Editor’s Note: Bowen-based Ian More about Walker, an old friend of Ing and Barbara, sent through this note Dipodium (Editor) in October. He records seeing the lovely ground orchid The genus Dipodium includes Dipodium ensifolium on about 30 species, distributed Walsh’s Pyramid. I thought it from southern Australia through might be of interest. to Vanuatu, Malaysia and the Philippines. I finally found the Dipodium ensifolium photos from the Most Australian species are Pyramid. They were prints that leafless; instead of capturing I have scanned at 600dpi. They sunlight and photosynthesizing, aren’t especially good but I’ll they are parasitic on a fungus just attach them all and you can (mycotrophic). It has been a regenerate quite happily after warm winter but if you are fire, and it must be pretty tough – lucky there might still be some David Jones reports it grows from out up there. sea level to the top of Bartle Frere (that’s where I first saw it). From memory they were in a fairly large clear grassy area to the left of the track going up a bit past the half way rock. There was a large sheet of rock if you went farther left. There aren’t a lot of clear grass areas up there.

If you are interested maybe I can get away next year and we can climb up together. I used to climb it regularly when I lived at Gordonvale and then every year since for about 20 years. I ran the race twice. Since then my girth has increased and my drive decreased but I’d still get up there I think.

I'll look up my notes and see if I can find other flowering times in other years. These are the only photos I have of them as I came to photography late.

I was very interested in the New Guinea Spathoglottis in the newsletter. I collected a seed pod from one near the base of Stony Creek Falls I think it was. It was listed as the type location in Bailey’s “Flora of Queensland”. I sent it to the Australian Orchid Foundation seed bank but I suspect it never came to anything.
