View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by OpenKnowledge@NAU Recommended Movies and Television Programs Featuring Psychotherapy and People with Mental Disorders Timothy C. Thomason Abstract This paper provides a list of 200 feature films and five television programs that may be of special interest to counselors, psychologists and other mental health professionals. Many feature characters who portray psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, or psychotherapists. Many of them also feature characters who have, or may have, mental disorders. In addition to their entertainment value, these videos can be seen as fictional case studies, and counselors can practice diagnosing the disorders of the characters and consider whether the treatments provided are appropriate. It can be both educational and entertaining for counselors, psychologists, and others to view films that portray psychotherapists and people with mental disorders. It should be noted that movies rarely depict either therapists or people with mental disorders in an accurate manner (Ramchandani, 2012). Most movies are made for entertainment value rather than educational value. For example, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a wonderfully entertaining Academy Award-winning film, but it contains a highly inaccurate portrayal of electroconvulsive therapy. It can be difficult or impossible for a viewer to ascertain the disorder of characters in movies, since they are not usually realistic portrayals of people with mental disorders. Likewise, depictions of mental health professionals in the movies are usually very exaggerated or distorted, and often include behaviors that would be considered violations of professional ethical standards. Even so, psychology students and psychotherapists may find some of these movies interesting as examples of what not to do.

  • By Jennifer M. Fogel a Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

‘LIES BETWEEN FRIENDS’ CAST BIOS GABRIELLE ANWAR (Joss) – Born in Berkshire, England, the endearing and accomplished Gabrielle Anwar has more than 45 film and television performances to her credit in both Europe and the United States, including her breakout film, “Scent of a Woman,” where she was whisked off her feet into an acclaimed tango with Al Pacino. Anwar has enthralled in a vast array of diverse characters from the blind diving horse circus performer in Disney’s biopic “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” to the risqué royal in Showtime’s “The Tudors” to the supercilious counterpart to Noah Wyle in TNT’s “The Librarian II.” She also played the fatal object of desire in “Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead,” the regal Queen Anne in “The Three Musketeers,” the party girl in BBC’s adaptation of Mortimer’s “Summer’s Lease” and the coquette pursuing Dermott Mulroney and Hope Davis in the independent feature “Happy Together.” Currently, Anwar stars as Fiona in the USA Network original series “Burn Notice.” With three children, a canine, a feline, an art studio, a yoga fanatic, a garden and a slew of literature in the works, Anwar lacks any free time. # # # CRAIG SHEFFER (Sheriff Zach Watts) – After studying theatre at East Stroudsburg University, Craig Sheffer immediately relocated to New York to pursue a career in acting. Early auditions landed him a role in the off-Broadway play Punchy, and he soon found himself co- starring in the award-winning Broadway production Torch Song Trilogy. In less than a year, producers spotted his work on Broadway and cast him in his feature-film debut opposite Emilio Estevez in “That Was Then, This Is Now.” Sheffer later landed starring roles in the John Hughes comedy “Some Kind of Wonderful” and the father/son drama “Split Decisions,” with Gene Hackman.

SEPTEMBER 2009 AND THE EMMY GOES TO... A brief history of television’s most prestigious award By Judi Miller In 1946 the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) was founded by Syd Cassyd. Cassyd, a reporter for Boxoffice magazine and a grip on the Paramount lot, recognized television’s potential and organized a meeting to discuss forming an academy for television, similar to what the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was for the film industry. Only seven people showed up, but by the fifth meeting there were 250 members. Entertainer Edgar Bergan was the first elected president and took office in January of 1947. By 1948 preparations for the Academy’s first award show were underway. The award statuette, a winged woman holding an atom, was designed by television engineer Louis Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS McManus (he used his wife Dorothy as the Ed Asner in his Emmy-nominated appearance with Gary Sinise on CSI-NY model). The wings represent the muse of art, the atom the electron of science. Then came naming the award.
