Herein are printed the contents of the 4th, 5th, and 6th Book of the Howden Registers. The 4th Book contains 42 paper leaves, 16J inches by 6 inches, in a brown paper covering. Some of the leaves are much frayed. It records Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages to 1746. Book No. 5 measures 15f inches by 8| inches, is bound in cloth, and contains 102 parchment leaves, of which 39 are blank. The Binding is torn in several places. The Book contains the Baptisms and Burials at Howden from 1746 to 1775, and the Baptisms and Burials at Barmby on the Marsh and Laxton from 1763 to 1778; also the Marriages at Howden from 1746 to June, 1754. Book No. 6 contains printed forms for Banns and Marriages, and 48 leaves, \6h inches by lOf inches, were utihzed. The binding was in a parchment cover, which is now quite loose, so that some of the Registers may have been lost. They embrace the period from 1754 to June, 1770. The thanks of the Society were due to the Reverend G. M. L. Rees, the late Vicar of Howden, for permission to copy these Registers.

So many parishes in S.E. Derbyshire have been dealt with in this Series that it was hoped and intended that the present volume would be devoted entirely to the High Peak district and would contain a compact group of adjacent parishes, an arrangement which always brings out in a peculiar degree the value of this method of printing the complete Marriage Registers of a whole district. Unfortunately it was not found possible to obtain sufficient MS. from the High Peak without delaying indefinitely the issue of the volume, already overdue. The latter third of the book, therefore, has been filled with the important Register of Repton, the MS. of which had been ready for some time. The Repton abstracts were made by Mr. Simpson and Mr. E. B. Smith ; those of Chapel-en-le-Frith, which contain so many entries of old-established Peak families as to be of exceptional interest to genealogists, were done by of Fairfield Mr. W. Braylesford Bunting ,; and those and Buxton are kindly supplied by Mr. John Brandreth and Mr.

Robert Noel’s finding in the College of Arms Archives and Evelyn Lyon’s article about an evacuee demonstrate coincidence and sometimes hitherto unknown connections with Campden, while John Sermon’s research into the Old King’s Arms gives us much new information about the building. Mary Fielding’s analysis of a 1614 letter to Baptist Hicks leads to us question what he really was like and just who was telling the truth. The Archive Room query team too has been busy helping enquirers with Campden connections or interest. Each Signpost is entered onto our website a few months after publication. This is useful when you want to see a photograph in colour or larger, for instance, the Woodroffe windows. My sincere thanks once again go to all correspondents, researchers and contributors – please, keep your articles coming - they are valuable and valued. As a consequence, the borough had no single point of remembrance for those who died during the Great War. Indeed, a list of those souls local to the area who surrendered their lives in defence of our country was not in existence.

Book Reviews JOB J.B. Eaton Old Testament Study Guides JSOT, Sheffield 1985 xii + 68 pp. £2.95 ISBN 0 905774 97 3 DANIEL P.R. Davies Old Testament Study Guides JSOT, Sheffield 1985 133 pp. £2.95 ISBN 1 850 750 02 5 These are two welcome additions to the JSOT series of basic introductions to the books of the Old Testament. Eaton's contribution on Job falls into three parts ( = chapters): the first is a 'Guided Reading', an account (30 pp.) ofthe story as it unfolds, less than a commentary, but useful to the new reader as a means of keeping his bearings; the second (21 pp.) is subtitled 'Structure and Theme', and looks at questions of origins, coherence of the parts and the whole, audience and theme (again of the parts and the whole). The final sec tion usefully brings together in one place stories from Babylon, Egypt, Greece and India which have greater or lesser affinities with Job, giving a brief account of each, with some assessment of their significance for a reading of Job. The middle section of the book is the most important for an interpretation of Job. The author admirably steers a course between unhelpfully heavy attention (for the beginner) to critical questions and (equally unhelpful) neglect of them. His aim is rather to show how the various parts of Job, though on the face of it in some tension with each other, combine to give the book its unique tantalizing and evocative force. Thus the speeches show little or no knowledge of the story of the Prologue-yet the contrast between the patient and the passionate Job is dramatically powerful (p.33).

Less than a year ago the euro was worth nearly $1.40 on international markets. Earlier this month it stood at less than $1.05, down by a quarter as the European Central Bank embarks on a massive stimulus program while the US Federal Reserve is widely expected to start raising interest rates. By the standards of first-world forex markets it ranks as a collapse. It has recorded a similar performance against China’s yuan currency, falling from almost 8.7 yuan in May to bottom at less than 6.6 yuan. The yuan trades in a tight range against the dollar. As its title indicates, it is simply a Supplement to the General Register published in 1902. The Committee ap- pointed by the Council began its work immediately on its appointment in the hope that the work would be finished and the book distributed among the State Societies by early summer ; a hope that has not been realized because of long delays on the part of a few State Secretaries in transmitting to the Committee desired information. Indeed, the first half of the last month of summer had passed before all of the reports had been received. A supplement is in many respects an uninteresting and unsatisfactory book to edit; but the Committee trusts that the volume it now places in the hands of the members of the Society will meet the object sought in the action of the Council, viz. : to furnish the names of those who have joined the Society since the Register was issued, together with accompanying genealogical data. An alphabetical list of all members of the Society, July 1, 1906, will, it is thought, give additional interest and value to the book.
