WHAT Architect WHERE Notes Built in 1991 as an airport. Service distribution systems are contained Bassingbourn Rd, within the 'trunks' of the structural 'trees' that rise from the *** Stansted Airport Norman Foster Stansted, Essex CM24 undercroft through the concourse floor. These trees support a roof 1QW canopy that is freed simply to keep out the rain and let in light. Zone 1: City of London Built in 1894 as a bridge which was originally the only crossing for the Thames. It took 8 years, 5 major contractors and the relentless labor ***** Tower Bridge Horace Jones Tower Bridge of 432 construction workers to build Tower Bridge. Tours are available Mon-Sun (10-18). General admission £8.00, £5.60 students. Built in 1078 as a Medieval castle. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures that had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, were held within its walls. In the ** Tower of London - London EC3N 4AB First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison, and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. Tours include includes access to the Tower and the Crown Jewels display and other exhibitions. Tue-Sat (9.30-16.30) Sun-Mon (10-16.30). General admission £21.45, £18.15 students. Built in 2002 as a low-rise, energy-conscious office building for the Willis Faber & Dumas Headquarters. -

The Growth of London as a Port from Roman to Medieval Times Transcript Date: Monday, 17 October 2016 - 1:00PM Location: Museum of London 17 October 2016 The Growth of London as a Port from Roman to Medieval Times Gustav Milne Summary When the 58,000 tonne Caledon carried its cargo of South African fruit and wine into the Thames estuary on 6th November 2013, a new chapter in the port of London’s long history began. It was the first ship to berth at London Gateway, the massive container port built for DP World at Thurrock, in Essex. This is some 30 miles east of the ancient City where the first (rather more modest) port had been established some 2,000 years earlier. Londinium’s Roman harbour had waxed and waned between AD50 and AD500, before a new Mid Saxon beach market subsequently developed to the west at Lundenwic, just off the Strand near Aldwych in c. AD 600. By AD 900, the entire Saxon settlement, complete with beach market, had relocated back to the site of the abandoned Roman city on the orders of King Alfred the Great. The open harbour was initially centred in the western half of the City, but once the first medieval timber bridge was built in c AD1000, the beach market was extended eastwards to the Billingsgate area. A period of expansion then saw the beach market transformed into a medieval merchant port by the 13th century, and by the end of the 14th century, the officials working in the new Custom House were kept busy cataloguing diverse cargoes brought to the City from all over Europe. -

City of London walk 2 Updated: 23 June 2019 Length: About 3¼ miles Duration: Around 4 hours HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WALK Cheapside, St Mary-le-Bow, Bow Lane, Watling Street, St Mary Aldermary, No 1 Poultry, St Stephen’s Walbrook, The Mansion House, The Royal Exchange, The Bank of England, Jamaica Wine House, Leadenhall Market, Lloyd’s of London, The ‘Scalpel’, The ‘Cheesegrater’, St Mary Axe, The ‘Gherkin’, The Baltic Exchange, Bishopsgate, The Heron Tower, Church of St Ethelburga the Virgin, Gibson Hall, Austin Friars, Dutch Church, Halls of the Worshipful Companies of Leathersellers, Carpenters and Drapers. GETTING HERE The walk starts in Cheapside, just a few hundred yards east of St Paul’s Cathedral. The nearest tube station is St Paul’s, which is on the Central line. There are numerous bus routes that serve the St Paul’s and Bank area. Arriving by tube, leave the station at Exit 1 – it’s marked Cheapside – walk straight ahead, then bear slightly to your left. You will then be in Cheapside. 1 First, some information about Cheapside. Cheapside had been the City’s main shopping street since the 12th century. ‘Cheap’ comes from the old English word ‘chepe’, meaning to barter, or a market where goods could be bartered for. Indeed, the names of several of the streets that lead off Cheapside come from the goods that were once sold here – Poultry, Bread Street, Milk Street, Honey Lane, Wood Street, Goldsmith Street, etc. Following the Great Fire of London in 1666, Cheapside was rebuilt, and the market traders were moved to more permanent premises. -

27 SEPTEMBER 2017 Discovering the Port of Roman London DR GUSTAV MILNE End of an Era In the early 20th-century, London’s enclosed dock system extended from the St Katherine’s in the shadow of the Tower some 10km eastwards, including the Surrey Docks on the south bank, across Millwall and beyond to the Royal Docks at Beckton. This was one of the largest such complexes in the world and was perceived as the lifeblood of London: it seemed that our capital, set on the tidal Thames, had always been a port. In spite of severe damage during the Blitz, the port witnessed a revival in the 1950s and 1960s and was all set to continue as the driving force physically underpinning our international trade. But then the unthinkable happened- starting in the late 1960s, the smaller docks on the north bank and all the Surrey Docks closed, but worst was to follow when the great Royal Docks -the Victoria, Albert and George- were also closed. The last vessel loaded there left London on 7th December 1981. The complex had initially developed in an age of wooden, wind-powered sailing ships, had adapted to larger iron-clad steam-powered shipping and survived a brutal Blitz. But In less than fifteen years that entire system, built up from 1800, was suddenly abandoned- London was a port no more. The economic and social impact was enormous, but we now know that this was not the first time the port had failed: a similar fate befell the much older Roman port, some 1,500 years before, with similar consequences but for rather different reasons. -
