A Review of the Japanese Kateretidae Fauna (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

The family Kateretidae of Japan is revised. Nine species belonging to 6 genera are recognized, including: Kateretes japonicus Hisamatsu, 1985, K. takagii S-T. Hisamatsu, 2006, Platamartus jakowlewi Reitter, 1892, Heterhelus (Heterhelus) scutellaris (Heer, 1841), H. (Heterhelus) morio (Reitter, 1878), H. (Boreades) solani (Heer, 1841), Sibirhelus corpulentus (Reitter, 1900), Brachyp- terus urticae (Fabricius, 1792), and Brachypterolus pulicarius (Linnaeus, 1758). Heterhelus morio, which was synonymized under H. scutellaris by KIREJTSHUK (1989), is found to be a valid species, and is herein resurrected. Platamartus jakowlewi is newly recorded from Japan. Brachypterolus shimoyamai Hisamatsu, 1985, syn. nov., is synonymized under Brachypterolus pulicarius. Dorsal habitus images, illustrations of male and female genitalia, and other important diagnostic characters are provided for all species. A key for identifi cation of all Japanese taxa is also provided. Key words. Coleoptera, Kateretidae, taxonomy, new synonym, new record, key, Japan, Palaearctic Region Introduction The family Kateretidae, belonging to the superfamily Cucujoidea, is mainly distributed in the Holarctic Region, and comprises about 95 species within 14 genera worldwide (JELÍNEK & CLINE 2010). Both larval and adult Kateretidae are anthophagous: the larvae are monophagous or oligophagous, while adults are more generalized feeders, occurring on true host plants only during mating and ovipositing periods; otherwise, they feed on a broader assortment of fl owering plants (JELÍNEK & CLINE 2010). -

ALEXANDER Museum of Zoology and Departmentof Zoology The Universityof Michigan,Ann Arbor ABSTRACT Seven general kinds of life cycles are known among crickets; they differ chieff,y in overwintering (diapause) stage and number of generations per season, or diapauses per generation. Some species with broad north-south ranges vary in these respects, spanning wholly or in part certain of the gaps between cycles and suggesting how some of the differences originated. Species with a particular cycle have predictable responses to photoperiod and temperature regimes that affect behavior, development time, wing length, bod)• size, and other characteristics. Some polymorphic tendencies also correlate with habitat permanence, and some are influenced by population density. Genera and subfamilies with several kinds of life cycles usually have proportionately more species in temperate regions than those with but one or two cycles, although numbers of species in all widely distributed groups diminish toward the higher lati tudes. The tendency of various field cricket species to become double-cycled at certain latitudes appears to have resulted in speciation without geographic isolation in at least one case. Intermediate steps in this allochronic speciation process are illustrated by North American and Japanese species; the possibility that this process has also occurred in other kinds of temperate insects is discussed. A total of 60 species of orthopteroid insects were identified, belonging to 58 genera from 17 families and 5 orders. Mantids are represented by 3 families, 6 genera and 6 species; cockroaches – by 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; earwigs – by 3 families, 3 genera and 3 species; sticks insects – by 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species. Orthopterans are most numerous (8 families, 46 genera and 48 species). Of these, three species, Bolivaria brachyptera, Hierodula tenuidentata and Ceraeocercus fuscipennis, are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Celes variabilis and Chrysochraon dispar indicated for the first time for a given location. The fauna of orthopteroid insects in the studied areas of Kyzylorda is compared with other regions of Kazakhstan. -
Influence of Female Cuticular Hydrocarbon (CHC) Profile on Male Courtship Behavior in Two Hybridizing Field Crickets Gryllus

