3 Wishes and Prayers for the Future the poet as prophet In chapter 1, I looked at some ways in which the rhetoric, style, and placement of themes in the epinician ode are influenced by the con- cerns of the present moment—the immediate circumstances of the performance. In chapter 2, I explored the role played by the past in the epinician celebration, and brought out some ways in which the epinician perspective on the past, its function, and its significance are reflected in the performance conventions of the genre. In this third and final chapter, I turn to the topic of the future. I consider how the future functions as a theme in epinician poetry, and I explore the ways in which the future is relevant to the epicinian performance and cele- bration. One general function of the epinician ode is to situate the new athletic victory within a broader temporal framework. The epinician poet undertakes, among other things, to locate and interpret the sig- nificance of the victory not only in relation to present-day concerns and events of long ago, but also in the light of the future time that is to come. Consequently, wishes and prayers for the future are a promi- nent convention of the genre. The wishes and prayers for the future we find in Pindar’s epinician odes contain many allusions to the future’s uncertainty. They express the hope that the victor’s, his family’s, and his city’s happiness will continue into the future, but warn that present success guarantees nothing about the future. -

SUN MYTHS and RESURRECTION MYTHS. THERE Is a Type Of
SUN MYTHS AND RESURRECTION MYTHS. THERE is a type of resurrection myth, originating in Thrace and in North Greece, the connexion of which with the sun and moon worship is at present unduly set aside in favour of the Demeter-Persephone derivation. This type is seen in the stories, so popular in the art and drama of fifth century Athens, of the wife or husband who prevails against death, for a time at least, by recovering the beloved one. The most famous examples form a triad which is frequently mentioned, the tales of Laodamia, Alcestis, and Orpheus. The beautiful slab representing Orpheus and Eurydice at the fatal moment when restitit, Eurydicenque stiam iam luce sub ipsa immemor heu victusque animi respexit was made no doubt under the influence of the great Parthenon sculpture and very possibly about the time of the production of the Alcestis of Euripides in 438.1 Indeed in the Alcestis (348 ff.) there is one passage in which the three myths are linked. There is a reference to the plot of the Protesilaos of Euripides in the use of the image-motive, immediately followed by a reference to the journey of Orpheus. I quote the translation by Gilbert Murray:— ' O, I shall find some artist wondrous wise Shall mould for me thy shape, thine hair, thine eyes, And lay it in thy bed; and I will lie Close, and reach out mine arms td thee and cry Thy name into the night and wait and hear My own heart breathe; " Thy love, thy love is near." A cold delight; yet it might ease the sum Of sorrow . -

Iamus Son of Apollo and Evadne, Daughter of Poseidon; the Mythical
I Iacchus (Ἴακχος). A minor deity who was honoured with Demeter and Persephone at the Eleusinian mysteries and the festival of the Lernaea. Initiates travelling along the Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis, would utter a rhythmic chant of Iacch’ O Iache, and this may have suggested that a god called Iacchus was being invoked. So Iacchus was supposed to be a son of Demeter, or her consort; or a son of Persephone who was sometimes identified with *Zagreus. Alternatively, because his name resembles *Bacchus he was thought to have been a son of Dionysus, or even the god himself. Iacchus was depicted in works of art as an adolescent leading the initiates with a torch in his hand. [Aristophanes Frogs 398; Herodotus 8.65; Ovid Met 4.15; Vergil Ecl 7.61, Georg 1.166]For a late account of his birth, see Aura. Ialmenus (Ἰάλμενος). Son of Ares and Astyoche; he and his brother Ascalaphus led the Minyans of Boeotia to Troy in thirty ships. In the late epic of Quintus of Smyrna, he was one of the warriors in the wooden horse. He settled by the Black Sea after the war, or, according to another account which implies that he returned home, he was buried with his brother in Boeotia. Along with Baubo she succeeded in raising a smile from *Demeter when the grieving goddess rested with Metanira in the search for her daughter *Persephone. -

Robert Graves – The Greek Myths 1955, revised 1960 Robert Graves was born in 1895 at Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His principal calling is poetry, and his Selected Poems have been published in the Penguin Poets. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he has since earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include: I, Claudius; Claudius the God; Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth; Count Belisarius; Wife to Mr Milton (all published as Penguins); Proceed, Sergeant Lamb; The Golden Fleece; They Hanged My Saintly Billy; and The Isles of Unwisdom. He wrote his autobiography, Goodbye to All That (a Penguin Modem Classic), in 1929. His two most discussed non-fiction books are The White Goddess, which presents a new view of the poetic impulse, and The Nazarene Gospel Restored (with Joshua Podro), a re-examination of primitive Christianity.
