and much more. I understand the importance of being customer-focused and delivering a professional package from start to finish. Freelance Freelance Coach & Assessor 2008-present Alongside working for my own business, I freelance for other companies such as the BCU, PGL (staff trainer), Canoe Wales (including coach updates), Plas y Brenin, ProAdventure, OVAC and Tom Parker Coaching. Lowri Davies Curriculum Vitae Page 1 of 3 Patagonia Study Abroad (New River Academy) Coach Nov-Dec 2012 Patagonia Study Abroad is world leading programme for University aged students, allowing them to earn University credits for classes such as Spanish and Videography while developing their paddling in one of the World’s best white water locations: Chile. The students ranged from barely rolling grade 3 paddlers, up to the World’s best young chargers regularly running 70ft waterfalls. I was primarily coaching skills to the “development” students, whilst instilling safety, leadership and group awareness in the “chargers”. It was a demanding job with very differing student needs, but coaching on grade 4-4+ and running waterfalls every day for work was an amazing experience! Kayak the Nile Manager and Head Coach Jan-Feb 2011 I was solely responsible for everything relating to the business and was asked to put in place any changes I saw fit to improve the business. My day-to-day roles included managing a team of local staff and freelance guides, taking all bookings and liaising with other organisations to provide full holiday packages. As head coach I mentored and trained local coaches and ran sessions ranging from Intro to White Water up to guided grade 4+ river trips and advanced freestyle coaching for a full range of international clients. Canoe Wales Coach Education Co-ordinator 2009-2010 This part-time role involved educating coaches on the changes to the BCU coaching scheme and ensuring sufficient provision of coach education in Wales. The role also provided a link for coaches to the BCU / Canoe Wales policy makers, an often challenging position which required diplomacy. Gene17 Kayak Coach & River Guide Summer 2009 Gene17 are Europe’s leading adventure kayaking holiday provider and their staff are regarded as some of the best in the business. I coached on week-long courses in Slovenia and Norway. Canoe Wales Freestyle Development Officer 2008-2009 I organised and delivered a series of Freestyle Development days, which attracted paddlers with a wide range of ages and abilities. I also set-up the ‘North Wales Playboat Gatherings’, a cooperative series of get- togethers, created with the intention of returning the spirit of rodeo to North Wales. Canoe Control, French Alps Kayak Coach & River Guide Summer 2008 I was responsible for planning and implementing week-long coaching courses and guided holidays for a range of clientele while ensuring the highest quality of public relations and customer service. Other responsibilities included providing training and mentoring for less experienced members staff. Canolfan Tryweryn Freelance Raft Guide 2004-2008 Rafting at the Tryweryn is a fantastically fun job that requires great interpersonal skills to ensure clients have an enjoyable, safe and memorable experience. IBM, Hursley WebSphere MQ System Tester 2006-2007 JJ Canoeing & Rafting Freelance Raft Guide 2004-2005 PGL, Embrun Centre Multi-Activity Instructor & Raft Guide Summer 2003 Waddow Hall Head Activity Instructor Summer 2002 At this Girl Guide centre I was the main instructor, running mountain biking, kayaking, bouldering, grass sledging, orienteering and team building sessions. I was also responsible for the maintenance and organisation of all activity equipment. Other Relevant Experience Symposium Work I have worked on a number of symposiums including the Student Safety Seminar, CANI Paddlefest, Ladies Paddle Symposium, Dee River Festival and the UK River Rescue Symposium. I have led practical sessions and seminar discussions as well as presented the evening lecture. At UKRRS I was also part of the Q&A “expert panel” and at LPS I was an assisting event organiser. BCU Freestyle Technical Panel I am a member of the BCU Freestyle Technical Committee, which creates the syllabi for Freestyle BCU awards such as star tests and coaching modules. I am a key National Trainer providing orientations for coaches wishing to provide these awards. I undertook the role of Chair for over a year, which requires strong-will, organisation and delegation to ensure productive meetings, timely completion of actions and representation of our interests within the BCU. Lowri Davies Curriculum Vitae Page 2 of 3 Lectures & Talks I am experienced at giving talks and lectures on a range of subjects to very varied audiences. Recently I have enjoyed giving inspirational talks at Further Education Colleges around the UK about how dedication leads to achievement in sport and wider life. I’ve presented slide-shows from my expeditions and adventures, including headlining at CANI Paddlefest and Canoexpo, The Outdoor Show, Adventure Paddlers Weekend, the Cumbrian Lecture Tour, clubs and universities. I also presented in the High Sports Winter Lecture series alongside names such as Nicolas Favresse and Andy Kirkpatrick, with extremely positive feedback. Media I’ve written many published articles for magazines such as Canoe & Kayak UK, Paddles, Vertical Drop and Kayak Session – including a monthly feature in Paddles. I’ve featured on TV and radio, including starring on CBBC WILD as their celebrity guest in June 2013. Canoe Clubs My paddling began in a very active club in York, for whom I have to thank for my passion for the sport. I have always looked to give back to my sport through clubs. Throughout my 5 years at university, I was actively involved in the running of the club – including being President and Training Officer. I coached at pool and harbour sessions and ran club trips. My main aim as President was to turn a small, cliquey group into an inclusive and active club. AUCC is now the largest club to be affiliated with Canoe Wales. • Podolak Multifunctional Riverscapes
Multifunctional Riverscapes: Stream restoration, Capability Brown’s water features, and artificial whitewater By Kristen Nicole Podolak A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor G. Mathias Kondolf, Chair Professor Louise Mozingo Professor Vincent H. Resh Spring 2012 i Abstract Multifunctional Riverscapes by Kristen Nicole Podolak Doctor of Philosophy in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor G. Mathias Kondolf, Chair Society is investing in river restoration and urban river revitalization as a solution for sustainable development. Many of these river projects adopt a multifunctional planning and design approach that strives to meld ecological, aesthetic, and recreational functions. However our understanding of how to accomplish multifunctionality and how the different functions work together is incomplete. Numerous ecologically justified river restoration projects may actually be driven by aesthetic and recreational preferences that are largely unexamined. At the same time river projects originally designed for aesthetics or recreation are now attempting to integrate habitat and environmental considerations to make the rivers more sustainable. Through in-depth study of a variety of constructed river landscapes - including dense historical river bend designs, artificial whitewater, and urban stream restoration this dissertation analyzes how aesthetic, ecological, and recreational functions intersect and potentially conflict. To explore how aesthetic and biophysical processes work together in riverscapes, I explored the relationship between one ideal of beauty, an s-curve illustrated by William Hogarth in the 18th century and two sets of river designs: 18th century river designs in England and late 20th century river restoration designs in North America.
