It covers the information pertaining to the availability of resources, infrastructural support, existing status of industries, institutional support for MSMEs, etc. I am sure this District Industrial Profile would be highly beneficial for all the Stakeholders of MSMEs. It is full of academic essence and is expected to provide all kinds of relevant information about the District at a glance. This compilation aims to provide the user a comprehensive insight into the industrial scenario of the district. I would like to appreciate the relentless effort taken by Shri Ravi Kant, Assistant Director (EI) in preparing this informative District Industrial Profile right from the stage of data collection, compilation upto the final presentation. Any suggestion from the stakeholders for value addition in the report is welcome. Place: Patna Date: 31.03.2020 3 Brief Industrial Profile of Gaya District 1. General Characteristics of the District– Gaya formed a part of the district of Behar and Ramgarh till 1864. It was given the status of independent district in 1865. Subsequently, in May 1981, Magadh Division was created by the Bihar State Government with the districts of Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad and Jehanabad. All these districts were at the level of sub- division when the Gaya district was created in 1865. About the origin of the name ‘Gaya' as referred to in Vayu Purana is that Gaya was the name of a demon (Asura) whose body was pious after he performed rigid penance and secured blessings from Vishnu. It was said that the Gayasura's body would continue to be known as Gaya Kshetra. It would be incumbent upon all sons to offer PINDA (oblations) for the salvation of the soul of their ancestors. All the 360 vedis for pindadana were located within this Pancha Kosi Gaya Kshetra. The soul could be freed from the agonies of Hell and sent to Heaven by performing Gaya-Shraddha within this area. Gaya has been named after the demon 1.1 Location & Geographical Area: Gaya district spreading over an area of 4976 sq.km lies between North latitudes 24°30´: 25° 06´ 00´´ and East longitudes 84° 24´ 00´´ : 85° 30´ 00´´ with its headquarter at Gaya. The district is divided into 4 sub-divisions - Tekari ,Gaya sadar, Neem Chak Bathani, Sherghati and 24 administrative blocks namely i) Konch ii) Tikari iii) Belaganj iv) Khizarsarai v) Neem Chak Bathani vi) Muhra vii) Atri viii) Manpur ix) Gaya x) Paraiya xi) Guraru xii) Gurua xiii) Amas xiv) Banke bazaar xv) Imamganj xvi) Dumaria xvii) Sherghati xviii) Dobhi xix) Bodh Gaya xx) Tan Kuppa xxi) Wazirganj xxii) Fatehpur xxiii) Mohanpur xxiv) Barachatti. The district is bounded in the north by Arwal, Jahanabad and Nalanda districts, in the east by Nawada and west by Aurangabad district. The southern part is bounded by Jharkhand state. Gaya is 100 kilometres south of Patna, and is situated on the banks of Falgu River. It is a place sanctified by both the Hindu and the Buddhist religions. It is surrounded by small rocky hills (Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni) by three sides and the river flowing on the fourth (western) side. Gaya occupies a total of 4976 sq. kms. Gaya is covered by Jehanabad district on the north, on the south by Chatra district of Jharkhand. On the east by Nawada district and on the west by Aurangabad district. Gaya airport is declared as an International airport. 4 1.2 Topography- The district falls under Punpun sub-basin of the Ganga basin. The drainage network in the district is represented by four parallel streams, the Morhar, the Phalgu, the Paimar and the Dhadhar all emanating from the southern plateau and flowing north and northeasterly. The river Phalgu flows from south to north through the area. It is formed by the union of two streams namely Lilajan and Mohana. Lilajan and Mohana are two large hilly streams originating in Hazaribagh Plateau. The width of the Phalgu at the junction of these two streams is about 274 m. These two united streams named as river Phalgu flows northwardly and pass by the town of Gaya where it its width is nearly 825 m. The streams, Lilajan and Mohana bring in high floodwater during the peak rainy season. Otherwise they flow as tiny rivulets meandering through wide sandy beds. 1.3 Availability of Minerals: The mineral resources of Gaya district playing massive role in industrial, social and economic development of the district. The available mineral resources in the5 district are: Mica Sand Sandstones Quartzite 1.4 FOREST: The forest cover of the district is approximately 77836 hectares, which is 15.67% of total geographical area of the district. It belongs to the category of reserve forests. The “Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary Gaya” is covering an area of 259.48sq.km and & protected forest area. The main crops are paddy, wheat, potato and lentils. The main vegetable market is in Kedarnath market. Gaya has a large number of household industries like production of Agarbattis, production of Tilkut and Lai, stone craft, power looms and hand looms. Gaya functions as a service centre for the surrounding towns and villages. Commercial activities are located along the important roads of the town. Gaya has a large number of informal shops. There is no large scale industry or public sector undertakings in Gaya. 1.7 Culture & Heritage: The two prominent festivals celebrated in Gaya are the Gaya Pitru Paksha Mela and Buddha Purnima. In the Pitru Paksha Mela, devotees offer food to departed ancestors as a way of respect called Pind Daan, which is believed to be fruitful when performed in Gaya. Buddha Purnima marks the birthday of Buddha and is celebrated with pomp and includes prayer meetings, meditation, processions and reading of scriptures. Like most ancient cities, Gaya has a rich history of arts and crafts which continues to this day. The skilled artisans of Gaya are experts at crafting household products and religious offerings out of stone. Bodhgaya is a spiritual city. The life of the natives here is very simple and traditional. Various temples and Buddhist monasteries have been built here through the ages and many international Buddhist communities have contributed to the same. The Mahabodhi temple is an integral part of their history and culture. During the month6 of May, on the first full moon night, people celebrate the birth and the enlightenment of Gautama Buddha. The city would be decked up and there will be numerous processions, insights on Buddhism principles, spiritual discourses etc. Another festival which is celebrated for world peace is the Nyingma Monlam Chenmol festival. The Dalai Lama is also known to have attended this event. With regard to cuisine, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available here. Thai and Tibetan cuisines are popular. There is an Archaeological Museum in the city where you can see quite an interesting collection of relics, scriptures, and ancient statues of Buddha. Bodhgaya is famous for a wide variety of statues of Buddha. These statues come in different sizes and are made of both metal and sandalwood.
