Borne of the uniform, Wore the uniform, Wed the uniform, and Bore the uniform. But a few other things have filled in the gaps. She is the National Director and Founder of the Hero To Hero Troop Morale Campaign, a non-political troop support program that went from a small local effort for first responders to be able to show their support for our troops by giving the very shirts off their backs to hometown troops deployed to war zones around the globe. After the death of a young cousin, Sgt Jacob Herring, in Talafar, Iraq, 2004, the program went national, and ultimately international. As of this writing, over 40,000 first responders have stepped up for our troops, and the program tour has happened 4 times, covering the distance of twice around the equator. After 7 years, Liz has fulfilled the promise made when their cousin was killed, and the stateside program has stood down. She remains involved with the Canadian part of the campaign and plans to always be a part of honoring our Fallen & Wounded. "Troops don't choose their battles, any more than firefighters or police." WILSON Washington State Patrol United States Coast Guard Seattle Area Honor Guard - 5 - Excerpt from the Akron Beacon Journal on May 30, 2005 President Harry S. Truman couldn’t believe his eyes. He scanned the war hero’s record and spoke with glowing admiration. President Truman remarked, “This is the most remarkable list of citations I have ever seen.” Never before in American history had one soldier collected so many medals in one day. Llewellyn Chilson, “the fightingest man” in the 45th Infantry Division, was the second most decorated soldier of World War II. He Sgt. Chilson and family meet President Truman earned 29 medals, including three Distinguished Service Crosses, two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge and two French Croix de Guerre. Born in 1920, Chilson was a scrappy kid on the mean streets of Akron, OH. On March 28, 1942 - just days shy of his 22nd birthday - he was drafted into the U.S. Army for WWII. He trained for a year before joining the 179th Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, which shipped out of Camp Patrick Henry, VA, in June 1943. The Axis powers would soon know his fury as a warrior. He battled his way across North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, France and Germany. The war ended for him two weeks before Germany’s official surrender May 8, 1945. The wounded soldier was transported to the 34th General Hospital in Stockbridge, England. While he was in the hospital he noticed a pretty nurse named Mary. She was from Santa Barbara, CA. They were married later that year. Llewellyn and Mary had two daughters, Roberta and Marilyn. He was discharged from the service in 1945 but re-enlisted in 1947 and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX and later at Ft. Sill, OK. In 1963 he retired from the Army at the age of 44. Llewellyn M. Chilson died in October 1981 during a vacation to Tampa, FL. He was 61 years old. “The fightingest man” of the 45th Infantry Division was buried with full military honors here at Mountain View Memorial Park. Music is provided today by the Brass Quintet of the 56th Army Band, I Corps, JBLM. The 56th Army Band is comprised of 40 musician-soldiers. Soldiers demonstrate the highest professional performance and appearance standards to best represent the Army and to serve the nation. The 56th Army Band was constituted on 12 October 1943 and activated in Sicily on 29 October 1943 as the Band, 9th Infantry Division. The Band was activated as the I Corps band on 8 July 1991. The Band’s distinguished history includes 13 campaign participation credits for World War II and Vietnam. The Band received many decorations; most notable is the Meritorious Unit Commendation awarded by Presidential Order in 1968. - 6 - MUSICAL SELECTIONS Brass Quintet of the 56th Army Band, I Corps, Joint Base Lewis McChord WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION BY MASTER OF CEREMONIES Curt Atkinson of the Pierce County Veterans Advisory Council WELCOME BY THE MAYOR Mayor Doug Richardson PRESENTATION OF COLORS United States Army, 4th Stryker BDE/2nd ID Honor Guard, I Corps, Joint Base Lewis McChord Doughboys of American Legion Post 138 RAISING OF THE NATIONAL COLORS AND NATIONAL ANTHEM Wild West Post 91, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Brass Quintet of the

  • U. S. ARMY SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA AUTHORIZED SINCE 1989 (Revised June 2013)
    U. S. ARMY SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA AUTHORIZED SINCE 1989 (Revised June 2013) I invite my friends to use this document freely and share with other collectors. It was created to identify SSI authorized by TIOH after the publication of Richard W. Smith’s book “Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the U.S. Army 1946 - 1989” so I have selected 1 January 1990 as the starting point for this document. I have not addressed redesignations of pre-1990 SSIs, but the 1106th and 1109th Signal Brigades are included in this document because their new brigade number designation can cause confusion. Collectors are finding several of the new patches with size and color variations. The only variations listed in this document are those that are documented TIOH changes of the original design of the SSI. I want to thank COL Mike Jorgensen for meticulously editing and adding to this document.