Maroja3* Abstract Background: The hybridizing field crickets, Gryllus firmus and Gryllus pennsylvanicus have several barriers that prevent gene flow between species. The behavioral pre-zygotic mating barrier, where males court conspecifics more intensely than heterospecifics, is important because by acting earlier in the life cycle it has the potential to prevent a larger fraction of hybridization. The mechanism behind such male mate preference is unknown. Here we investigate if the female cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile could be the signal behind male courtship. Results: While males of the two species display nearly identical CHC profiles, females have different, albeit overlapping profiles and some females (between 15 and 45%) of both species display a male-like profile distinct from profiles of typical females. We classified CHC females profile into three categories: G. firmus-like (F; including mainly G. firmus females), G. pennsylvanicus-like (P; including mainly G. pennsylvanicus females), and male-like (ML; including females of both species). Gryllus firmus males courted ML and F females more often and faster than they courted P females (p < 0.05). Gryllus pennsylvanicus males were slower to court than G. firmus males, but courted ML females more often (p < 0.05) than their own conspecific P females (no difference between P and F). -

ARTICULATA 2013 28 (1/2): 115‒126 FAUNISTIK Nachweis der Heideschrecke Gampsocleis glabra (Herbst, 1786) (Ensifera) in der Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide (Sachsen-Anhalt) Björn Schäfer Abstract This paper gives details of the distribution and density of the very rare grasshop- per species Gampsocleis glabra in Germany and across Central Europe. The presence of the species was confirmed in the "Colbitz Letzlinger Heide" area in the north of Saxony-Anhalt in 2012. This small isolated population is described and possible protection measures for this vulnerable population are presented. Finally all grasshopper species are specified which are associated with Gampso- cleis glabra. Zusammenfassung Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden Angaben zur Verbreitung der in Deutschland und Mitteleuropa extrem seltenen Heuschreckenart Gampsocleis glabra darge- stellt. Die Art wurde im Jahr 2012 erstmalig in der Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide im Norden Sachsen-Anhalts nachgewiesen. Das kleinflächige und räumlich isoliert liegende Vorkommen wird beschrieben und es werden Hinweise zur Gefährdung sowie zu möglichen Maßnahmen zur Sicherung des Vorkommens auf dem TrÜbPl Altmark gegeben. Abschließend werden die mit Gampsocleis glabra ver- gesellschaftet vorkommenden Heuschreckenarten benannt. Einleitung Bei der Kartierung von Heuschrecken im Rahmen des aus Mitteln des Europäi- schen Landwirtschaftsfonds für die Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums (ELER) geförderten Projekts "Faunistische Untersuchungen zu kennzeichnenden Arten der FFH-Lebensraumtypen -Erfassung und Bewertung der Geradflügler im FFH- Gebiet 235 "Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide" (Nordteil)" wurden im Jahr 2012 auf einer Untersuchungsfläche mehrere Nachweise von Gampsocleis glabra erbracht. Im Folgenden werden die Verbreitung der Art, ihr Vorkommen in der Colbitz- Letzlinger Heide sowie ihre Gefährdung im Gebiet und mögliche Schutzmaß- nahmen dargestellt. Bemerkungen zu syntopen Heuschreckenarten ergänzen den Beitrag. -
New Orthoptera Records for Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick John Klymko, Robert W

Harding, Barry Cottam A checklist of the Orthoptera of the three Maritime provinces was published by Klymko et al. (2018). Even while it was in press, the Spring Field Cricket (Gryllus veletis) was added to the collective list (Lewis et al. 2019), and discoveries continue to be made. Here we present the first Prince Edward Island records of the Treetop Bush Katydid (Scudderia fasciata), the Roesel’s Shield-backed Katydid (Roeseliana roeselii), and the Sphagnum Ground Cricket (Neonemobius palustris) and the first New Brunswick records of the Drumming Katydid Meconema( thalassinum). Also presented are recent data for the occurrence of the Wingless Mountain Grasshopper (Booneacris glacialis) on Prince Edward Island, a species otherwise known only from historical records on the Island. Specimens reported here have been deposited in the collection of the New Brunswick Museum, and museum accession numbers are given for all specimens (e.g., NBM-070089). Response of Orthoptera Assemblages to Management of Montane Grasslands in the Western Carpathians

