And then, just when alto saxophonist Greg Ward ascended the wooden steps to the stage at the Velvet Lounge, his mentor, frontline partner, and the club’s owner, tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson said, “I don’t wanna play any of that music.” “I’m like, ‘Oh, really?
