He had listened to his mentor’s recent recordings, referenced them while rehearsing his rhythm section with this elder, and even penned a few charts for meaningful measure. And then, just when alto saxophonist Greg Ward ascended the wooden steps to the stage at the , his mentor, frontline partner, and the club’s owner, tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson said, “I don’t wanna play any of that music.” “I’m like, ‘Oh, really? JAZZ IN CHICAGO JUNE 2019 6 FROM THE ARCHIVES THE HIGH AND MIGHTY HAWK by Dan Morgenstern

Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge, April 20, 1969. (1962), and those are just some milestones. You hear it today whenever Hawk essays a September Song, or Yesterdays. When he was in Europe from 1934 to 1939, turning the local musicians around, his disciples at home, through intramural rivalry and competition (those were. the days of the great carving sessions) began to believe they were ready to take him on. Few records filtered through from Europe (though he made many great ones), and reports that Hawk was getting rusty fell on eager ears. They still talk about the night in Harlem in 1939 when Hawk returned and all the cats were there waiting--rivals, boosters, and adherents of the new tenor style of Lester In the jazz pantheon dwell living Young.
