WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDY IN SCHOOLS BY CLARA E. CRAIG DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION STATE OF RHODE ~LAND PREFArl'OllY NOTE. In providing for the issue of a series of historical studies relating to Rhode Island, adapted to use in school, the Department of Education is fortunate in being able to present, a~ an initial number, Mr. Eaton's study of "Roger Williams, the Founder of Providence." It was first delivered as an address before the Rhode Island Historical Society on the second of October, 1906, upon the unveiling of the ·tablets placed by the State to mark the site of the spring where the settlers first landecl. and the site of the Roger Williams Home Lot. As the founder 6f Providence, as a leading actor in the beginnings of Rhode Island, and as one of the few famous Americans of Colonial times whose names will endure, Roger Williams is certainly a great historical personage, of whose life and times every pupil in our schools should have knowledge.
