This edition is the Nineteenth and covers the period from Shovuos 5747 (1987) till Shovuos 5748 (1988). This year 5748 is the Year of Hakhel, about which I have written and explained later on. 5748 in Hebrew is TE SA MACH which means "Rejoice and be Happy", and as the Rebbe has often remarked --"I love to see happy faces around me". I hope that you will enjoy reading this, my nineteenth edition and that you will derive much pleasure from it. All the photographs in this edition are by Isaac Freidin of Cholon, Israel. Unfortunately, on the 22nd Shevat (February 10th 1988) the Lubavitcher world suffered an irreplaceable loss. Our dear friend, The Rebbetzen (ZTzL) passed away, suddenly. This was a terrible blow to all of us, but moreso to our Beloved Rebbe Shlita, who had lost a perfect wife, an ideal companion and a worthy adviser, of almost sixty years standing. She was a real AISHESS CHAYIL (WOMAN OF WORTH). As this "diary" is written in chronological order, I have described some of our personal "Encounters with the Rebbetzen (ZTzL)" later on in this book. Until a few years ago, I had many encounters with the Rebbe, at Crown Heights and inside 770.

    EXTRADITION FROM A TO Z: ASSANGE, ZENTAI AND THE CHALLENGE OF INTERPRETING INTERNATIONAL OBLIGATIONS * HOLLY CULLEN AND BETHIA BURGESS AUTHORS’ NOTE: One of Professor Peter Johnston’s main areas of expertise was the law of extradition. Notably, he appeared before the High Court of Australia in the Zentai case, concerning the request for extradition of an alleged war criminal. His interest in the law of extradition was, furthermore, wide- ranging and scholarly. In 2013, he taught seminars on extradition in the UWA law unit Selected Topics of Public International Law. In correspondence with the first author of this article, he proposed co- writing an article comparing the approach of the Australian and United Kingdom courts to extradition through the lens of the Zentai case and that of Julian Assange. He wrote, ‘There are some fascinating similarities and differences, including the different ways in which the UK Supreme Court approaches interpretation of international instruments compared to that of the High Court.’ Unfortunately, other commitments intervened and the article was never written. The second author of this article was a student in the 2013 cohort for Selected Topics of Public International Law and wrote an essay on issues in the Zentai case under Professor Johnston’s guidance. We present this article as a realisation of Professor Johnston’s idea and a tribute to him.     57 Attitudes toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad By: CHAIM MILLER In the contemporary Chabad community, study of the primary texts of Kabbalah is not emphasized. Chabad Chasidic thought (Chasidus) is studied extensively, as are the sermons (sichos) of the Lubavitcher Reb- bes, texts that themselves are rich in citations from, and commentary on, Kabbalistic sources. However, for reasons I will explore in this essay, Kabbalah study from primary texts, such as the Zohar and works of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (Arizal), is relatively uncommon in Chabad. This has been noted by the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe himself: “Generally speaking, Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim.”1 Is this omission intentional, a matter of principle? Or is Kabbalah study deemed worthwhile by Chabad, but neglected merely due to the priority of other activities? 1 Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Toras Menachem, Hisvaduyos 5745 (Vaad Hanachos Lahak, 1985) volume 2, p. 1147. The Rebbe stressed that “Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim” since, of the various strands of Chasidic thought, Chabad Chasidus is particularly rich in its use of Kabbalistic sources (see below section “Lurianic Kabbalah in Early Chabad”). One might therefore expect that Chabad Chasidim in particular might be in- clined to Kabbalah study. Rabbi Chaim Miller was educated at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in London, England and studied Medical Science at Leeds University. At the age of twenty-one, he began to explore his Jewish roots in full-time Torah study. Less than a decade later, he published the best-selling Kol Menachem Chumash, Gutnick Edition, which made over a thousand discourses of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe easily accessible to the layman.

    SUSPECTED WAR CRIMINALS IN AUSTRALIA: LAW AND POLICY GIDEON B OAS* AND PASCALE CHIFFLET† The current conflicts in Syria and Iraq have for the first time in many years brought to public consciousness the issue of war criminals in Australia. Australia has historically dealt with this issue in a reactive fashion and with varying success, through the domestic prosecution of offenders, immigration screening procedures and extradition. These approaches have, however, generally been incongruent in theory and application. This article examines the issue of war criminals in Australia and demonstrates that Australia has an incomplete and largely dormant enforcement apparatus, a problematic immigra- tion regime and a poor record of extraditing war criminals. Australia is in need of a coordinated and coherent policy and legal responses that re-emphasise the role of domestic investigations and prosecutions, if it is to rise to the challenge of ‘putting an end to impunity’ and assert itself as a nation committed to international criminal justice.
