Carmen, Chœur Des Enfants « Avec La Garde Montante »

Carmen Production Photo by David Bachman
Pittsburgh Opera 2015 Carmen production photo by David Bachman Carmen: Shocking character, successful opera by Jill Leahy Libretto by Henri Meilhac Henriand Halévy by Ludovic Libretto French composer Georges Bizet was named Alexandre César Léopold Bizet armen ● at birth and grew up surrounded by music—his father was a singing teacher and his mother a fine pianist. A prodigy, Bizet was accepted into the Paris C Conservatoire at the age of nine; his teachers included Antoine-François Marmontel, Fromental Halévy (one of the founders of French grand opera, whose daughter Bizet married), and the composer Charles Gounod. In 1857, at the age of 19, Bizet wrote an operetta Georges Bizet (Le Docteur Miracle) for a competition organized by Jacques Offenbach. Bizet shared the first prize, Miracle was staged, and his name became known in Music by Music by the best musical circles. He attended Rossini’s famous Saturday evening soirées and won the Prix de Rome from the Académie de Musique. After three happy years in Italy, Bizet returned to Paris and unhappiness. He had few successes, his mother died, and his first opera of any significance in Paris, The Pearl Fishers (1863), was praised by Berlioz but disparaged by most others. Bizet’s only success was The Pretty Maid of Perth (1867), which earned praise at the time but is rarely performed today. (1838–1875) Georges Bizet In 1873, the Opéra-Comique in Paris commissioned Bizet to write an opera. He chose Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen (1845) and worked closely with librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Carmen faced many obstacles e to the Opera in reaching the stage—many considered the story too salacious for public performance, and critics denounced Carmen as immoral even before it was complete. -
Opera Kelowna Announces Scintillating 2018 Season Featuring Bizet’S Carmen
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 15, 2018 Opera Kelowna Announces Scintillating 2018 Season Featuring Bizet’s Carmen Classical music innovators heat up the summer with expanded main stage run and pop-up events throughout the Okanagan Kelowna, BC – Opera Kelowna presents its 2018 summer production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, running August 16 to 19, 2018 at the Kelowna Community Theatre. A heart-wrenching story of fiery passions and desperate acts, the luscious work overflows with some of opera’s best-known arias, such as Habanera and the Toreador Song. The production’s illustrious cast and creative team were announced at a special event at Kelowna’s new Porsche Dealership on February 14, and features the anticipated return of conductor Bernard McDonald and the Opera Kelowna debut of award-winning theatre & opera director Amiel Gladstone. In addition to the main stage production, the company will share special concerts and events throughout the Okanagan. “As a young company bringing opera to the Okanagan, we strive to select programming that introduces audiences to the most iconic experiences the art form has to offer with a contemporary twist,” says Alexandra Babbel, Artistic Director of Opera Kelowna. “Having delighted our opera-goers with the magic of Mozart and set them swooning at La bohème, we decided this year to set their blood racing with the unbridled heat and dangerous passions of Bizet. We are thrilled to share our unique vision of this venerated work – and to welcome the stellar line-up of inspiring artists who will bring this production to life.” Set in Spain, though written and sung in French, Carmen follows the story of a flirtatious and hot-tempered Gypsy seductress, who steals the hearts of an army officer, Don José, and bullfighter, Escamillo. -
OPERA Magazine Don Procopio
Don Procopio Perth Australia’s arts scene is in crisis after a devastating government funding cut in May left 62 companies without funding. In this climate it is a miracle that the nation’s most innovative opera company LOST & FOUND continues to flourish. The company performs rarely heard repertoire in unusual venues, employs outstanding West Australian freelance singers and engages a much wider audience demographic than traditional opera. LOST & FOUND’S hilarious, thought-provoking and theatrical production of Bizet’s Don Procopio on June 14th was a compelling argument for the vital role of small arts companies in Australia. Bizet’s early opera buffa (composed in 1859 and borrowing heavily from Don Pasquale) demonstrates an easily facility with patter, brillante ensemble numbers to rival Mozart and a knack for musical characterisation. The libretto follows the antics of Bettina as she rails against an arranged marriage to the wealthy elderly Don Procopio. Bizet didn’t (as far as we know) provide recitatives which leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Director Thomas de Mallet Burgess rented the suburban Italian VASTO CLUB and enlisted a group of nonne from the nearby retirement village to lend an organic feel to the chorus. Conductor Chris van Tuinen arranged the score for an eight-piece ensemble with accordion adding cabaret flavour. Sally Phipps’ wedding set and costumes were awash in pink from balloons to wigs and even pink waistcoats for the orchestra. In Scene One the wedding had already begun (with audience members participating in the banquet) and Bettina’s uncle and aunt were part-dressed and mid-argument. -
1873–1875: Carmen • 211
l CHAPTER NINE ; 1873 1875 – : Carmen hile Bizet was writing wind pieces and orchestrating all 1200 pages Wof Carmen, Geneviève was with him in Bougival during the summer of 1874; at least that seems to have been the arrangement they came to, however pre- carious. There is strong evidence to suggest that Geneviève was more than usually friendly with one of her husband’s friends, Élie-Miriam Delaborde, a virtuoso pia- nist whose talent he inherited from his father, the equally remarkable Alkan, and who spent the summer nearby in Bougival. Bizet was aware of her warm feelings for Delaborde, which she did not hide.1 The manner in which members of the Halévy family destroyed or concealed crucial evidence suggests that something was amiss. The appearance, however, is of a threesome who got on well enough. Delaborde, like Bizet, enjoyed swimming. He was a vigorous athlete, an advocate of the pedal-piano, an experienced traveller, and the possessor of innumerable apes and parrots as pets—congenial and interesting company, in other words. The most significant pointer to Geneviève’s interest in Delaborde is the marriage contract they both signed in August 1876, scarcely a year after Bizet’s death.2 The marriage did not take place; both parties eventually married other spouses. But this is a mat- ter in which gossip passed down through the years seems for once to have been right. Geneviève nevertheless told Gounod later that there was not a moment of her six years with Bizet she would not want to live again.3 We have at the same time to contend with the parallel gossip that linked Bizet to Galli-Marié. -