Štúra 2,SK-96053 Zvolen, Slovakia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Montane grassy habitats in the Western Carpathians are relatively well preserved, maintain high species richness and are often important in accordance to the nature conservation policy in Europe. However, knowledge about the impact of farming on the habitat quality there is rather poor. The influence of various management types (permanent sheep pen, irregular grazing, mowing) on Orthoptera diversity and species determining assemblages of these habitats were analysed on 72 plots in Poľana Mts Biosphere Reserve. Altogether, 36 Orthoptera species (15 Ensifera, 21 Caelifera) were found, whereas the highest number of species was found on plots with irregular grazing (28 species), followed by plots with mown grass (17) and permanent sheep pens (14). All four measures of the assemblages’ diversity confirmed significant differences. Using Discriminant Function Analysis, correct classification rate of Orthoptera assemblages was unambiguous according to the type of management. Each form of the management harboured several characteristic species. Thus implications regarding the biodiversity conservation and grassland management were given. BENTLEY AND WOLFRAM KUTSCH Department of Zoology, University of Michigan, Aim Arbor, and Institute for Comparative Animal Physiology, University of Cologne {Received 21 February 1966) INTRODUCTION Study of the insect neuromuscular system appears very promising as a means of explaining behaviour in terms of cellular operation. The relatively small number of neurons, the ganglionic nature of the nervous system, the simplicity of the neuro- muscular arrangement, and the repetitiveness of behavioural sequences all lend them- selves to a solution of this problem. As a result, an increasing number of investigators have been turning their attention to insects and especially to the large orthopterans. Recently, Ewing & Hoyle (1965) and Huber (1965) reported on muscle activity underlying sound production in crickets. The acoustic behaviour is well understood (Alexander, 1961) and in the genera Gryllus, Acheta and Gryllodes communication is mediated by three basic songs composed of three types of pulses. While working independently on this system at the University of Cologne (W.K.) and the University of Michigan (D.B.) using various Gryllus species, we found a number of basic differences between the muscle activity in our crickets and that reported by Ewing & Hoyle (1965) for Acheta domesticus. These two genera, Gryllus and Acheta, are so nearly identical that they are distinguished solely by differences in the male genitalia (Chopard, 1961). The present paper constitutes a survey of muscle activity patterns producing stridulation in four species of field crickets. -
The Sand Cricket, Gryllus Firmus and Its Relevance to the Evolution of Wing Dimorphisms in Insects

The sand cricket, Gryllus firmus is dimorphic with respect to wing length, some individuals being micropterous and others macropterous. The trait has a polygenic basis, micropterous parents producing a higher proportion of micropterous offspring than macropterous parents. The heritability of the trait, determined under a fixed photoperiod/temperature regime is 062 O•075 and 0•68 0•085 for males and females respectively. An alternate method of determining heritability based on a modified mid-parent on mean offspring regression is presented. This method is predicted to give an underestimate of heritability but permits an analysis of the separate influences of each parent. This analysis indicates the heritability in males and females to be 055 and that there are no maternal effects under the particular rearing conditions. A 5 hour shift in the photoperiod appears not to drastically change the heritability but a change in rearing temperature from 30°C to 25°C probably reduces it. Field observations suggest that at certain times of the year heritability may be relatively high whereas at others it could be very low. The adaptive significance of wing polymorphism and its evolution is discussed. Zoological Studies 50(5): 636-644. This study focused on the wing dimorphism of Eobiana engelhardti engelhardti (Uvarov 1926). To examine acoustic differences between macropters and brachypters, we recorded and analyzed the calling songs of the 2 forms. Moreover, the vocal organs of E. e. engelhardti were also observed under optical and scanning electric microscopy. As a result, there were 3 “dynamic” song traits which had significant differences between the 2 forms, but no obvious differences were observed in vocal organs. For macropters, we assumed that differentiation of these calling songs showed compensation for a reproductive disadvantage.
