Benedek pápa 2012. október 11-én megnyitotta a „Hit évét”. Ez alkalmat nyújtott arra, hogy történetileg és napjaink jelen idejére vonatkoztatva is meg- vizsgáljuk a hit megnyilvánulási formáit a vallási élet, a vallási kultúra egész te- rületén. A téma vizsgálatának másik időszerűségét az adja, hogy 50 évvel ezelőtt nyílt meg a II. Vatikáni Zsinat, amely alapvető változásokat hozott a római katoli- kus vallási életben, vallásgyakorlásban. Legszembetűnőbb az anyanyelvi liturgia bevezetése és a liturgikus év reformja volt. Az újítások hatására számos új vallási közösség és mozgalom alakult, indult útjára. Legszembetűnőbb az ökumenikus mozgalom megerősödése. A kor új ideálokat, példaképeket keresett. Ilyen példa- kép lehet Bálint Sándor, tanszékünk professzora 1947-1966 között, akinek boldog- gá avatási eljárása elindult. Su suerte atrajo la atención de organizaciones caritativas católicas, como la Organización de Socorro a Sacerdotes Orientales, que les proporcionó ayuda material y espiritual a través de una flota de capillas móviles. En este artícu- lo se afirma que esta acción fue una forma genuinamente moderna del trabajo misionero, en el sentido de que tanto su méto- do como mensaje fueron hijos de su tiempo: viviendo en una cultura de la movilidad generalizada y de comunicación de masas, la palabra de una iglesia triunfalista se extendió reclamando su superioridad moral sobre otras visiones del mundo, en particu- lar sobre el comunismo. Por otra parte, los camiones capilla anticiparon un cambio de paradigma fundamental en el cuidado pastoral, llevando la iglesia a las personas en contra de lo que sucedía habitualmente. ABSTRACT In the aftermath of World War II, twelve million Germans were forced to seek refuge elsewhere in their country. Their sort attrac- ted the attention of Catholic charities such as the Eastern Priests Relief Organization, which provided material and spiritual assis- tance through a fleet of mobile chapels. This paper claims that this action was a genuinely modern form of missionary work in the sense that both its method and message were a child of its time: dwelling on a culture of generalized mobility and mass com- munication, it spread the word of a triumphalist church claiming moral superiority over other world views, in particular commu- nism.

The freedom to profess and practice one’s faith, to believe, and the freedom of expression and behaviour in public life as believer, is a birth right of every human being. It is ingrained in every human heart. This is what we, Europeans believe. Those rights are justly recognised under international law. The promotion of international religious freedom is one of the priorities of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group at the European Parliament. It is a priority for me, as Vice- Chairman of the EPP Group responsible for interreligious dialogue and intercultural activities – Jan Olbrycht MEP As there can be no security in Europe unless there is also security in the Mediterranean; likewise, there can be no security in the Middle East and North Africa or any other part of the world unless there is (also security and) full respect for religious freedom between Muslim majorities and other religious minorities. It should be stated that this kind of interaction also applies to interactions between other religious majorities and religious minorities. The EU has got to take this on board.     Religion, State and Society Vol. 22, No. 1, 1994 Book Reviews A Fragrance o/Oppression: the Church and Its Persecutors by Herbert Schlossberg. Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway Books, 1991. viii + 252pp. Paperback. Though written in a popular style, this book is unlikely to be widely read for the very reason it needed to be written. The subject of persecution is of marginal interest to most Christians in Western Europe and North America. Centuries of power and privilege have led western churches to lose their focus on persecution. The collapse of the militantly atheistic Soviet bloc may make the persecution of the church seem still more remote from the western perspective. In his new book, Herbert Schlossberg has made a valiant effort to bring the theme of persecution closer to the centre of church life in the western world and motivate it to act in solidarity with persecuted Christians. Schlossberg's starting point is the gospel: the Christian church has been persecuted since its foundation. Jesus promised that his followers would be persecuted. The New Testament portrays persecution of the church as a permanent feature of the cosmic struggle between good and evil. A Fragrance 0/ Oppression is far from an arid chronicle of two millennia of trial and tribulation. It is a lively and lucid analysis of persecution of the church, including an abundance of cases in support of the author's conclusions. Writing before the complete collapse ofthe Soviet Union, Mr Schlossberg focuses his attention primarily on repression of the church under communism and the lamentably inadequate response from western Christendom.

    ABSTRACT It’s Our Country and It’s Our Cathedral: Sajūdis and the Lithuanian Catholic Church Miranda Zapor Cruz, Ph.D. Mentor: B. Michael Long, Ph.D. Lietuvos Persitvarkymo Sąjūdis, ‘Lithuanian Movement for Perestroika’, was the popular nationalist movement that led Lithuania toward independence from the Soviet Union on 11 March 1990. In order to gain the Lithuanian people’s support, Sajūdis capitalized on the historically close bond between Catholicism and national identity. This dissertation will examine the relationship between Sajūdis and the Lithuanian Catholic Church (LCC), which will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of Lithuanian history and the importance of religious nationalism for Lithuania’s popular independence movement. This dissertation argues that the relationship between Sajūdis and the Lithuanian Catholic Church was essential, intentional, and mutually beneficial. Sajūdis’ relationship with the LCC was essential for the movement’s success. Although there were several cultural and historical aspects of Lithuanian national identity that might have served as foundations for the independence movement, the Catholic Church was deeply connected to Lithuanian nationalism and had greater mass appeal and trust than any other source of national identity. Moreover, as a sacred institution, the LCC had the ability to legitimate Sajūdis and motivate Lithuanians to support the independence movement. Both Sajūdis and the LCC intentionally forged their relationship by courting the other’s support and involvement. Sajūdis courted the LCC’s support by recruiting priests and giving them prominent roles at rallies and other events, and by incorporating into its political agenda the LCC’s concerns, including religious freedom and property. The LCC demonstrated its support for Sajūdis through participation in the movement’s events and promotion of its political ideals.
