The expression ledabbēr baššelî occurs in the famous episode in 2 Samuel 3 when Joab cunningly traps Abner and kills him cold-bloodedly (v. 27). It is the single occurrence of this expression in the Hebrew Bible, and the word šelî itself is a hapax the meaning and etymology of which are not definitely certain, although it has generally been related to the Hebrew root šlh (see further below). 2. Basically two interpretations for this expression, based on the general understanding of the context and its basic theme, are to be found in the various commentaries, both old and new: 1) Most commentators understand the form baššelî in the sense “in peace, in quietude, privately”, meaning that Joab proposed that he and Abner move aside to some quiet place to discuss matters with no disturbance.1 Scholars usually adduce here the usage of the verb šlh, of which šelî is believed to be a derivative, in such verses as Ps 122:6-7; and cf. -

In the meantime David’s house became stronger, gaining men and great respect (1 Chronicles 12:23-40). People began to look to David as their leader and were willing to follow after him. David’s army won battles and earned a good reputation. David did nothing out of the ordinary; he simply trusted the LORD and his house grew stronger. Saul’s House As David grew stronger, Saul’s house grew weaker. With Saul and Jonathan deaths, the strength was taken away. It was only a matter of time before Saul’s dynasty was gone, but his house would not fall without a fight. Abner and Ishbosheth did their best to maintain the dynasty, but with Ishbosheth as king, the house lost men, power, influence, and reputation. -

Mayes Much of the Mosaic legislation contained in the Pentateuch seems foreign to the modern reader. The laws concerning the priesthood, the sacrificial system, and the religious holidays are neither practiced nor paralleled in the dispensation of the church. Though they do have didactic and illustrative value as types of the work of Christ, they are often rushed over or skipped altogether in personal Bible study. The Old Testament legislation concerning so-called moral law has received greater attention. Since it addresses many issues which are also social problems in the twentieth century, it is frequently lifted from its Old Testament context and applied to contemporary society. Provisions for dealing with cases of adultery, homosexuality, theft, and murder in Israel are a few of the regulations which commonly receive such treatment. Several minority political/religious groups even advocate a complete return to Old Testament-style political regulations and policies. It is within the context of this debate that the Old Testament legal provisions concerning the city of refuge should be studied. These cities were designated locations to which one who was guilty of accidental homicide1 could flee in order to receive legal protection and a fair trial. philological encounters � (�0�7) 368-387 brill.com/phen The Semitic Component in Yiddish and its Ideological Role in Yiddish Philology Tal Hever-Chybowski Paris Yiddish Center—Medem Library [email protected] Abstract The article discusses the ideological role played by the Semitic component in Yiddish in four major texts of Yiddish philology from the first half of the 20th century: Ysroel Haim Taviov’s “The Hebrew Elements of the Jargon” (1904); Ber Borochov’s “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology” (1913); Nokhem Shtif’s “The Social Differentiation of Yiddish: Hebrew Elements in the Language” (1929); and Max Weinreich’s “What Would Yiddish Have Been without Hebrew?” (1931). The article explores the ways in which these texts attribute various religious, national, psychological and class values to the Semitic com- ponent in Yiddish, while debating its ontological status and making prescriptive sug- gestions regarding its future. It argues that all four philologists set the Semitic component of Yiddish in service of their own ideological visions of Jewish linguistic, national and ethnic identity (Yiddishism, Hebraism, Soviet Socialism, etc.), thus blur- ring the boundaries between descriptive linguistics and ideologically engaged philology. The splendor of the Jewish culture of medieval Spain (“Sepharad,” in Hebrew) would be hard to exaggerate. In a symbiotic relationship with Muslim and then Christian rulers, Jews enjoyed from the eighth through the tenth centuries (in al- Ándalus) and from the eleventh through the four- teenth centuries (in Christian Spain) as much stabil- ity and legal protection as they had ever had. They prospered economically and demographically, and made up a larger proportion of the population than in any other European country. During some periods Jews considered Spain a historically Jewish country, and their new homeland. Jewish intellectual life and the Hebrew language were reborn in Spain. There was the greatest flower- ing of Hebrew poetry since Biblical times, and Hebrew was used for the first time for secular poetry. Pioneering work was done in Hebrew grammar, lexicography, and comparative Semitic linguistics; Spanish Jewry produced philosophers and scientists; Jews participated in government as nowhere else in Europe. Except for the Ashkenazi Jews of central Europe, Spain was quickly recognized by all but the most isolated Jews as their intellectual and religious leader. Although the history is complicated, and during the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries most of the Jewish population lived in Christian rather than Islamic territory, the fate of the Jews in the Iberian peninsula was linked with that of Islam. -

From Sephardi to Mizrahi and Back Again: Changing Meanings of “Sephardi” in Its Social Environments Harvey E. Goldberg ABSTR A CT This article sketches historical shifts in the meanings and associations of the term “Sephardi.” Post-Iberian migrations and the post-emancipation perception of Euro- pean Jews potentially made “Sephardi” the main marker of the “Eastern half” within binary ethnic discourse reflecting the “ingathering” of Jews in Palestine and the State of Israel. This did not evolve, paralleling a historically based reluctance of old-time Sephardim to be identified with “Easterners.” Instead, broad ethnic divides were coded utilizing the lexeme mizrah. “Sephardi” retained some prominence and partially “re- verted” to its associations with religion. Relevant factors were a dual rabbinate and the emergent Israeli Shas party combining politics, religion, and “Sephardism.” There is also evidence that the images and terms “Sephardi” and “Mizrahi” gradually be- came coeval in valence to “Ashkenazi” within Israeli discourse regarding “religion.” Key words: Sephardi, ethnic categories, Israeli society, Eastern Jews t is a perennial dilemma in cultural and historical research how to sort out the strength of influences from the past in relation to the I impact of synchronic factors operating in any social situation.
