This has been a great year for the Philip Bates Trust. We had a wonderful Touch of Basil concert last September, an enjoyable Games & Quiz evening in March, and Registered Charity No. 0194937 considered 35 applications for fund- ing, an increase from 23 the previous year. Come along to support us again on September 28th for an unbelievably varied evening of music at Birming- ham Conservatoire in a Touch of Basil 2013, raising money to help young people involved in the arts. It is a real thrill to know that The Junior Academy of Vocal Music will return then after a break of 8 years - who can forget how they entertained us back in 2005?! Games and Quiz Night 2013 The Philip Bates Trust Games and Quiz Night took place on Saturday 9th March 2013 at Arden Hall in Castle Bromwich. The evening included a general knowl- edge quiz round organised by Stan & Sue Gamble, pictionary on the subject of towns, a music quiz where Martin Bates played TV theme tunes back- wards, a ‘guess the faces’ and numbers round from Alan Spiers, Railway Riot, ‘Items in an Envelope Game’ organ- ised by Karen Moulton and the alpha- bet game. Jacket potatoes with various fillings, followed by cakes, were eagerly consumed at the refreshment break. Over £500 was raised for the Trust and great fun was had by all. Julie Larkin Last Year’s Touch Of Basil The evening of Saturday September in the ensemble. It was an interesting 22nd 2012 began with Ellen piece, although perhaps not quite Mellington-Pritchard, a school friend as sparkling as when performed of Philip’s, reading words from the at the composition prize final, as song “In my Life” by John Lennon.

JOHN’S, SMITH SQUARE, LONDON SW1 General Manager: Paul Davies St. John’s, Smith Square Charitable Trust registered charity no. 1045390 Registered in England Company No. 3028678 Handel’s Saul Jennens, Handel and Saul Saul was the first of four collaborations between Handel and Charles Jennens, a librettist who has been treated more severely by musical historians than he perhaps deserves. Most of Jennens’ contemporaries, friend and foe alike, thought him at times a pompous, over-bearing boor: “Solyman the Magnificent,” Dr Johnson called him. Some also recognized a balancing side. He could almost serve as prototype for the classic, educated English squire dilettante: wealthy (but not idly so); amply gifted and cultivated; sanguine; testy about criticism from which, in any event, his position generally shielded him; intellectually curious and culturally ambitious. Taken together, his collaborations with Handel in addition to Saul — Messiah, L’Allegro and Belshazzar — constitute a paradigm of the English oratorio at both beginning and summit. What Jennens had that appealed to Handel was a refined sense of dramatic principles, a knack for portraying complex characters with economy of means, the ability to synthesize material from various sources into a coherent narrative, and a gift on occasion for vivid imagery. Jennens had a poetic soul, if not always the poet’s tongue. Handel wrote Saul during the summer of 1738, consistent with his customary practice: composition during the warm months; copying, revising and rehearsing in the autumn; performances during the winter and spring.

  • The Ancona School in Kenwood Has Incorporated the Work of the Period Into Their Literature, History, and Political Science Courses
BY PEARL CLEAGE DIRECTED BY Resident Artist RON OJ PARSON 2016/17 Dear Court Theatre Family, Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky introduces audiences to characters who live during the Harlem Renaissance: an era of African American artistry and culture bracketed by the end of World War I and the Great Depression. During this period, Harlem was a magnet that attracted black writers, artists, musicians, and scholars who created a social and artistic explosion that we still feel today. Blues for an Alabama Sky captures the hopefulness of this period, when inspiration and discovery abound. It also captures a moment of extraordinary change for the African American community, how it was perceived, and its emerging leaders. The characters in the play discuss Langston Hughes’ adventures, follow the triumphs of Josephine Baker, attend services where Adam Clayton Powell preached, and support the efforts of Margaret Sanger to bring family planning to the community. Our decision to produce this play was propelled by Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson’s vision for bringing it to life on our stage. As we grew to know this play, it inspired us to build a community-wide investigation and exploration of this historic era: a Harlem Renaissance Celebration. Our instinct is to always search for works that might provide a broader platform for engagement with the University, neighboring schools, and our Hyde Park community. The University of Chicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture (CSRPC) has been extremely supportive of our previous productions of Invisible Man and Native Son. CSRPC faculty members Michael Dawson and Ken Warren embraced the idea of a Harlem Renaissance Celebration, and both are teaching classes this winter quarter focused on the period.

Box 8347, Main Terminal, Ottawa, Ontario K1G 3H8 C.P. 8347, Succursale principale, Ottawa, (Ontario) K1G 3H8 Sandra Stringer Wins Brian Law Scholarship by Tom McCool he concert was promoted as the "best bargain in town" and that turned out to be an understate- ment. The three previous Brian Law Competition Trecitals were enthusiastically received by near capac- ity audiences and this most recent one proved to be no exception. Holding the competition in January is always a somewhat risky proposition given the uncer- tain nature of winter weather in Ottawa but the weather did not deter the people from coming. A problem of another kind, however, threatened the success of the concert. One of three finalists, Alex Fleuriau Chateau, unexpectedly withdrew thus creating a situation in which there would be only two singers competing for the scholarship. A competition with only two competi- tors may not have been the "best bargain in town" es- pecially since all the promotional material had prom- ised three singers. Fortunately, former 1997 Brian Law winner, Julie Nesrallah, agreed to fill in as a guest. Her inspired performance won a spontaneous standing ovation and everything worked out in the end. In fact, Julie's appearance may have initiated a tradition for future competition concerts. The two finalists were Ottawa native, Sandra Singer, and Opera Lyra Associate Artistl, Corianne Bell. Both were excellent! Corianne, a mezzo-soprano, sang selections from Barber, Mozart and Thomas and Sandra, a soprano, chose pieces by Purcell, Mozart and Massenet.
