JAZZ IN CHICAGO JUNE 2019 3 FRED ANDERSON Park keeps “VelVET VISIons” alIVE by Corey Hall HE HAD LISTENED TO HIS MENTor’s recent RECORDINGS, referenced them while rehearsing his rhythm section with this elder, and even penned a few charts for meaningful measure. And then, just when alto saxophonist Greg Ward ascended the wooden steps to the stage at the Velvet Lounge, his mentor, frontline partner, and the club’s owner, tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson said, “I don’t wanna play any of that music.” “I’m like, ‘Oh, really?
