There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. This atlas contains tetrad maps of all of the species recorded in our area based on records held on the EcoRecord database. The records cover the period up to the end of 2019. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible. -

Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 57 Autumn 2014 ISSN 1358-5029 This newsletter gives notice of next year's hoverfly symposium, the 8th in the series that began in Stuttgart in July 2001. Although we have always tried to include a review of previous Syrphidae symposia, I was unable to attend the 7th Symposium in Novosibirsk last year and have yet to find an attendee who is able to provide one. If any reader who went to Novosibirsk is willing to offer an appropriate review for inclusion in a newsletter it would be very welcome. The recording scheme update below expresses concern that we may be witnessing a decline not only of hoverflies but perhaps of insects in general, something that has also been worrying the county invertebrate group to which I belong. I spent two hours in late July at a promising site in the Cotswolds, in apparently ideal conditions, and insects there were very sparse (only four hoverfly species seen, mostly single examples); the only exception was in beds of lavender where bumblebees were abundant, but with the cuckoo species outnumbering the others by about four to one. Roger Morris's piece on recording from photographs mentions the pea green halteres of some Melanostoma (the subject of a note in Hoverfly Newsletter No.28, August 1999). This is an example of a colour character that fades after death, as are the coral-red sternites of live female Baccha elongata (Bernard Verdcourt wrote of this in Hoverfly Newsletter No. 25, February 1998). The growth in photography of insects will probably increase awareness of such instances of colour features of hoverflies that have in the past gone unnoticed because they are no longer apparent in dead specimens. -

Kushigata, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. One hundred and fifty-one plant species of 41 families flowered sequentially from late May to mid September. A total of 2127 individuals of 370 species in eight orders of Insecta were collected. The most abundant order was Hymenoptera (35% of individuals) and followed by Diptera (33%), Coleoptera (28%) and Lepidoptera (4%). The number of species was highest in Diptera (47%) and followed by Hymenoptera (24% ), Coleoptera (18%) and Lepidoptera (9% ). The numbers of both spe cies and individuals peaked in late July and early August. Bee fauna was composed of six families, nine genera and 34 species, lacking Xylocopinae and wild Apinae. The most abundant genus in bees was Bombus (76.7% of individuals) and followed by Lasioglossum (20.2%). -

The purpose of the surveys was to document species of bee (Apoidea) and flower fly (Syrphidae) with affinities to the Atlantic Coastal Plain, representing disjunct populations, and species previously unknown in Nova Scotia and Canada. Surveys were conducted at a variety of sites in a variety of habitats, including Corema barren, granite barren, salt marsh, mixed woods, lakeshore meadow, and treed fen in the spring and summer of 2013 and 2014. Although no pollinator species with Atlantic Coastal Plain distributions were discovered in the study, 96 flower fly species were collected, including 7 species not previously collected in the Maritimes, and 11 others not previously collected in Nova Scotia. Most of the bee specimens collected have not been identified to species, but of the 42 species determined so far two have not been reported previously from Nova Scotia. The species records recorded during these surveys will help immensely with the assignment and refinement of conservation statuses to the bees and flower flies in Nova Scotia. This is particularly true for flower flies, where most of the species collected were previously known from too few records to assign meaningful ranks. Pollinators visiting three rare Atlantic Coastal Plain plant species (Redroot, Rose Coreopsis, and Plymouth Gentian) were documented. -

They are usually thought to be rather opportunistic flower visitors, although previous studied demonstrated that they show colour pref- erences and their nectar feeding is affected by morphological constraints related to flower morphology. Despite the growing appreciation of hoverflies and other non-bee insects as pollinators, there is a lack of community-wide studies of flower visitation by syrphids. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of flower visitation patterns in a species rich community of syrphids in a Central European grassland and to evaluate how species traits shape the structure of the plant-hoverfly flower visitation network. We found that different species varied in the level of specialisation, and while some species visited a similar spectre of flowers, others partitioned resources more strongly. There was a consistent difference in both specialisation and flower preferences between three syrphid subfamilies. Eristalinae and Pipizinae were more specialised than Syrphinae. Trait-based analyses showed that relative flower visitation (i) increased with plant height, but most strongly in Eristalinae; (ii) increased with inflorescence size in small species from all three subfamilies, but was independent of inflorescence size in large species of Eristalinae and Syrphinae; and (iii) depended on flower colour, but in a subfamily-specific way. -

