But can you guess the second oldest in this area? Pebble Beach? Cypress Point? No, that honor belongs to the CARMEL GOLF CLUB, a nine-hole links measuring 2112 yards, spread over the dunes of Carmel Point. Its club house stood on a rise at what is now 14th Ave. and San Antonio, and it is still there! It’s a small, shingled building, now used as a guest house by descendants of the founders, Philip and Laura Wilson. The course was opened a hole at a time in 1912, and the first official meeting was held Nov. 20 of that year at the Pine Inn. Memberships were $20 a year, green fees 50¢ a day. The land was owned by the Carmel Development Company, which assured the Club by written contract that it “would not be sold in lots or otherwise till after the year 1915.” Among the members was Dr. Clampett, which brings us up to date. The Club expired around 1920, and today nearly 300 houses stand on its abandoned fairways. Think what might have been!     The Project Front and Back Cover Artwork by Thomas Naccarato In the late 1990’s Nick Leefe and Bob Beck launched an effort to document the physical presence and movements of the great architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 18th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands considerably on the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Without this fact base, large gaps in time appear, and speculation is the all too-common and unfortunate result - the quality of scholarship is impoverished. The ramifications can be significant - original design features and perhaps entire courses disappear or suffer disfiguration, writings are misunderstood or misinterpreted, attributions are missed or made improperly. Golf course maintenance and development organizations have been particularly cognizant of their environmental responsibilities for a short period of time and are currently responsive to new design strategies. The specific focus of this project is to develop environmentally sound and cost effective guidelines to make insightful decisions on planning, design, maintenance, and water usage of a golf course to enhance local communities, ecologically and economically. Based on recent community evaluation, El Dorado Hills residents would appreciate the proposed golf course incorporated with the use of natural resources to provide important green space, with the added benefits of a clean environment and cost efficient fairway maintenance.
