Rays Honor First Responders In Friday Night Matchup With Orlando
After a wild 7-6 finish in their most recent clash on Wednesday, the South Carolina Stingrays and Orlando Solar Bears meet for the second time this week Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Already having seen each other for six contests this year, SC and Orlando will face off eight more times in the final two months of the 2020-21 regular season. Prior to Orlando’s high-scoring with earlier this week, the Solar Bears won the first three matchups before the Rays secured back-to-back wins at home March 27-28. Last week South Carolina fell 2-1 to Indy in overtime before earning a 3-2 shootout win in Wheeling on Friday. Orlando took three of four from the Greenville Swamp Rabbits last week before Wednesday’s win and an overtime loss to Jacksonville on Thursday. The Solar Bears are currently sitting in third place in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference standings (.573). South Carolina is currently just behind them in fifth place with a points percentage of .545. The Solar Bears rank third in the league on the penalty kill, discarding 87.0% of opponents’power play opportunities this season.

Orlando Finds Late Winner In Wild 7-6 Finish

The Orlando Solar Bears scored twice in the final five minutes to come away with a wild 7-6 win over the Stingrays on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in a game that featured three lead changes and 10 individual multi-point performances. Dan DeSalvo led the Stingrays with four assists in the contest, Andrew Cherniwchan, Max Gottlieb and Cole Ully each scored a goal and an assist and Darien Craighead posted two helpers. Both teams found the back of the net twice on the manadvantage, with the Rays finishing 2-for-4 while Orlando ended at 2-for-3.

Orlando is in third place in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference with a 25-18-4-1 record after 48 games. The Solar Bears have been led by forward Aaron Luchuk who has totaled 51 points on 18 goals and 33 assists. Defender Mark Auk has earned 21 assists and 26 points in 40 games with Orlando after recording five helpers at the start of the season with Rapid City. In addition, returning forward Tristin Langan has picked up 37 points (14g, 23a). Captain Chris LeBlanc has been hot as of late and has now totaled 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists in 47 games. Goaltender Clint Windsor is having another solid season for Orlando and was recently named the ECHL’s Goaltender of the Week. This season, Windsor has posted a 2.67 goals-against average along with a .915 save percentage and two shutouts.

Ully Continues Offensive Onslaught
Forward Cole Ully hit the 40-point mark for the fourth straight season during Wednesday night’s back and forth contest, posting a goal and an assist. The Calgary, Alberta native leads the team with 40 points on 15 goals and 25 assists in just 32 games played. His numbers rank him 8th in the ECHL in overall scoring and 9th in assists. In addition, the Calgary, Alberta native is 1st in the league in points per game among skaters with at least 10 games played (1.25).

DeSalvo Shines In 4-Point Night
Forward Dan DeSalvo assisted on four of South Carolina’s six goals in Wednesday’s loss to Orlando, posting a 4-point gmae for the second time in his professional career. The Rolling Meadows, Ill. first helped set up Max Gottlieb in the opening period before securing a power play point on Justin Florek’s tally in the middle frame and secured two assists in the third on goals by Caleb Herbert and Cole Ully. DeSalvo is second on the team with 35 points during 2020-21, totaling 11 goals and 24 assists.

Florek Hits Double-Digits
Veteran forward Justin Florek netted his 10th goal of the season Wednesday night against Orlando, finshing a play in front of the net while his club was on the man-advantage during the second period. Florek, who leads the club with 105 shots on goal this year in 40 games, is also now tied for the team lead with six tallies on the power play. His 21 total points are fifth-most of any SC skater.

Road Warriors
The Rays have been a tough out as a visitor so far this season, earning points from 14 of their 20 games on the road. One of their trademarks has been the penalty kill, which ranks fifth overall in the ECHL at 84.6% and fourth-best on the road (85.7%).

Forward Yanick Turcotte Assigned to Stingrays
SOUTH CAROLINA IN BRIEF
The American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced Tuesday that forward Yanick Turcotte has been re-assigned to South Carolina. The fourth-year attacker has appeared in two AHL games this season and seven with the Sound Tigers during his professional career. Turcotte, 24, has also played in 125 games with the ECHL’s Worcester Railers during three seasons from 2017-20, registering 24 points on four goals and 20 assists. During the 2019-20 year, he scored nine points for Worcester with a goal and eight helpers.

Jurusik Shines In Pro Debut

Rookie goaltender Matt Jurusik signed with South Carolina last week and made his first pro start last Friday in Wheeling, earning a shootout win by stopping 40 shots in regulation and going a perfect 2-for-2 in the skill session. Jurusik stayed busy in his first period of action by stopping 15 shots in the opening 20 minutes. After falling behind 2-0, he stood tall as the Rays came from behind to tie the contest and force overtime. The La Grange, Ill. native spent the first two months of his rookie season with the AHL’s Texas Stars.

Malatesta Posts 2 Assists Friday
Defender Zach Malatesta earned assists on both of South Carolina’s goals during last Friday night’s shootout win in Wheeling. The blueliner had the second assist on Dan DeSalvo’s power play strike as well as Dylan Steman’s third period equalizer. In addition, Malatesta set up captain Andrew Cherniwchan for a breakaway that led to a penalty shot opportunity in the final minute of regulation. The Wilmington, Mass. native leads SC in scoring from the back end this year with 18 points (4g, 14a) in 26 games.

Jurusik Makes 40 Saves In Pro Debut, Leads SC To Shootout Win
In his first professional start, which came over a year since his last game action, goaltender Matt Jurusik stopped 40 shots and then turned aside two shootout attempts to lead the Stingrays to a 3-2 win over the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena last Friday night. Jurusik saved all 15 shots he saw in the first period as well as a shorthanded breakaway stop in the second and six more in overtime during a Wheeling power play to earn his first career win in impressive fashion. Stingrays’goals came from Dan DeSalvo, who also tallied in the shootout, as well as Dylan Steman.

Stingrays Come Up Short To Indy In OT
Despite carrying a lead into the third period, the South Carolina Stingrays were unable to hold their advantage and fell in overtime by a 2-1 score to the Indy Fuel last Wednesday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Forward Mark Cooper had the only tally of the night for South Carolina, scoring off the rush at 16:08 of the second period off assists by linemate Max Novak and defender Blake Hillman. Goaltender Alex Dubeau kept his team in the game, turning aside 27 shots before surrendering the winner in overtime.
