Children: Nancy md Ida McDonald and Mrs. John Lee. Jeremiah H. Haile, s/o William Haile & Polly Coggins. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Church of Christ for Jeremiah Haile, 87, who died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ida McDonald, one mile north of Cookeville. Elder Clarence Cook and Elder Foy Wallace of Oklahoma, conducted the services. Afflicted for several years with stomach ailment, Mr. Haile announced after a hearty supper on September 10 that he did not intend to eat again as long as it did not hurt him any more to do without food than it did to eat. He made good this determination and forty•nine days from that date he was buried in a casket selected eight years ago, two days after the death of his wife. After he determined to refuse food Mr. Haile continued, it is reported, to drink water until about 10 days ago, but since then nothing has passed his lips. Dr. L. M. Freeman of Granville, making a non•professional call on Mr. Haile two weeks ago, warned him that he could not live without food, but he repeated his statement that he made at the supper table when he determined to stop eating food. Mr. Haile was buried in the City Cemetery. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ida McDonald and two grandchildren. I was born at home – 125 Glasgow Road, A Dennyloanhead – on 12 February 1946, a few months after the end of the Second World War which, I suppose, makes me a ‘war baby’. I’m sure mum and dad, Mary and John, didn’t have their troubles to seek during that awful conflict but they seemed to come through it relatively unscathed. We had our home comforts, even though they were few, although everything still seemed to be situated outside. If you needed the toilet, you had to nip outside to the almost ‘al fresco’ cludgie, while the women all went out to the wash house to launder the clothes – and after they had finished, the kids were chucked in for their twice-weekly bath.

< mill NASCAR OF NASCAR ■ TP'S FAST, ITS FURIOUS, IT'S SPINE- I tingling, jump-out-of-youn-seat action, a sport created by a fan for the fans, it’s all part of the American dream. Conceived in a hotel room in Daytona, Florida, in 1948, NASCAR is now America’s fastest-growing sport and is fast becoming one of America’s most-watched sports. As crowds flock to see state-of-the-art, 700-horsepower cars powering their way around high-banked ovals, outmaneuvering, outpacing and outthinking each other, NASCAR has passed the half-century mark. 50 Years of NASCAR captures all that has made Bill France’s dream into a firm, big-money reality. It traces the history and the development of the sport through the faces behind the scene who have made the sport such a success and the personalities behind the helmets—the stars that the crowds flock to see. There is also a comprehensive statistics section featuring the results of the Winston Cup series and the all-time leaders in NASCAR’S driving history plus a chronology capturing the highlights of the sport. Packed throughout with dramatic color illustrations, each page is an action-packed celebration of all that has made the sport what it is today.
