Competitions History 1998-2000 | Ethanol Vehicle Challenge In this challenge, UWAFT converted a Chevrolet Silverado to an E85 – 85%ethanol and 15% gasoline truck. The team placed 2nd overall among 16 universities. The truck was classified ultra-low emissions tested on a three-day road trip starting in Milford, MI and ending in Washington, DC. 2004-2007 | Challenge X Standing true to its name the Alternative Fuels Team converted a Chevrolet Equinox to utilize a 65 kW Hydrogenic Fuel Cell. This was paired to COBASYS Nickel Metal Hydride 336 V Battery that powered two 67 kW Ballard AC Induction Motors. Out of 17 universities, University of Waterloo stood 4th overall. Utilizing prior knowledge UWAFT 2008-2011 | EcoCAR acquired GM Fuel Cell and integrated it into the Saturn Vue. Utilizing H2 as the primary fuel, UWAFT amassed a 9.6 kWh 250 V storage system. This powered an E- AWD architecture with a combined system output of 177 kW, with minor weight penalties. Out of 16 Universities, University of Waterloo stood 3rd overall. Changing market trends required the 2012-2014 | EcoCAR2 team to switch gears to full hybrid architecture development. This was UWAFT’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle. The standard 2.4 L was tuned to run an E-85 Flex Fuel configuration. An 18.9 kWh, 340 V battery pack was developed in-house using A123 batteries. A parallel-series architecture was achieved using 2 105 kW TM4 Motors. 2014-2017 | EcoCAR3 For the first time in AVTC history focus was shifted to developing a low emissions hybrid sports car. UWAFT converted the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro to a PHEV, with a Parallel-Series architecture that’s capable of full-EV driving with a combined system output of 322 HP! 2018-2022 | EcoCAR Mobility Challenge The latest installment of the AVTC series, the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge. The focus is on developing a hybrid SUV that meets the needs of a car-sharing application. The vehicle will also need to be SAE level 2 ready by the end of the competition. The team is currently in year 2 of the 4- year long competition and will begin to start integrating HV components to the vehicle in Fall 2019. https://avtcseries.org/ Current Platform -> 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS Target Market - Mobility As A Service (MAAS) Increasing vehicle utilization over life cycle for fleet owner Year 1 Achievements • Women in STEM • Spirit of PM Chosen Propulsion • Team to Watch Architecture • Sportsmanship • CSMS | 2nd • Target Market | 3rd • PIA | 1st Year 2 Achievements • Women In Stem • MathWorks Modelling Autonomous Architecture • 4 Bosch MRR1 Radars • Intel Mobileye 6 Series Camera • Integration with DriveTO • ROS2 Real-Time Stack • Lane Keep Assist Dev. • Adaptive Cruise Control Dev. • Automated Emergency Braking Dev.
