Kimm III Foreword Leslie Kimm has produced a wonderfully researched and detailed account of the history and development of the Herts and Essex Aero Club, recounting many of the fascinating and extraordinary experiences of club members and of others connected with Broxbourne Aerodrome. Much of the contents feature my parents, family members and friends, who initiated the idea of a local flying club, and so successfully brought it to fruition. The writings were originally intended to be a personal record of Les’s own experiences with the club, but my mother, Hetty Frogley, on hearing of this, suggested and encouraged him to write down a more detailed history of the club itself. I am sure that she would have been so pleased with what Les has achieved. In many ways the pre-war years were a period of great freedom and adventure, prior to the dark clouds of war gathering.

Clubs, print out a copy or two for your clubhouse. We have been privileged over many years to have had Gil Parcell among our throng. He was a professional illustrator and cartoonist beginning back in the 60s, and the day he took up gliding as a pas- time was start of a long happy association with editors in Canada and the USA, and his work has filtered into gliding publications around the world.     IGC – FAI Challenge Cups Author : Gisela Weinreich FAI Challenge Cups 1.1 Rules The FAI Challenge Cups are awarded to the world champions of FAI World Gliding Championships in following classes Open Class, 20 m Multi Seat Class, 18 m Class, 15 m Class, Standard Class, Club Class and 13,5 m Class Women’s Standard Class, 15 m or 18 m Class, Club Class Junior’s Standard Class , Club Class Robert-Kronfeld-Challenge Cup . The Cup will be presented to a pilot flying at the World Championships that is competed in the Open Class, 18 m Class and 20 m Multi Seat Class so far. Criteria see History of the Robert Kronfeld Challenge Cup. The FAI Challenge Team Cups will be presented to the Team Champion in FAI Women’s World Gliding Championships and Junior World Gliding Championships to the team scoring the highest number of points according to the IGC Annex A Team Cup rules. 1.1.2 Administration Since 2008 World Gliding Championships have been divided into two events within the same calendar year at different places due to 6 classes in competition. 6 World Gliding Champions will be awarded in 2 events. In the subsequent calendar year the 13,5 m class WGC, the Women’s WGC and the Junior’s WGC will take place, 6 World Gliding Champions will be awarded in this respective Calendar year so far. The FAI Challenge Cups and FAI Challenge Team Cups shall be kept by the winners until the next World Gliding Championships take place and shall be returned to the organisers of the WGC before the start of the following championships.

    GLIDING HERITAGE CENTRE A HISTORY OF BRITISH GLIDING PART 1 – THE BEGINNINGS TO THE END OF WORLD WAR 2 Author Glyn Bradney Description First part of the History of British Gliding Date 20th January 2015, version 1) INTRODUCTION From the start of my writing gliding articles for the Gliding Heritage Centre website I’ve always intended to compose one on the “History of British Gliding”. After a considerable amount of research I came to the conclusion that a single document would have to be a very large one indeed if justice was to be done to the subject. So in telling the story I’ve decided the sensible course is to write a “Part 1” so as to begin the task. The start of Part 1 is obvious – the “Beginnings”! I’ve taken the decision that the logical cut-off should be the end of World War 2. The reason for this is that all civilian gliding became illegal as of Easter 1940. Yes, some “naughty boys” disregarded this, and some became guests of His Majesty King George VI as a consequence! You could fly “privately”, however, if you were an ATC instructor and flying from an ATC airfield, and many did. Note with a victorious end to WW2 in sight in 1945 the authorities took a much more relaxed view to “illegal gliding”. Starting in 1946 the British gliding movement began the task of regenerating itself after 6 years of war, a very difficult task as it was a time of considerable austerity. So post WW2 will be “Part 2”.
