This material is as applicable now as when it was first written. The opinions expressed here are those of the author and are not necessarily those of the Nautical Research Guild. Ship Models that Ought to be Built 2 In an earlier article I expressed some opinions on ship models that ought not be built. Many readers of this journal did not agree with me and expressed their disagreements. I must say I have not been impressed by the reasons given for disagreement for I cannot yet understand why a modeler would want to build a model that he knows is not the ship it is supposed to be. On the other hand I know too well that accurate, or reasonably accurate, plans of some very interesting craft are not easily found. However, there are a huge number of plans in existence and I am sure that most will agree with me if I say that among these are certainly many possibilities for very valuable and informative models. Now, I admit I have an ulterior motive in bringing up this subject. I recently asked our long-suffering editor (Merritt Edson) to ascertain what ships interested model builders in the Guild so that some plan could be assembled for the pages of the Journal. -

On the twelfth of June, 1783, a ship of 500 tons sailed into the Russian harbor of Riga and dropped anchor. As the tide pivoted her around her mooring, the Russians on the waterfront could see clearly the banner that she flew — a strange device of white stars on a blue ground and horizontal red and white stripes. Russo-American trade had irrevocably begun. Merchants — Muscovite and Yankee — had met and politely sounded the depths of each other's purses. And they had agreed to do business. In the years that followed, until 1812, the young American nation became economically tied to Russia to a degree that has not, perhaps, been realized to date. The United States desperately needed Russian hemp and linen; the American sailor of the early nineteenth century — who was possibly the most important individual in the American economy — thought twice before he took any craft not equipped with Russian rigging, cables, and sails beyond the harbor mouth. To an appreciable extent, the Amer ican economy survived and prospered because it had access to the unending labor and rough skill of the Russian peasant. Two conspicuous headlands strike the attention of the European voyager approaching the North Atlantic coast. Reaching out boldly seaward they serve to mark the general direction of the shore, yet between them a vast expanse of' water stretches to the north a day's sail beyond sight. These headlands are Cape Sable and Cape Cod,' whose outer lights range with each other about east-north-east anci west-south west, and are distant in a right line about 250 miles. Facing this line, at an average distance of 125 miles, lies the const of Maine; fronted right and left by these two capes-great salients lying out like couchant lions guarding its broad approach. For, on their range a perpendicular from Cape Sable passes very Hear Eastport, the easternlllost town of Maine; while a perpendicular from Nauset light, passing between Cape Ann and the Isles of Shoals, strikes not far from the city of Portsmouth on the Piscataqlla river, which forms part of the western boundary of Maine. -

1929.] The Development of the Clipper Ship 49 THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CLIPPER SHIP BY CHABLES E. PARK T HAS been said that during the fifteen or twenty I years which came exactly in the middle of the 19th Century, America was the mistress of the seas. If such a statement means that the American fiag was to be seen in every port of the world, that American bottoms commanded the highest freight rates, that American vessels held all records for speed, that American ships were unexcelled in size, in beauty, and in seaworthy qualities, and that American captains were unequalled in skill and daring, the statement is a true one. The type of vessel by means of which this suprem- acy on the ocean was attained is known as the Clipper Ship. That designation must be understood as a technical one. A clipper is a vessel designed for speed at the expense of carrying capacity, such design taking the form of sharpness and slenderness of hull with clean, fiowing, graceful lines that offer the least possible resistance to the water at the bows, that create the least possible drag or inrush of water under the stern, and that create the smallest possible wake or swell as the vessel moves ahead. In other words, a clipper is a vessel so carefully designed as to move through the water with the least possible commotion, hence with the greatest ease. A ship is a vessel rigged with three masts, and with square sails on each mast. This rig at the time of which we are speaking was considered the standard rig for ocean going vessels. -

It was a chart of the Base giving all the details of command from the Commander down and details of procedure. “Just the thing the Academy needs to inform its members and acquaint them with procedure,” said Walt. “The Bylaws at a glance. Nobody reads them and here is the answer.” On application to the commander to remove it, permission was given and Walt had the nucleus of the History of the Academy of Model Aeronautics in his pocket. Well, it’s been a battle ever since. -

The Sheriffs of Carver County The First 150 Years: 1855-2005 The Sheriffs of Carver County The First 150 Years: 1855-2005 John von Walter Published in 2005 under the auspices of the Carver County Sesquicentennial Committee, with support and funds granted by the Carver County Board Notes and Acknowledgements In mid November 2004 Carver County Sheriff Bud Olson and his Administrative Assistant Pam Raser paid me a visit, knowing that I had been researching the history of the old Town of Carver and Levi Griffin, the first Sheriff of Carver County. They pressed me into joining the Carver County Sesquicentennial Committee, and in particular to research and write the biographies of all the Carver County Sheriffs over the last century and a half. As a history lover the idea intrigued me, for several years earlier I had tried to find a roster of all the Sheriffs of Carver County, and was unable to do so. I took custody of some files the Sheriff’s Office had acquired and compiled over the years, and was soon hooked on the subject, gathering piles and piles of additional materials to assemble into biographies on all of the sheriffs over the last century and a half. The project soon developed into this book, The Sheriffs of Carver County, The first 150 years: 1855-2005, with plans afoot to publish the book’s individual sheriff biographies in each of Carver County’s five newspapers throughout the Sesquicentennial year 2005 as part of the ongoing celebrations of Carver County history.
