Professor Blake with speakers coming from as far as Melbourne, has been at the University for almost ten years and during Newcastle and Canberra. John joins us from Canberra College of Advanced Education, where he lectured in professional writing. As a writer, John is best known for his longer narrative poems contained in the award-winning St Clair. The days of being blinded by the sunlight flashing off Manu Vatuvei’s gold teeth are Iover. The big fellah is off to Salford in the English Super League, having been granted an early release from the contract he had with us to the end of the 2018 season. It is a strangely empty felling, given I have been cheering for the bloke for a decade. “Manu is a club legend,” managing director Jim Doyle said. “We didn’t make this decision lightly but after years of service we didn’t want to stand in his way.” I can’t say anything this week that I did not say last week, so farewell Warrior No 115, and thanks for the 226 appearances, some of them great, some not, but you will always be “The Beast” to me, even if, having come to know you a little bit, it is the most ill-suited name they could possibly have given you. I will miss your presence, I will miss your smile, I will miss your laughter. I will miss your carries, I will miss your all or noth- ing approach, and I will miss your tries. It is going to be a long time before anyone overhauls that all-time try-scorer record of 152.

In he goes and comes out with what is clearly the chid of the African fellah. “What are you doing?” says the African fellah. “Well I couldn’t risk going home with a Storm fan,” says the Warriors man. Boom, boom, which is why it shits me no end that Brad Fittler has come out and said the Storm have to be favourites to win the NRL – back to back – after their showing against us. But it is also why I’m not losing too much sleep over what happened on Anzac Day. Bring on the Tigers and let’s get on with it. Fittler says that 50-10 win was a warning shot fired across the bows of all the other clubs. Brisbane went back to back in 1992-93and it has not happened since. Only a fool, damn it, would ever write Melbourne off, so there slow start meant absolutely nothing.

The number of girls playing has shown a marked increase. The Carnegie Champion Schools tournament once again exceeded the expectation of everyone, indicating what a superb tournament it is. The finals - held at the new venue of Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre - were wonderful and we were lucky enough to have good weather. The event went like clockwork, due to the great number of volunteers who knew their tasks and went about them with confidence. I would like to thank all the volunteers, the RAF staff, especially Damian Clayton, the RFL staff, Carnegie staff, my elcome to the 2009/10 English Schools colleagues in ESRL and Barrie McDermott, WRugby League handbook. Hailing from Newcastle where he was a schoolboy prodigy, Churchill joined South Sydney Rabbitohs as a 20yo in 1947 and played there until 1958, winning five premierships. He returned to the club as coach and between 1967 & 1975 took his team to a further four premierships. Clive Churchill was also a key member of the New South Wales 'Blues' and retired as the most-capped Australian international player. A deep thinker about the game, Churchill - dubbed 'The Little Master - played with remarkable flair and essentially re-invented the position of fullback and, in 2008, was named the game's Fullback of the Century. In a lifetime of following and writing about the game I would have encountered only a handful of officials as colourful as Gerald. He was not only a totally honest and sincere man but also a journalist’s dream. The first NZRL chairman I met was Ron McGregor, who told me on the eve of the 1971 Kiwis tour to Brit- ain and France that all rugby league folk were bonded by having made a choice to become involved. Rugby league was not thrust upon us, as the union code was in high schools, and often sacrifices needed to be made to play our game. Since Ron there have been all manner of men chairing the national administration. They have certainly not been the bland, faceless stereotypes who have ruled some of this country’s biggest sports. Frankly, I knew little about Gerald Ryan when he was elected to the post in 1997 but I soon discovered his four-year term was never going to be boring. Continued on next page... W The feedback we received on the new format was fantastic and we hope you enjoy catching up on the work of Rugby League Cares and its supporters that is detailed in this magazine. It continues to be an extremely busy time for the RL Cares team and since our last newsletter in January the charity has moved forward in a variety of ways. In April, we launched our new men’s mental health and wellbeing programme, O­ oad. The programme is funded by the Big Lottery and is a unique collaboration between Rugby League Cares, State of Mind and the Warrington Wolves, Widnes Vikings and Salford Red Devils club foundations. We are delighted with the progress being made on the programme, which is being expertly managed by a new member of the RL Cares team, Emma Goldsmith. Emma’s background is in public health and there are some very exciting plans being developed to extend and enhance our fan-focused health services. Our player welfare programme has received a signifi cant boost with former Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain international WELCOME Keith Senior joining the team on a concepts and framework for what the new amazing to be able to share this story with part-time basis.
