Dunderave and the New Chiefs
DUNDERAVE AND THE NEW CHIEFS By Ken McNaughton The chief seat of the Macnachtan clan in the 17th century was Dunderave Castle on Loch Fyne. Angus Macnaghten [1] says that the Macnachtans were referred to as “of Dunderave” as early as 1513. The restored Dunderave Castle that stands on the shores of Loch Fyne today (Fig. 1) includes a lintel with the date 1598. Before restoration the castle was described as “one of the few well-preserved structures in the Western Highlands and a valuable example of the Scottish style of building in the sixteenth century.” Up to this time the Clan domains had been held directly from the Crown, but now the rise in power of the neighboring Campbells made it politic for the Macnachtans to recognize their primacy in Argyllshire. In a document dated 1548, Gilbert Maknachtane of Dondarawe pays homage to Colin Campbell of Ardkinglas (see below for more on Ardkinglas). Figure 1. There are four glens with their accompanying rivers that feed into the northern tip of Loch Fyne. Glen Aray is at 9 o’clock, with Inveraray (Fig. 2) at the mouth, this town being the ancestral seat of the Campbells of Argyll. “Inver” refers to the mouth of a river (Fig. 3). The boat in Fig. 3 is the “Vital Spark,” a “Clyde Puffer” that was named in 2005 in honor of the fictional one created by Neil Munro, a journalist and author born in Inveraray who wrote humorous stories about Para Handy, a captain of one of these steam boats that provided a vital supply link around the west coast and islands. -

Uisge Beatha - Part 5 Cruise of West Coast of Scotland, August 7th – August 16th 2009 At midday we gave up on the weather forecast. It had promised us a southerly force 5 or 6 decreasing 4 or 5. We were motor-sailing into a southerly force 7, trying to get around Pladda, to the south of Arran, from where we would have the wind on the beam as we crossed Kilbrannon Sound on the way to Campbeltown. With the islet of Pladda abeam we bore away and a large wave crashed into the cockpit soaking David on the helm. It was time to put in that third reef. In the next 3 hours the wind built to force 8 with prolonged gusts of force 9 accompanied by driving rain – David noted a gust of 46 knots. We were unprepared for this gale. We had a storm jib on board, but were not sure how to rig it. So, with rough or very rough seas on the beam, and all of us clipped on even in the cockpit, we unfurled a tiny bit of the genoa and made exhilarating progress towards shelter in Campbeltown Loch. Our 5 th summer cruise had started several days earlier from our normal departure point of Glenarm on the Antrim coast (see the Map). We, four ancient mariners with a penchant for malt whisky, sailing and Scotland were getting our summer fix in Moyle Maiden, a Dufour 35 foot yacht. Our plan this year was to take it easy. There was to be no long sail to the Outer Hebrides, just a relaxed pooter in the Inner Hebrides followed by the Crinan Canal, the Kyles of Bute and other destinations in the Firth of Clyde that took our fancy. -

What was the charrette? The charrette was an intensive planning session where members of the public, designers and others collaborated on a vision for development. It provided a forum for ideas and offers the unique advantage of giving immediate feedback to the designers. More importantly, it allows everyone who participated to be a mutual The Crinan Canal is a Scheduled Monument, an author of the plan. important tourism waterway and a significant corridor for leisure and tourism within Mid Argyll. The Canal Corridor has a crucial role to play in the wider maritime and tourism economy with local, regional and even national opportunities which need to be further understood and exploited for economic benefit in the Mid Argyll area. Scottish Canals, Argyll and Bute Council and local community councils and trusts in the Lochgilphead and Ardrishaig area agreed to undertake a charrette for the Crinan Canal Corridor. The charrette forms the first project to be jointly undertaken as part of a new partnership between Scottish Canals and Argyll and Bute Council. This project establishes a shared vision for the Crinan Canal Corridor with partners, stakeholders and local communities. (photos copyright Peter Sandground) What we did With over 200 public participants, the Crinan Canal Corridor was the best attended of any previous charrettes run by either Scottish Canals. Here are a selection of the activities you took part in. ‘Postcards from the future’. Participants were asked to imagine they were writing a postcard from the area from the ten year older selves. It was aimed particularly at younger people although many age groups actually ended up taking part. -

The Chanter Nottingham Scottish Association Newsletter June 2017 [Para Handy is the crafty Gaelic skipper of the Vital Spark, a Clyde puffer (steamboat) of the sort that delivered goods from Glasgow to Loch Fyne, the Hebrides, and the west coast highlands of Scotland in the early 20th century. The stories partly focus on his pride in his ship, "the smertest boat in the tred" which he considers to be of a class with the Clyde steamers, but mainly tell of the “high jinks” the crew get up to on their travels. Para name is an anglicisation of "Para Shandaidh", which means "Peter (Paraig) son of Sandy", and he is content to describe himself as "Chust wan of Brutain's hardy sons".] From the President I have come to the conclusion that we now have five seasons in the year, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and now the new one, The Election season. Last year we had two elections locally, one for the Police Commissioner and the now infamous Referendum. This year it is the local elections and a surprise General election and, if a certain young lady (I use that term loosely) north of the border gets her way, another independence election. The latter one reminds me of Southern Ireland that had a vote concerning the EU a few years ago when the country said No and then the government went back to the people two years later with the same question. A case of we'll keep asking until you give us answer we want.!! That's enough of Politics for, in case you hadn't noticed, its actually the start of the Summer season, thoughts of endless hot days (dream on), cream teas and listening to the sound of willow on ball as we relax watching a cricket match. -

A list of historic vessels afloat in British waters. These are owned by museums, local authorities, association trusts and similar organisations in the British Isles. They are accessible to visitors at least occasionally. The earliest vessels listed are TRINCOMALEE, built in 1817 and UNICORN 1824, both still 'afloat' in enclosed wet berths; the most recent include fishing trawlers built in the 1960s. List compiled in June 2020 and believed to be up to date except for current Covid19 pandemic restrictions. This list begins at the north of Scotland and proceeds clockwise around Scotland, England and Wales, then up the west coast to Scotland. This list does not cover the island of Ireland.