Further insight 12 into the temporal relationships of pollinators and their flowering partners is required to 13 inform conservation efforts. Here we examined the phenology of: (i) pollinator flight; (ii) 14 insect-pollinated plant flowering; and (iii) extinct and endangered pollinator and plant species 15 in Great Britian. Over 1 million records, spanning four centuries, were collated from the 16 historical databases of three British insect monitoring organisations, a global biodiversity 17 database and an authoritative text covering the national flora. Almost two-thirds (62%) of 18 British pollinator species have peak flight observations during late summer (July and 19 August). This was the case across three of the groups studied: aculeate wasps (71% of 20 species), bees (60%), and butterflies (72%), the exception being hoverflies (49%). By 21 contrast, there is marked temporal partitioning in the flowering of the major plant groups: 22 insect-pollinated tree species blossoming predominantly during May (74%), shrubs in June 23 (69%), and herbs in July (83%). -

,. A Newsletter for Syrphidae (Diptera) workers, compiled by F. Christian Thompson Volume 2, number 2 - - FALL 1980 (December) SYRPHOS is a newsletter for and about syrphid workers. The purpose of SYRPHOS is to increase communication among people interested in syrphids and, thereby, to promote work on these flies. The newsletter includes information on workers, their collections, publications, and on-going research. Exchanges and address notices are also included. SYRPHOS is not a scientific publication and does not include formal nomenclatural actions. The third issue of SYRPHOS continues the style and fonnat of the first. Thanks are due to all who have responded with information. I apologize for not passing it on sooner. Remember infonnation is the basis of a newsletter. Ernst Torp Pedersen I was born on 5 June 1929 in Torp, Aulum, in the western part of Jutland, Denmark. As early as I can remember, I was interested in natural history, especially in birds. I worked on the farm where I was born until I was sixteen and spent my leisure time bird-banding. In 1950, I got a Higher School Certificate and began the study of Zoology at the University of Copenhagen under the leadership of the late Professor R. Sparck. I specialized in birds (Palaearctic Fringillidae) and studied Crossbills. -

In 1980 and 1981, the insect fauna of six well-managed, mature stands of Nor way spruce in Gludsted Plantation, Central Jutland, Denmark, was sampled us ing trays and white bucket traps on the forest ground, as well as white buckets at three canopy levels. Here, we report on the species composition of three major taxa, generally recognized as important aphidophagous groups, viz. Syrphidae, Coccinellidae and Neuroptera (s. !at.). Among c. 3000 adult syrphid specimens and 48 species, Helophilus pendulus, Melanostoma scalare, Meliscaeva cinctella and Platycheirus cyaneuswere very domi nant (>10% each). Conifer or spruce specialist species (sensu Torp, 1994) were far less numerous or even absent. Among c. 450 adult and larval coccinellids and only 5 species, Anatis occellata was very numerous and Aphidecta oblitterata and Myzia oblongoguttata fairly common. Among c. 200 adult Neuroptera and only 6 spe cies, one species, Hemerobius pini, was very dominant and apart from Wesmaelius quadrifasciatus other species only occurred singly. The species composition showed considerable similarities across stands and years. Thus, the species com position of Norway spruce/ conifer biotopes appeared sharply delimited from the well-known species communities of mixed farmland landscapes and of de ciduous forests in Denmark and neighbouring countries. Catches from ground-canopy trap transects varied greatly between groups and stages.
